A cousin of mine used to command a Gurkha detachment in the RAF, he's got nothing but praise for them either. Amazing fighters & all decent people.

I bought some warmth.

Probably overdoing it a bit, log burner is rarely let to go out. A bit of crude man maths says my house is like an oven 24/7 over winter for around $30 / £17 a week.  I'm happy with that.

You wouldnt like my place Tony..
In winter time my mates keep their jackets on when they visit (and I am NOT joking).
On several occasions during the winter months when the weather has warmed a few degrees, I open the doors and windows to "let the heat in"!
I have several mates are from Yorkshire and even they think I am tight!! (UK guys will know what I mean)..

Yorkshire folk have a reputation for being errrr "careful" with money..

I hate the cold. It was certainly part of leaving the UK and moving to the coast here.

My wife liked this area originally. I said I never want to live anywhere that has a frost !

She convinced me with an offer of early retirement, big sheds, and a warm house.  New place is very well insulated, in walls, in ceilings, under the room etc, and brick skinned not timber like most around here. Reverse cycle aircon and a log burner means we have had Winter nights here when we have opened windows to get some air in!

To be fair Winter here isn't like the UK. Even on the rare days we see a frost once the sun is up it's normally a really nice day, warm, dry and sunny.

I've worked outdoors in Aussie summers for 19 years and love it, cold... I hate !

This week (1/3rd of the way through Winter)

As I posted in the other thread, this is my Winter...

(I just wait untill the temps in double figures and avoid early starts!)

Im with you Tony, hate the cold. Weve had three 2 degree nights this month. A/C does a great job as heater, cheapest way of doing it.

Yeah, we have a really good reverse cycle system in the new place. Very clever thing. Can't fault it, except I love having a log burner. I find it very therapeutic and it's a little bit of old Skool low tech in my life. A big lump of Iron Bark in when I go to bed still gives me nice glowing embers the next morning.
