Want to share my experience.

I want to have camera on a helmet, so it will see same as I'm. Top and side gopro helmet mounts seems ridiculous to me, so I desided to try chin mount.
GoPro curved mount is not enough curved for helmet chin, and it's black anyway. My main helmet is white, so I deside DIY a little.

  • White surfing mounts were ordered from eBay, and with dremmel tool I change it's shape.
  • After this, I mask helmet chin with plastic film.
  • Then, using epoxy putty stick, I attach mount to helmet chin, replicating exact shape of helmet curves
  • Next day, after putty was cured, I take new part off,
  • and using dremmel and file, remove everything was had to be removed
  • After grey putty was painted white, using extra strong 3M double side tape, I fix new mount to my helmet.

So I did a run, with this setup - there is example how it looks like:

I did a run, and... I did not like it...  :facepalm:
Camera on a chin, change helmets weight balance, making chin much more heavier. After some time (distance), it starts getting on my nerves, cause I had constantly hold my neck harder then usual. On a short runs, it would not cause ant issue, but on a long trips it will be quite pain in the neck :)

So, I desided to take if off and will think about something else. (Shoulder mount?...)
At least, I had some experience of handicraft, and may be it will be useful for others.

I need to go somewhere I've not been but won't know until I get there!

northern thanks for that comprehensive post.

The view is great but your comments re it's use in the real world are very thought provoking.

Cheers mate.

Yes thanks for that post. Shame it didn't work out for you.  Empty roads you have, if I had a stretch of road as uncluttered as that, reckon the tap would be open a bit wider on mine.

This road (on video) is one of my favorite B-roads. I have few routes what I'm riding when I want to clear my mind. Quite empty, quite good paivment, quite twisty...  :smitten:
Someday, I will film my favorite part of it (this time it starts raining, and I put camera away) and will share it here.

I have also other mounts, which I already test and some which I'm planing to test. Will post, when I'll have more time.

@KiwiCol
I were newer at New-Zealand, but I was under impression you should have some empty roads.
To be honest, I do not know, why I was under this impression  :whatever:

@northern
You're right, we do have the occasional empty road stretchs, mostly in the less populated regions of the west coast. Because we have only a couple of main roads that circumnavigate & criss cross the island, these roads are the tourist route and there's always plenty of busses & campervans & rental cars on this 'loop' road as well as the local traffic.

The roads you were on seemed fairly close to your home, ie: you got to clear road very quickly.

@KiwiCol
Road on my video is ~40km from my home, so I love to ride it from time to time. But you are right - those roads are rather empty, and that's why I love them :)

There is my other experiment, which I did not like much. May be facing backward it would be more interesting...

Ive been using this setup.

Have a new camera now but mount in same place and removed heat shield as new camera ok without it.

Give some fun views in the twisty bits.

Mic can get swamped with engine and exhaust noises at times, i just turn down the recording volume.
