Just thought I'd pop this up on here...
I've always liked photography and considered myself to have a fairly good eye for a photo.
Back in Dec 2017 I bought myself a Nikon D3400 DSLR and started playing around with it. I recently added a Tamron 70-300 Tele Macro lens to my armoury.
I took about 600 photo's at my daughters recent wedding in the French Alps. I have to say that I was very pleased with the results.
While at the wedding I was talking to one of the guests that had a Canon Powershot SX60-HS. This camera has a huge 65X optical zoom on it. She had taken a few photos of the moon..Hand held only and not with a tripod. The results were amazing, so when I got home from the wedding I found a nearly new one and bought it.
I've only had one chance so far to try a moon shot, but again as it was just hand held I think you'll agree that it came out pretty well for a first attempt!
Any other budding photographers on here?
I've even created my own "Watermark" with Photoshop.
Here's a selection of a few of my shots....
bloody good pics. keep at it.
Thanks Grog :onya:
I always said Years ago that I'd never go to a digital camera and preferred film...I now wouldn't go back to film even if I had the chance.
Sometimes when I go out with the camera I can take 200-300 photo's. When I get home and view them on the laptop I usually discard 30-40 straight away as they are rubbish. Using film, it would cost a bloody fortune!!
That's a cracking picture of the moon considering its a hand held shot! What was the exposure time?

God knows...I had it set to "Auto" and just held it. Pressed the shutter button as soon as the auto focus got it crisp :imrgreen:
I've done a wee bit in photography, couple of wedding too. My stuff was all in days of film. Still have all the gear but don't use it anymore. I also dabbled in macro shots, as that perspective interested me. Great shots Froudy, a pleasure to see them here. Thx
That's some quality work there buddy
Really love the pic of the moon
Excellent work Froudy, keep it up 👍
Appreciate the comments..Thanks guys :onya:
I like the macro perspective too
@KiwiCol ..Not difficult either.
Night photography with starburst filter was another interest too. You do those? The 'atmosphere' or 'emotion' to the pic can completely change at night.
What looks ordinary & mundane in daytime can take on a completely different aura at night - especially if those looking at it don't recognise the subject.
Apart from the moon photo, I haven't done any other night time shots yet. I just bought a selection of filters including a 6 point starburst...So that'll be one to play with when I get time.
I used the 4 point mostly, I found the 6 a little 'overwhelming' myself. Have a crack & see what you think, all fun anyway. Cheers.
Actually I just double checked..Mine is a four point.
The Nikon actually has an option to edit photos and add starburst after taking the shot. Fully adjustable too ..Number and intensity of bursts, and number of points.
Amazing what you can do nowadays. That 65x optical zoom would never be able to be hand held in the old days.
It's a bit of a handful on max zoom without a tripod!!
I've got a tripod and IR remote, so next time we get clear skies and a decent moon I'll be giving it a go.
I have a tripod & an old manual shutter release, which you can hold open (of course) for time lapse shots of the stars moving across the sky etc.
Can you even still buy film?
I've seen a few of the time lapse night sky shots and they do look good..Another thing for me to try!
I guess you can still buy film, but I bet it's expensive...And getting it processed if you don't DIY.
Only did B/W, which in this case (Notty) means Black & White. :rofl2:
Just done a quick Google...
36 exp 100asa Kodak film £7.99
Develope and print 6x4 above roll £5.99...So not cheap!!
Oh, and to process b&w is even more expensive at £10.95 for a 36 exp roll.
Phew, why would ya? Digital has come a long way & it's instant. Now my interest is tweaked again, may look at getting a DSLR to play with as another interest when I retire - while off yet though.
Mind you, do I need another interest? I've got the GSX, the boat, the quads, cooking / catering & the caravan / camping, not to mention beer taster!! I'll have to live to 120 to get the most out of that lot now. Haven't got time to do pictures too? :whatever:
Now that I've tweaked your interest again..Give it a go :onya:
I also got into photography using film. Had all the gear. Canon was my choice which carried over to digital age. Have two nice Canon digital. Never use them, phone is too easy. Would be much easier today, using good stuff. Used to hate waiting for processing. New Samsung phone has a mighty camera. Pity im an Apple person.
Having a wee look at dslr's & lenses at the mo, don't seem too bad really. Wouldn't want to spend $5k on one or anything, can't see I'd get the use out of those. Under a grand & you can get quite a decent camera & some gear.

