Well as another isolation activity, and since bike ride photos will be rare for a while, why not share a non bike / non car related photo.
Only catch is it has to be a photo you took, or a photo taken of you, not something pinched from the interwebs.
Tell us a bit about it while you're at it, if you like.

OK the first in our series of "Shitty Places in the World to Live" we nominate South East Queensland.
This is an awful horrible place known as Fraser Island.
Seriously don't go there you'd hate it.
I mean for gawd's sake look at the place...

I gave a bloke a fridge and a matching freezer for free - they were perfectly fine just surplus to requirements.
I figured he needed it and sounded like he couldn't really afford it so why not.
He was on a forum I'm on where I've had only good experiences.
I helped him load them into his Land Cruiser.
He promptly backed out straight over the top of my letterbox and fucked off.
Never to be seen or heard from again.
I later found out that while pleading poor he actually has a huge property!
He's probably a toilet paper hoarder nowadays.
Just remembered about this place:

Sure looks familiar Col. This next one taken from my office , my ute, lunch location last year. Looking north towards Dicky Beach. We sure do have nice beaches, good water temp and excellent surf. Pic was a flat day. Very unique as shipping channel comes in very close a bit further south. Some huge ships. Pic can see one way out.
Another snap, one of the reasons why we holiday in Kaikoura - taken on our boat.

18 metre load of beams on extension trailer my two loads today :salute:
Bloody Hell. Huge. Once went to a woodchip place, big long bin trucks similar to yours. No idea how long. They put whole thing, truck and trailer, in a machine that lifted it all up at front so chips just slid out. Was pretty amazing. Often wondered how that affected oil in motor etc.
@GSXKING You should have got them to stack the I beams up to make the trailer more rigid.
And put a sheet of half inch ply behind the cab in case they slide forward.
Tall ships races 2017, Kotka
God I LOVE tall ships.
Sitting in my study here I look a the walls and have 5 large and several small tall ship pictures...
Almost never see 'em in this part of the world anymore. Europe and then the USA is the place to be for that I guess.
I have seen those tall ships very close a few times.
2007 I was working on a tug boat, and we were towing them in and out to port of Kotka and port of Helsinki.
Some of them were a bit difficult to pull, because they were so fragile.
And that big Russian "Sedov" (117 m, in the last pick) had bigger engine and more bollard pull than our tug boat!

Agreed, theyre not supposed to snap. By the look of the rust on the end of the failed part, its been cracked for a long time, possivly even since it was made. I also noticed its failed close to where the coils are tighter to fit into the strut, seems like a manufacturing defect to me, coiled too tight when the steel was already too cold.
Many years ago I thought I'd have a go at stock car racing so I bought this gem and it's trailer for $40. It's first outing was a test run up the back lane where I broke a back axle. Do I fix it or sell it as is for $60? I took the $20 profit.

Anything would have been 1 better than that thing Col. It had a very rattly Rugby side valve 4 that I finally killed. It threw a rod through the block taking out 4 valves but also a plug lead that kept coming off one of the two cylinders that were working. It went like that for about 5 mile & got us back to the mooring. Next day the motor became a mooring.

No idea why but all newish cars seem to have springs as service items, which is odd as they never used too.

My first ever lot of homebrew got bottled tonight. It claims to be an IPA, but tastes pretty much like Sharp's Doombar. I'll take that as I like Doombar.
It should have been difficult to get wrong as it's a brewery in a bag so you just add water, but the instructions where missing so I added 2 pints too much. Seem to have got away with it though, I'll have to order another one or two. It makes 25 pints, so I got 27 pints. You can see 25 here & the other 2 will get drunk this evening.

