Nope, these screws don't have Philips heads. Stripping wouldn't have happened with the correct type and size JIS tool. Don't ask how I know. :boogie2:
Sorry, common misuse of the term Andre, you are of course correct.  I used my JIS screwdriver, even the silvery impact one. The jis indent had previously been compromised, I've always been lucky with getting them undone, but not this time.

The other concern I have now is galvanic corrosion by having stainless screws in the alloy resevoir. I've added a dab of grease to the M4 threads before installing them, hopefully that will prevent it. I also went with internal hex drive in place of Phillips (this supplier did not have jis screws)
I try to take one day at a time, however sometimes several days catch up with me at once.

Andre

In this application, I wouldn't worry (much) about galvanic corrosion. For peace of mind, I would put a tiny bit of red rubber grease on the threads of the screws. Just be very gentle with the "torque" when fitting.

I swore a lot at my 14 today because the bloody thing broke down!

I popped out this morning to get a new front brake light switch about 8 miles away. Had brekkie in the cafe next door, then rode to J&S in town. I didn't need anything, just stopped for another cuppa as in no rush to get home. That's when she decided not to start as the battery had gone flat. Managed to bump her with a helpful push so I got home without too much hassle.

I started checking once back. Revving up she only got to about 13v which is obviously too low so I started looking for bits to check & thought I'd found it when the stator multiplug was nicely burnt. I tested the stator output after cutting the plug off & it matches the manual, right resistance, no shorts to earth & the correct voltage when the bike is revved up. So I put bullet connectors on to replace the multiplug & tried that. no difference in the charging unfortunately.

From there, I stripped the back end down thinking it might be the reg/rec had finally died. But no that tests out fine too. Wiring to & from the reg/rec tests fine too, so that's not burnt out with the plug. Ended up like this & put her away still in bits while I think about it.

So yeah, everything works when tested section by section, the connections between everything are fine but sod all charging current is coming out. My suspicion is the chinky stator I fitted in June isn't giving out the Amps it should, as none of the tests given in the manual test the Ampage & that's more important that just output voltage.

The current plan is to send the old stator I kept off for rewinding & try that when it comes back. This chinky one never gave more than 13.9v when revved even just after fitting so I suspect it's underspec & failed with the load, but not totally burnt out to show up on the tests yet.

Combine that with the Jag going in for welding today, the only thing I've got working & on the road is the HD. Guess I'll be a tractor boy if I get bored & need to go out then.

I have had stainless hex screws the same as yours in mine for the last 5 or so years, never a problem & much easier to get out I find

Is it possible something got partially fried when you had the frame welded recently?

[/quote]

That should be rather unlikely as the battery, reg/rec, ecu etc were all in my garage while the bike was welded next door. So nothing was wired up & it's a long way from the welded area to any wiring.

The symptoms remind me of when a phase has burnt out on the stator, as far as charging voltages go. Hence my suspicions on the cheap stator.

Andre

Well, you'll know if you are right when you get the old one rewound and put it back in. If you are not right, you'll have the chinky one as a spare.

Cheap AliExpress fairing, actually like the look of it.

Looks the same as the one three 14s I ride with have got.

What could actually go wrong in MOT with such low usage  :stir:

Remind me Notty. Was it on 18,994 or 18,995 miles when you got it all those years ago?

My rewound stator arrived back today!

That's much quicker than I expected as I only posted it Tuesday. I'll try & find time to fit it after work this evening & hopefully fix the charging issue on my 14. They've supplied a Honda connector for the loom as it's a higher ampage than the original, I'd asked for both halves as mine had melted last time.

If I get it done, I'll take her out for a test, then recheck voltages once back to prove the reg/rec isn't failing when hot as I've seen that on diode packs before. I once had a car that only charged for 10 mins till it warmed up, that was a fun issue to track down.

Westcountry Windings in Ipswich if anyone needs one done.