I can highly recommend the Nikon D3400 DSLR..Picked mine up new with lens for £360 :onya: 24Mega Pixel when shooting at highest resolution.
Talking of phone cameras, my Microsoft Lumia 950 has a superb 16Mp camera. Get some great results with it.
Another feature I like playing with is "Selective Colour" You have the option to select up to 3 colours and it will pick the selected colours out in the shot. Everything else will be in black and white...
The GSX I selected blue. The Bandit I selected red, and the flowers, Red, blue and green.
I've had to reduce the resolution to post on here as the files were about 11Mb each and the forum software doesn't like it.
That's a very cool feature. Like it. The D3400 with the 18-55 is about $690 here. Not stupid money at all. Huh! I've got a Lumia 830!

I'm just about to sell my DSLR - its a great camera (Sony A77) and I have some cracking lenses for it, but by the time you assemble it all and carry it around - especially when touring - it gets to be a big bulky package - in fact I have a proper Lowepro rucksack which doesn't take long to fill time you get camera, 400mm lens and a couple of others to take with you.
Before I went To Australia last year, I decided I wasn't going to take my DSLR with lenses, so bought a Sony Cyber shot RX10 III which has a 24-600 lens and 1" CMOS sensor as standard. Not so much lighter than my A77 but its just slightly smaller in size - and has the lens in-built as well. On full shots I'm giving away 4 megapixels (the RX10 has 20megapixels, my A77 has 24) but to be honest for normal snaps, its really quite difficult to spot the difference in quality. It's almost as good for fast moving objects as well but there the A77 with 400mm lens has the edge (I used to take a lot of motorsport but not so much now, so don't need that sort of detail).
At just over £1000 for the RX10, it wasn't cheap, but compared to what my DSLR with changeable lenses cost (upwards of £2,500 when new with the 400mm Sony lens), its a bit of a no-brainer. I've kept both for the last year, but find myself picking up for the RX10 more and more these days for its versatility, size and weight - so am selling my complete DSLR kit and keeping the RX10 as the RX10 does everything I want it to and everything I could do with my A77 (motorsport shots not quite so detailed excepted)

That last pic looking over the water, it's almost like being there in person.
Had a look at the link too Dave, very impressive piece of kit.
my daughter and best mate just got dslr. by pure chance, both same camera. small, compact, cheap. both really happy. zoom lens. Canon EOS1300d. $500 in NZ Col. how cheap is that. in 1980 i bought camera of the year, decided others know. AE1 Canon. served me for 25 yrs without a prob. that was 500 then. just after , mid 80s, mate was doing trip thru asia, india etc. asked me my camera reco. of course i said latest Canon. bad move. that was first eos model. turned out it was a dud, couldnt handle humidity. not one photo turned out. how was my advice, pretty crap. Canon did replace it, known fault.
Some great shots there Dave :onya:
Just out of interest, back in the 80's I was given a 1960's Asahi Pentax camera by a neighbour when he upgraded his kit. Everything on it was manual and I learned from scratch how to use it. I got some good results. Sadly the shutter jammed on it in the end and it wasn't worth repairing. It was good while it lasted though.
I think I'm a bit lazy with the Nikon and tend to use it on "Auto" a lot of the time. It gets good results but I really do need to play with settings and learn it all again.
My brother has been a professional photographer or videographer all his life. He has seen some amazing things and some tragic things.
It is his passion and has been since l can remember. He worked on Fleet St for a while. He took the only photo of the Rainbow Warrior bomber Domanic Priure, that was used on the front of Time magazine. He like you guys has an eye for the shot. Macro is a facination of his also . He has quite a bit on UTube.
I will try to attach footage of a helicopter crash he filmed. It has 10M views. He is wearing the white hard hat yellow hi viz carrying the camera then seen climbing into the cockpit.
Sorry wont let me put it up. Search... Murray Job on UTube. For you Macro boys checkout '2 grumpy caterpillars fighting over the same leaf'