Back to the home brew. My setup.
Great set up Irish, looks good. Landsborough Lager, many diff styles, best you cant buy. Brewed by me for 1/4 century.
@grog Been home brewing myself almost 40 years started back here in Ireland. At one stage in Oz I would have had about 700 long neck bottles in a garden shed on racks maturing away all types dated and labelled myself and a neighbour did it. About 15 years ago converted a fridge with Toohey's taps CO2 bottle Coke pressure barrels and regulator, About 6 years ago got the KEG KING double regulator. So can have two types on tap, pissed hundreds of bottles off now bottle about 3 long necks per batch as I still like to leave them for a couple of months, btw for those non Aussies (like Chris) long neck is 750ml bottle.

It was a California car so body is solid - most rust is on the bonnet. It sailed through the inspection 18 months ago for registry here. I may not get around to redo this one as have another C GT on the go with is also a California solid car and then there is my C GT body that eventually end up as a GTS - that one needs lots of body work. Never a dull moment!

A few years ago I bought some filing cabinets at auction but recently the bottom drawer on one of them stopped coming out all the way. There had to be a reason so I took the drawer out only to find some paper work and 235 little surprises in an envelope. I'll have to check the others now.
Petty Cash
Good outcome Snapey. Was a similar story here couple of years ago. Suitcase from op shop had 12g in it. Best ive done is used cars with a few bucks under back seat.
Score Snapey!
On in fact 5 score and fifteen.
What I didn't look at with these old notes was the 11 x $20's were running numbers. Too late now but they might have been worth a lot more than $235.

Today i finally finished a 2 1/2 year work project. Removed pool to just a grass area. Lots of sweat, cut fingers, sore back.Even 5 days in hospital, nearly cut off big toe and next one, that was a 3 month sit at home. Carted away all the timber, steel etc myself, no machines used except saws, drills etc.Was quoted over 20g by tradesman, all up i think around 5g. Carted/barrowed 11 tons of soil. Mrs thought it would never get finished, me neither sometimes. Now just grass to fix. Never again starting a big project, will pay next time. Sure makes bike maintenance look easy.
Well done mate, I remember putting an above ground pool in with my dad at their old place, he got the pool from a work mate for niks, it was harder to pull it out of the original house than put it back together at my dads house. We enjoyed that pool for 20 odd years.
Big job that Grog, better get yerself a beer!

Watching an Echidna walk past the house build. I went over to take his pic and he curled up and froze as they do. So I backed off a way and waited for him to go on his way. True to form off he went, mooching about, straight towards me, until he bumped into me and realised what he'd done. Back into a ball again!

Correct.
My neighbour has downsized his farm a bit but does OK making high end fancy cutlery and kitchen stuff from horn and Italian pewter. He's had a few articles in print and a program on the ABC about it. Not cheap but it sells. He's a big fan of the Texas Longhorns.
There's no way they'd fit though my cattle pens!
11 months and 5 days after breaking ground, I have a house again. No fridge / freezer, no bedroom suite, missing 2 screen doors, missing roller blinds, still need to back fill around the water tanks etc etc... but I'm over this building sh*t and with an esky, kettle and mattress I'm moving in tomorrow. Near enough is good enough.

Thanks, it's taken a lot of work and many years renovating properties to get to this stage. I could write a book on the dramas and sleepless nights and money pits we've been through. I've questioned if we were doing the right thing many times, and ended up cashing in a pension to fund it in the end.
On the bright side... I've put up a couple of sheds next to it to put my junk in...

I was going to move in there originally. It's about 30 metres from where I started building. I have water (2 x 5000 gallon tanks) a toilet (rented Portaloo) power (a transformer from the main line feeding the nearest town to my own power pole I had put in.) I did put a family size tent up inside the shed just for a bit more privacy and less wildlife!
My wife didn't like the idea of a years camping in Summer heat and Winter cold and we ended up finding a little rental cottage that's only about 3k's / 2 miles away.