Steve - do indeed play with the settings, you can get so much better results. Auto really is for when you don't have time to set up for a shot and just need to take it. Also adjust ISO settings (I leave mine usually on 200 ISO to give good overall shots, but 100 ISO for bringing out colours, 400-1600 ISO for fast moving and detail shots. That's where you have to be a bit careful as the higher the ISO, the grainier the picture.
Do have a play with "S" (Shutter Priority) and "P" (Program mode) settings in particular - the following link
http://www.olympusamerica.com/crm/oneoffpages/ask_oly/crm_e_ask_oly_01_09.asp
does a good explanation of what they do. Results can be so much better esp if using "P" mode and then slowing the shutter speed down when taking water (like waterfalls) to give a different aspect. On both these below I slowed the shutter speed down in the first to bring the rainbow out more, in the second to "soften" the water speed whilst keeping some of the detail
:onya: Great pics....
Excellent :onya:
I used to have a Minolta Dynax 7000 SLR (film) and used that for maybe 20 years, good camera. But digital has changed everything.
I don't have the time to dedicate to photography as a hobby in itself anymore, but I do enjoy taking the occasional decent picture. My priority is portability, needs to be something I can easily carry when out hunting (usually turns into armed bushwalking) so I got a Panasonic Lumix FZ200. Pretty good camera especially for the price. The only real thing I don't like on that camera is the lack of a true 'bulb' mode.
Graham Houghton (that's his youtube channel name) has excellent tutorials.
This is the best photography forum I have come across in Australia (and anywhere for that matter) -

Well that is just an awesome feature, with great results! Heaps easier than mucking about in photoshop or whatever afterwards.
@gsxbarmy where did you take the waterfall shots?
On the Congo wasn't it?
Waterfall shots were when my wife and I holidayed in Iceland a couple of years back. Awesome place to visit, o ly priblem is its so cold, we went in August when the top temperature is about 14C! I've also got pictures of the (small) icebergs and glaciers we saw whilst there
All the places you've been Dave, we'll have to call you Globalrider2!
Some great places and fantastic pictures I wish I took a camera with me when I go away but I would get the good shots as I think you need an eye for it.some of you guys take some amazing pics.
:worshippy:
Most pictures i took are of people trying to dance / eat after some alcoholic beverages were consumed .. not the moment that captures the full beauty of people :happy1:
oww and some mandatory burnout shots..but they are a bit blurry :confused1:

@gsxbarmy I quite like taking water shots...
Quite pleased with this snow one as well. During all the snow we had a few weeks back, this must have been the most photographed pair of garden chairs in the whole country
Keep it up! It is rewarding as a hobby in its own right but it is also important to record those moments you have experienced and places you have been.
I have been using Pentax DSLRs for the last few years and I always take it with me if I am having a day out on the bike. You may have seen some of the pictures I have taken in the trip reports I have posted up in previous years, many of the photos are also posted up on Flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/rynglieder/albums (https://www.flickr.com/photos/rynglieder/albums)
On touring trips I tend to take just the camera body and an 18-55 zoom for reasons of space and weight.
In truth at the moment it is mostly just used as a point and shoot in auto mode, hopefully one day I will have the time to get to know the equipment better and exploit it properly.
It's not just the number of megapixels or even the quality of the optics, hitting the moment or spotting something in a subject is what makes a photo special.
I particularly like this one I took of Glenfinnan viaduct. I expect a million people have taken a snap of the Jacobite steam train crossing it but I think the steam from the exhaust hanging over then glen against the colours of the autumn foliage after the train had passed makes for a much more interesting picture.
@Rynglieder That is a very striking photo. It captures the scene perfectly and in a different way to how most people would see it :onya:
It's a roman aqueduct that had just delivered a load of fresh hot water for the bath. :coffeescreen:
Another great shot. Have always enjoyed your trip reports and the photos you take.
To capture a moment in time is a record of your life. I look back now at photos taken nearly 40 years ago and recently with people in those photos share a laugh about a time in our lives that perhaps never recalled since the day the photo was taken.
I really enjoy the photos you blokes post on the site. Keep them coming. :onya:
Really great pics fellas, a talented lot indeed.
I have a Fujifilm SLR with a good spec & zoom, & a little Lumix, also with a very good spec, & actually, I prefer the little Lumix
as its all metal & hides easily in the pocket. Having said that, most of the newer cameras a very good nowadays.
I took this of our moggy some years ago..
She wasn't very happy about the flash!
A few more from when I was in Iceland
- one of the most impressive waterfalls I've seen (these were the same ones I posted the shot of the rainbow across earlier)
- some pictures of the icebergs (and this was in Autumn!). The glacier in the background my wife and I had walked on earlier in the day
- the moon at 2:00AM in the morning!
- sun-up starting around 6:00am
this is one i did on skye last year .... they have strange weather there some times !
Some great stuff from people here. barmy that steam train cloud one is awesome, I LOVE it.
The BEST falls in the world are the Foz do Iguacu
The volume of water is staggering - makes Niagara Falls look like a little stream (and they aren't).

Here's a few more crane photo's as you like them. I got quite a crick in my neck taking these :imrgreen:
Great pic's Froudy. Especially like this last one.
Opinion
That first pic, as they're all standing idle, some more foreground / dock showing empty berths alongside with a bit of sea would convey the waiting / downtime in a more 'complete' way. It's not a critizime, just an opinion.
Being art, pics are always subjective (see that?) & what appeals to one may not appeal to another. Main thing is if you like them yourself, if others do, great, if they don't, well that's ok too, you took the pic for yourself.
Nice to see you appreciate the industrial / grungy as well Froudy - a "photographer's" picture rather than the usual picture taken by a tourist.
1] Here's one of a rig in Cromarty Firth: I really liked all the colour in this industrial structure.
2] At the same location were two rusting hulks. There are I am sure prettier boats to take pictures of but you can't beat a bit of entropy.
3] Same day and a few miles along the coast a completely different subject - we spent an hour watching dolphins play in the turning tide. This is what makes me wish I was a better photographer, with practice there could be brilliant shots for the taking but this is the best I could do in the fading light and the fact the beggars pop up without any warning.
I realy like industrial style pics old machinery working or old and rusty .
Ya should come to where I work then . . . we've got the old rusty part.
this is one my misses took !
I do like aerial shots, must bung a couple up tonight after work.
Similar shot... different time of day.
Another one with water... took this in Vienna
Mistle thrush in the garden...
Three cracking shots
@Rynglieder :onya:
@shanered6 ...I've got a few taken out of plane windows.
This was using my phone camera flying into Geneva Airport back in March this year.
You can see the mountains rising through the cloud in the first shot.
@ARH Love that Vienna fountain shot :onya:
I can't take the credit for this one, Mrs F took it with my phone...
Lovely big Eagle owl...Considerably better looking than it's perch :rofl2:
Cracking bird Froudy! Here's some more 'wildlife'. It's actually a field in Cumbria... not the Serengeti 😎
Taken with a long exposure in very low light at dusk. I'm always wary about showing this cos it was a lucky pic. No photoshop.... I swear!

There are a number of free apps in the google play store and apple store that do quick photo resizing. Pick one with a good star rating and give it a go.
I said I'd put a couple of aerial shots up tonight.
These 3 are from January this year when I flew to Tauranga to collect the Blue bike. They're not good quality or anything, taken through the planes faded plastic windows on the cell phone camera, but the subject is the important bit for me. This is my playground, my weekend retreat, to play on the bikes up the rivers along the beach or through the forests. Plus fishing & boating when conditions allow. They're of Kaikoura & the surrounds.
It'd been raining for several days & the rivers are in flood. The muddy water can be seen mixing in the sea. There is also a large swell running, although it's not evident really.
The first is approaching from the south, both rivers are in view as is the peninsula.
This one is zoomed in, the 2 rivers are there &the camping ground where I holiday is just to the left of the lower right river, the 5th wheeler lives here as do the quads.
Last one shows the whole area, with the breaking swells out round the end of the peninsula, evident even from way up.

I have recently purchased a DJI Mavic Pro Drone. 4K camera the works.. Its basically the dogs bollox of Drones. Considering the weather has been an issue here i havnt had that much time to fly really, i have still managed to get some great footage and some awsome arial photography done.
I know this is the Photography thread but thought i would add this here too. Gasnrzq6rr4
Nice footage. That's a great bit of kit Proteous.
unreal Proteus, you photo people are very good. :hat:

It'd be good for quad biking!