I decided to build it for my visits back to Oz as my house is rented out, back half of the block is fence off, my neighbour has access to it and looks after it. My son tells me I would get $250 a week rent for it easy, I have set it up off the grid solar power and gas.
There seems to be a rental crisis going on at present 🤔
Journalists say in Brisbane there's thousands of homes & units owned by foreign investors who don't rent them out as it isn't viable for them. We're the lucky country for sure 🙀

I wanted mesh to stop walking dirt, mud etc in. The mesh we used has a little bit of sag in it. I'll give it a few weeks and see how it stands up to use. Won't be hard to add some more cross braces or another layer of mesh.

Last one I had was at home when a builder started work. He loved the builder. Builder made a fuss of him, dog begged for lunch, builder topped up his water bowl. Dog was tied up as all the gates and doors were open. Builder moved him when the sun was over head they got on great.
Same the next day. Him and the builder were best mates.
3rd day I wasn't there but the builder was happy to carry on. As soon as he got in the back yard the dog got hold of him, chewed him up a fair bit. Lots of claret from his hands and legs. Dog was only 30kg but really went to town on him.
Builder was OK about it, but it cost me a LOT of beers. Dog was fine as long as I was home, not when I wasn't. Should have realised that.
I love cattle dogs. A lot of work when they are young but they really are special.
Couldn't ask for a better loyal, rough and ready best mate.

I know you guys are downunder BUT! my neck won't swivel that much!
Spent the morning around the Torbay Steam Fair whilst I was in Devon last week.
I'm just full of admiration for the guys who keep these things going, you'd struggle to pick up spares on EBay.
I have a lot in the world to be grateful for, some my own doing and some just being fortunate, life's not perfect and I still have some dramas, but to roll out of bed and stand in the kitchen whilst the kettle boils and look out the window to this never fails to uplift me every morning. Moon going down over the hills as the sun lights them up on another beautiful day.

Absolutely. About 20 years back I made the decision to try somewhere new, various reasons, a change, a better standard of living, better weather, interesting wildlife. I looked at several countries and almost moved to Cyprus, after several visits I had work and accommodation lined up and I'd have kept an easier connection to the UK. Ended up in Qld, partly because I'd struggle to get in here after 40 but other countries were still available if it didn't work out. Australia's far from perfect, but as you say, on a global scale our issue pale into insignificance compared to a lot of places. Very happy to be here, if the clocks were turned back I'd certainly make the same decision again.

I did see one the other week but not if he/she was just visiting. I've not seen another one in the 18 months I've been here.
My other hobby/money pit, it's a 1964 EH Holden with lots of custom work done to it. Pretty much only the shell is almost standard, everything else is changed. Hoping to have it on the road next year.
My hotrod project. Based on a 1996 Wolseley (sort of an extended mini). Build in Wales, UK, in the early 90's, modified over the next 25 years and then sat a while when the owner/builder died. Now with me in France. Has a semi hopped up 350 chevy, 4 speed transit gearbox (apparently the done thing back in the day), ford capri lsd, full roll cage etc. The body is apparently made of 17 pieces from different cars mashed together. Needs full rewiring, interior making good, broken suspension sorting and new carb, new exhaust etc. Hopefully running next year, had hoped this year but other stuff to work on as you do
Stevel and Frenchy, both great ptojects.

I think when I was a working man, half of the year I was leaving home in the dark and not getting back home with any daylight left either. Now being retired I love to get out on the bike or in the car exploring what is around me, or even just sitting in the conservatory watching the birds in the garden.
We don't have a lot of exotic stuff in the UK but here's a snap of a Mandarin Duck that I took when I was in Devon for the New Year. Technically a non-native or "invasive" species and they are not supposed to be released into the wild, but they brighten up a lake a bit.

For that matter - great photos everyone!
20 years younger engine now. E-tec 3.3 H.O.
She look a bit heavy in the stern T24, what size is the E-Tec? Will the transom handle the extra weight & power I'm wondering. Reckon she'd flip at speed with a bit of chop / wake on the surface.