One of the lads on the Bandit Forum is based in Denmark..He uses a drone quite a lot when doing his bike videos...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-n8USrV1m7w
good video, did they actually get over 60 ks. biggest lean angle was the bloke on the spring.
Nice vid that
@froudy thats one of the reasons i got the drone,,, for that sort of film.
Proteous,
Sorry to go off-topic, but.
I have 4 drones that I designed & built myself, 2 with GPS, HD go-pro camaras on gimbals, been thinking of getting a Mavic but was waiting for them to sort the bugs which I believe they now have. but I have a question:
What is the procedure if you get a phone call whilst flying? Does your phone take preference & you crash???
Not sure how the phone ties in with the drone, but could you put the phone into 'Flight' mode so it doesn't get calls or txts?
To fly the Mavic pro, your phone is fitted into the hand-controller & the video is sent to it, it becomes a video-screen & it can also be used to control the copter. You don't HAVE to use your phone however.
The phone is secondary to the controler and is not essential to flight. IF the phone does ring then there is a big pause button on the remote to stop the drone dead in its tracks if you need to. There is also a return to home button so the drone flies itself back to its take off point. It is a very advanced piece of kit.. Besides most people fly with tablets instead as they have bigger screens.
Thanks for that, I did wonder how that worked.
I'd love a Mavic Pro but just can't justify the $
Trip to Caerphilly Castle today with Mrs F :imrgreen:
Nice Froudy!
I'm trying again with the water pics....
Easter market in Vienna
Great photos guys :clapping:
Looking thru old pics, 30 yrs old. One of my all time fave bikes. Loved that thing. Just never stuffed up, sort of like an old 14, had gsx1100 at same time. 1100 was far better in all areas but gs was a great friend
I miss my GS1000 too Grog
It was a lovely old dinosaur to ride :imrgreen:
Dunno why, but i love this one..
My kind of photo too Proteous :onya:
I like it too.
I think this pic has a lot going on, there is also lots of different things that hold your attention & get your brain thinking. The water, the willows, the boathouse & under it, the flowers, the flaking paint, the small walkway in front.
Heaps of interest in this pic & the viewer can imagine themselves being there. :smitten:
Couple more of the moon...I really must set the tripod up when we get a good clear night and get them 100% in focus.
As hand held goes though, I don't think they're too bad :imrgreen:

Because while some houses have a garage, this one has a submarine pen. :)
I'm not sure, but I think the boat actually lowers down into the water from a hole inside the shed & comes out that tunnel part. No ramp req & all under cover.
Don't know if anyone is interested in "Big Man Toys"?
I had a day out on Saturday with my Son at Bovington Tank Museum. It was Tiger IX Day!
The Tiger only comes out to play a couple of times a year, so it was too good an opportunity to miss!
Not easy to get decent photo's as there were a lot of crowds there getting in the way. The action shots were taken with the Nikon D3400 and Tamron 70-300 lens ..Mostly on full zoom, so quite difficult to hold steady and get 100% "in focus" shots.
I used to do a fair bit of work for the guys down at Bovington, they promised me a go in a couple of tanks if I ever went down there on business but I jacked in my job before I got a chance, bummer.
Would love to have a Kettenkrad (pic 3)

He was lucky enough to ride/drive a Kettenkrad last year at a military re enactment weekend he went on. He loved it once he got used to it!
They do a lot of Willys Jeeps as well..
I seem to be struggling with moon shots now..Maybe I'm trying too hard
I tried setting up on a tripod a couple of nights ago and using a remote shutter release so that there was no camera movement resulting in out of focus shots. It didn't work! I seem to be able to get better results "hand held" for some reason.
This was the best shot from last night..Bare in mind I took about 100 shots, this was the only one that was half decent!

Try a full manual series of shots. I've not got a digital camera like yours Steve, but, have a crack at F16, 1/125 & ISO of 100 or less.
If I were doing something like that on my old manual camera, I'd be setting it up on a tripod, zoom in, manual focus & bracket exposures with different shutter speeds & appertures to see what works. Get myself a std set of parameters for taking such shots & work it from there.
That's an amazing add on lense to give so much detail, wonder if you can double it & see actual things up there? Like the Luna rover etc the yanks left behind. Must be able to see those things (if they're there) with a telescope.
@KiwiCol The moon shots are taken with my Canon Powershot SX60-HS. You can't change the lens on it..It's standard.
It's got a huge 65X Optical zoom and 260X if you go into full digital zoom mode!!
It's cloudy here tonight, so no moon..Shame as it's nearly full moon time as well..Never mind.
I'll have a play with your suggested settings and see how it goes :onya:
Don't forget to write down the exposure settings for each shot as you do the bracketing set, else you'll get something good & go now what was that setting?
I wonder how the image stabilisation actually works then? Maybe it has to detect motion / movement before it kicks in? It's odd you're getting a bit of blur when using a tripod & not when handheld.

It sometimes pays to turn off the image stabilisation when mounted on a tripod. It can cause it to throw a fit. ;)
Tripod, set to manual focus and turn off image stabilisation - they can do weird things at random - no idea why. Then you'll get a much better 'good photo' result than 1 / 100 :)
Pretty much what

This is one of my older shots, (2010 I think) handheld at 1/30 sec
Waxing Crescent
Handheld snap of the moon.
Camera: Canon EOS 30D

Exposure Time: 1/30 sec

And this one, another old one from 2007. Messing about in the garden with my Sigma 50-500 EX DG lens. I really should get back into photography, I miss it tbh.

They had the Typhoon display team out as well doing low passes over the runway on full afterburner - what a noise that made when we were in the hangers looking at the Spits and Hurricanes!
Great pictures Dave. Thanks for sharing :onya:
I'd love to see a flying Lanc.
There was a Spit used to do displays down under here for a while. Owner died but I think it's still here somewhere...
LOVE those Merlins.
I'm not averse to almost anything aviation though.
I also have a soft spot for de Havilland. There used to be a Vampire doing the rounds, but haven't seen it in the air for years. That whistling Goblin jet engine.... And the cartridge starters... :)
My mum and dad had a place in Auckland out by Ardmore Aerodrome which had a pretty strong Warbirds clan. Used to be a Vampire fly from there, yep a pretty impressive sound. A replica Mosquito was built there and flew for a while before going to its overseas owners.....now that was pretty special.
According to YouTube, there is a flying Mossie in NZ - hopefully still flying there
YkXiOqrXMmI
Next to the Spits and Lanc, my soft spot is for Mossie's lovely looking aircraft, hopefully there is one at Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre when I visit NZ next year.
Or is this the one that got sold overseas?

Do sound gorgeous don't they. ;) We had a display not far from where I live a few years back, managed to grab a couple of pics. You can probably spot the biggest mistake I made with my camera settings. They were snapped in a hurry is my only excuse. ;)
Good to know the Mosquito was a rebuild, for some reason I thought it was a replica. Pretty sure it was for an overseas owner.

You lucky person you, I'm envious, I'd love to be able to do that, in fact I'd love to go up in the two seater spit, but its mega£ and a waiting list of about 2.5 years last time I looked.

Thanks. I was swinging a Sigma 50-500 lens about when taking those shots, had the shutter speed a tad too high. Ideally a slower speed would have captured some spinning of the props instead off them looking static. Still quite pleased with them though.

There are two types of light painting - this style, and the style sometimes known as "light graffiti where the light source is in frame and is moved during the shot to get the effect (totally different to this style.)