It's originally 3.3 liter 200 H.O.(~220hp@ prop shaft). All the weight is near transom at good weather. It faster so.
The transom will handle extra weight very well with trim tabs. Transom is also reinforced and equipped with jack up plate.
But to be honest, it*s not very stabile to ride near top speed, 66.4 knots, 123 kph (gps), with 26" OMC Raker,
which is too small, goes to rev limiter (6150 rpm) :whistling:
Double Post.
If it's unstable close to 66 knots, best to be safe and limit yourself to a lower, sensible max...say 50 knots

I have Eastern Browns, Red Bellied Blacks and Black Snakes here, along with Red Backs, Scorpions, Trap Door spiders and quite a few others.
By far the one that frightens me most are Kangaroo's. I've hit one hard in my ute, and had several near misses on the bikes. I always joke that if the wildlife here ever gets me it'll most likely be a bloody Roo.

Sounds like you have it sorted, good on you. 66+knots is waaay faster than anything my boat will do. :onya:

That's what took a mate out a couple of years ago, during the day also, hit him and took him straight off the bike .. instant death. Yeah they bother me also and stupid Emus
I wonder if the roo associated casualties exceed the number of casualties caused by the other (more creepy) dangerous animals in AU.
Found some stats for animal related deaths from 2001-2017...
Horses 172, Bovines 82, Dogs 53, Kangaroos 37, Snakes 37, Bees 31, Sharks 27 and Crocodiles 21.

Roo's are the highest or near the top of non domestic.
The others you have a lot more control over.

Sorry officer, the throttle got stuck.
A shed project for my Son and myself, 1998 T509 Triumph Speed Triple 885cc. Yesterday he got it started, no smoke, horrible noises or oil leaks.
I've got a few photos that don't involve bikes or cars, like one I took during a hike last summer. It was early morning, and the light through the trees was just perfect. I ended up printing it out and displaying it on a digital picture frame from https://www.nixplay.com/—it's been great for sharing moments like this. It's so cool to have it on rotation instead of just buried in my phone.
G'day mate and welcome to the nuthouse 🤫
I clicked on the link all I got was the website 🙄
Can you post the picture here ?
Saw the Ute hit 100,000k's this morning.

Not huge mileage but a lot of it has been renovating, moving house, building, moving house, moving bikes, fetching logs, gravel, timber etc. it's done some work and has been trouble free.
Apart from me being retired and the Mrs working from home, it's never been our main vehicle. We put 110,000K's on a new Rav-4 after buying the Ute, and more recently put 25,000 on a new Fortuner at the same time as the Ute.
No idea what the mileage would be including the bikes.
Had a few Mitsubishi's, Lancer / Triton etc that clocked up good mileage and then several Fords including 4 x Territory's (love that Barra motor) but I can't see me changing brands for a while. I'm having no dramas, enjoying driving, and getting good trade in's, as well as having a good local dealership with Toyota.
For a bottom of the range, cheap workhorse, I've got quite fond of it.

Good utes. I had Workmate 2.7, fully loaded everyday, mostly around city, did over 200th ks, one axle seal only thing that went wrong.
Been tidying up some family treasures at dad's and came across some interesting momentos and photos.
My grandfather rode in the Isle of Man TT races back in the 30's, he also competed in observed trials. This interesting medal was in his box of momento's.
20250607_100843.jpg
I was surprised / horrified to see a Swastika on his medal. I Googled the 1931 Sidcup Sixty Trial and found the medal was awarded to him for a Bronze Classification result.
Further investigation led me to discover that the Swastika symbol before being claimed by the Nazis was an ancient symbol of Good Luck. Who would have thought.
if that happened today, someone would be crying cultural appropriation . . .
The swastika is actually a sacred symbol in Hinduism and Buddhism. I'm of German origin and my Hindu Fijian Indian workmate loves to point that out on a regular basis and give me a hard time because my "bastard cousins stole it".
The Nazi salute was stolen from the Olympic games, they nicked a lot of stuff which is now only associated with them, who invented concentration camps (Clue, it wasn't the nazis).