how long was the exposure Mike?
I had the technical limitation of a camera which has a max 30sec exposure time, no bulb mode etc. For this, and another reason I'll discuss in a moment, I did it this way.
Using a tripod (naturally) set shutter speed to 30 sec @ f2.8 (which is the largest opening my Panasonic FZ200 does).
I then set the self timer to 10 seconds (so no tripod shake and to give me some time to get into position) and clicked the shutter button. The 10 seconds gave me time to get over to the ship (http://www.gayundah.info/wp/) and turn on the torch (taking great care not to shine it toward the camera.
I then shone the torch over a section of the ship, sweeping back and forth - just like painting - so as not to get any 'hot spots' in the picture. After the 30 seconds - rinse and repeat on another section until I had done all that I wanted to do.
(A good tip is to check the photos in camera before you leave to ensure you've not missed anything.
Later, I post processed these images together - stacking with layer masks so that the 'painted' section of each image showed through but the rest of the image was masked. (I used Photoshop Elements, but many programs can do similar).
Before actually stacking them it's best to adjust if there are any images significantly brighter or dimmer than the others, but I was very lucky as I'd obviously been careful to illuminate evenly with the torch. It's just a matter of choosing a 'patch' the same size each time and sweeping uniformly back and forth for the desired time.
The result is fairly pleasing.
A couple of things I'd change if I did it again - I'd take a (series of) long exposures of the sky to get some better star trails. Obviously I'd get the composition right. (On a sad side note the top of the bow has since collapsed :( )
Another tip is that the object (usually, there are no fixed rules in photography) needs to be placed in context which also helps with a sense of scale. In this case, the lights of the port in the background with the subsequent glow in the sky, provide that.
Any other questions, let me know.
Great explanation Mike.
Looking again at the shot, with what you've said, the star trails tell the story, there's 10 x 30 second frames there. You can count the wee dots that make up the trail, tells us how many shots you layered to end up with this one.
When I was looking at the length of the star trails, I was estimating how long an exposure you'd used to get them that length, but they're actually made up of dots. If you had a bulb setting, you wouldn't need to do all those shots & layer them, just move the light around.
Well done Mr Holmes :)
Another benefit of doing it this way is that my body never ended up in any part of the frame which made it to the final image.
Plus if it was done in a single image, the lights from the port, and the sky would blow out significantly. That could be avoided with a single frame for that purpose only with the other "all painted' frame over it.
I still think the layered techniqueis best for a large subject like this.
Something smaller like a tree or wooden gate etc could be done successfully in a single exposure - assuming longer than 30sec was available.
I haven't had much time for photography for the last 10 days or so what with Mrs F being in hospital.
Grabbed a few more Moon shots a couple of nights ago and then a few flowers last evening.
I like selective colouration. Offers all sorts of creative opportunities if used correctly / not overused.
I particularly like when old cars are coloured selectively, that an really work.

The Dalek used to be on the side of the New England Highway down near Bolivia / Sandy Flat sort of area. I didn't see it on my last trip down though.
Does a selfie count ? .....

Sunrise after the rain this morning.
As some on here may know I do a fair bit of photography now and then, primarily bike related stuff (UK stunt championship and Straightliners drag racing). Here's a few of the stunt ones :D
I have been starting to do a couple of landscape type of things too recently, and if I can manage it, possibly try my hand at some astro stuff after a bit of a session with a mate recently :)
went to feed the tortoises this morning and found them shagging again - he gets it more than i do
Poor quality as used my iPhone :)
Saw turtles, and remind I have one also... :)
Quality is not the best - It's crop out from phone photo.

And a gratuitous 1400 from last night as well... :imrgreen:

They're punching pins. I work in carton manufacture. These pin set ups go in a machine that cuts and creases the cartons prior to them going to the canning factories to have the product put in them...
Nice, thx for explaining them.

A moggy we once owned called Crumpet !! (My Brothers idea!)
Three castles I pass on my "standard" loop. The last one I always stop for a smoke and to watch traffic go by. Wait to take off until there hasn't been a car for awhile as I want no one in front of me. Makes for more fun on that nice road.
Nice Andre... I also pass by some castles on my favourite runs but never think to stop and take pics! Will do next time tho.

Got first naked cat with my wife (12 years ago). Thought not much about them, but now I really like it :)
Well seeing as were on the pets her's Charie the old westie and Meg my collie !
Meet Hector..
Sadly no longer with us..
A previous "Hobby" of mine was Horse riding..
My biker mates laugh when I say its the most dangerous activity I have done !!
But I stand by that statement and Yes that includes biking!
Awesome Speedy! :onya: Only 1 hp, but did you ever find out how much torque? :whistling: :happy1:
Hi Col
No idea of Torque Lol
I had 2 lessons a week for 6.5 years and got pretty good at Dressage / show jumping..
What makes horses potentially dangerous is that unlike a bike they have a mind of their own.
I tell my biker mates that even a 300hp bike will slow / stop if you pull the right lever..
With a horse it should listen to inputs..But if there is another Horse charging across the field nearby or a sudden blast of wind..Or the deadly crisp packet in the hedge, then they exercise their free will.
Its a unique sort of fear when one asks for slow / stop and the Horse decides its off on a charge.. And not just a charge but with potential Bucking etc..
Some are just nasty bastards..
My 2nd one was a delight.. I would liken him to a Giant Labrador Dog !
He was so highly schooled he was almost thought controlled with inputs from me.. Definitely NOT for a beginner !!
Here is our semi wild mousetrap Nyyti. He was born 17 and half years ago in the attic of our house from wild parents.
Parents and his sister or broher left and he stayed.
Veterinary asked me: who owns this cat? I answered to her: I don't know, I'm only his server.
17½ years! That's a very good innings for a cat.
As a young motorcyclist I had 2 goes on a horse, fell off both times.......... bastard thing. (its owner was most attractive tho.)
Too dangerous for me. Give me a bike any day.
Couple of my bike from local rides, Porlock and Watchet
Thought I'd share this on here from the weekend. Not a picture I've taken, but a picture of me trying to get a picture of one of the stunt bikes.
I guess you have to trust the rider for something like this and you could call it getting up close and personal haha :)
@CBG - so what DID the picture you took sitting there come out like?

I'll post up a copy o fit in here when I manage to get time to do the editing. From memory I managed to get most of the bike and rider in the shot as I was using a fairly wide angle lens (12-24mm, possibly right at the wide end) :)
Thats at about 400 feet if i recall.
Here's about the closest shot I got. It's crazy the difference in perspective with such a wide angle lens on :)
The info for the shot was: 1/125 sec, f/13, 14mm, ISO100 :)
Neat! I like that Paul :onya:
I spent the day at Brunty, this was my favourite pic I took.
Great photo, good use of Lightning !

A friend of mine who is very into his photography sometimes uses a crystal sphere to get some interesting effects. I decided to get one and give it a go.
I don't think I'll be carrying it with me very often though as it's 100mm in diameter and weighs nearly 1.4Kg. Mrs F has also refused to carry it for me :rofl2:

This one was taken at my youngest daughters wedding back in March this year. Two colours selected..

Yes. It's great fun on a dirt bike, IF and IF the dirt bike is your toy. I have had eight dirt bikes from Honda CR 125 to Husqvarna CR 500, and it is fun.
But when you have to ride all your daily rides, commuting, shopping etc. and 20 kms of highway every time in all weathers, it isn't fun every time..
My dad used to ride to work in the snow. Last bike l temember him doing that on was a Bultaco Trials bike. Chigwell to Gants Hill. About 50 birthdays ago.
Good fun he reckoned, no one else on the road.
A couple of weeks ago I visited the Birds of Prey Centre Wales. It's based near Carmarthen within the National Botanic Garden Wales.
We watched a display of various birds being flown to the lure outside. Obviously I had my camera with me and decided to tryand get some "Action" shots. I was rather pleased with the results as were the people running the place. I've given permission for them to use my photo's as long as they credit me with the image..They have done so with a couple already :imrgreen:
If you are in the area then this place is well worth a visit!

Its around the Elan valley in Wales - frightens the life out of you as they fly pass - you can actually see the pilots faces quite clearly as they fly so low :)

On the old Org was a member Tigger (Pete Jones) who lived very close to the Mach Loop site and was a very keen amateur photographer, some of the pics that he posted were very impressive to the point where he had close up's of the Pilots giving the thumbs up as clear as day

did you meet her in a bar? :)
He can't remember, he just woke up with it next to him in the morning . . . :whistling:
She didn't want any monkey business from Hooli :)
She's an Ape not a money. No tail you see, as if you needed proof it wasn't Thailand.

Baaahhhhumbug.
A few pics from my recent Vietnam trip to Saigon/Ho Chi Minh. 2 million people in Ho Chi Minh Square for New Years Eve. :onya: :onya: :onya:
They're coffee is VERY STRONG by the way. Hotted up scooters would have been fun but average speed is 35kmh.
Thx for sharing Chris. It's always nice to see other places.
Col it is a fabulous place, food is so fresh never frozen meat. 9 million in Saigon 70% of the population under 30 yo. About 18 million scooters too LOL.
wonder why so many under 30? Die at 35?
Massive amounts left the south when war was lost. Not sure about the population explosion 30 years ago.
Not had much chance to get out with the camera and new Sigma lens for a while now. I did however get a couple of decent photos last week. One was a robin singing it's heart out in the winter sunshine and the other was the moon when we finally got a clear sky and it was visible.