Well the term was first used by Brits in the Boer War, but they weren't like the German version. It was a way to concentrate Boer farmers into small areas so they couldn't support the Boer fighters. The only reason for high deaths there was poor sanitation etc & near enough the same numbers of Brit soldiers died as inmates of the camps.
I've got a feeling the original Swastikas from India were often the other way around to the German one? Plus of course the Finnish airforce used Swastikas during the WW2, while fighting Russia & later Germany.

Correct. There are a couple of differences, rotation being one of them.
Who'd have thought a group devoted to our beloved GSX 1400's would be so educational? :happy1:
Just home from a friends Remembrance Day. He died 3 weeks ago.
No funeral, no church or chapel, just all his friends, family and neighbours at his property. Huge BBQ, everyone took mountains of food, little kids running around having fun, music playing, cows looking over the fence, cars turning up towing caravans, folk taking turns to say their bit, everyone telling their story's about him. There were 70 or 80 folk at his place when I left.
We looked after each other. I gave him eggs, he got his brother in law to give me a heap of Suzuki parts, I bought him a ute load of firewood, he gave me an old Villiers powered antique cement mixer, Roofy and I patrolled his place when he was away, he grew me gum tree seedlings in pots and much more. We only knew each other for about 5 years but got on so well, even if he did rename my stupid dog Rufus as Rupert! The world needs more folk like Nev. I'll miss him.
My random non bike photo.

R.I.P Nev. Only made it to 72.
Had a cancer removed from his brain, came good for a while, bought a new ride on mower, was getting back into it, everything looked positive, but it had spread and wasn't curable.
I was talking to a neighbour about Texas Longhorns. He sold two recently and may be parting with some more. They'd keep the grass down, but I'm not sure if I should just stick to slashing it with the Fergie.

The price wasn't as bad as I expected, but their heads won't fit through my cattle crush, cattle yard or loading ramp. The dog would have to calm down or I could see him being a Heeler kebab !

Sounds like a great send off Tony. My father in law passed away a few weeks ago (same age, cancer also). He was a retired police officer and with the police chaplain's assistance a regular church based funeral was arranged. He was an atheist like myself and I couldn't help but think how he would have much preferred something else.
My thoughts, ive lost so many great Mates, i dont do religion, surely we must meet up somewhere. Just how i look at it.

Keep using the Fergie...it's a great time to let your mind wander where it wants to. Don't often get that opportunity in our busy, modern lives.
Quote from: Pommeroy on Tuesday, 10 June 2025, 04:44 AMKeep using the Fergie...it's a great time to let your mind wander where it wants to. Don't often get that opportunity in our busy, modern lives.
Very true.
I was talking to someone about this. There's a similarity to being on my bike. I get left alone, my mind only thinks about what I'm going, it's actually a great escape mentally.
Although there are benifits to having a few cattle, I can't imagine my wife ever wanting to see them in the deep freeze. It's a drama for her when a hen passes away. Rather than a freezer full of meat I'm more likely to end up with the countries oldest cattle and some huge vet bills.
I might as well get her a donkey or alpaca or two!
Had three cows when we had some land. My dad was a butcher and when I said I needed to buy a freezer to put them in he said no, sell them and buy the cuts of meat you enjoy. After you've eaten the steak and roasts you finish up with a mountain of mince and sausages. Father in law was a sheep and beef farmer, I asked him what we should do with the land. Quick as a flash he said mow it !!
So we did. Like you Tony I enjoyed sitting on a mower mowing it :onya:
Sounds like you're mate had the greatest send off. How grand to have so many friends and family there telling stories and having a laugh, a true celebration of a life well lived.
Stick with the Fergie Tony. Cows are great animals but can cost if they get sick. I had a Jersey called Sally when i was really little, she was a great companion.
Greg I'm a Buddhist and I like to think of something similar to Valhalla for the meeting up process after we pass. Riding every day, beers forever and no hangover.
I don't think I'll ever die in battle lol but reincarnation Buddhism wise means you come back not necessarily in human form.
