First world problem: My drone isn't expensive enough...

Not that I have one at all, but the DJI range kinda goes like this

DJI spark around $700 AUD

DJI Mavic Pro Platinum $1900 AUD

DJI Mavic 2 $2300 AUD

and anyone feeling really cashed up can go for one of these...

Pros:

Video resolution 5.2K-6K (aka sufficient for Hollywood blockbuster movie quality, so shitloads more than almost anyone needs)

It would have to pretty much be a full time job to justify that though.

It's cheaper I guess than a helicopter plus crew plus fuel plus camera etc

I was lucky enough to be able to fly the Mavic Pro a couple of weeks ago - very easy to control and an awesome bit of kit for the price. So smooth and clear. The Trace function where it follows/leads a subject wouldn't be much use when your on a motorbike, but you can't have everything. Fold's up small and you can currently pick up 2 spare batteries with the sale that JB HiFi are having on them. All fits into a small case that would be easy to travel with.

A little hard to justify the $1600 price tag but that would be the one I would go for if I had the money.

My boy is charging $100 a time to video your property with his Mavic Pro. Doin ok too. They are a clever bit of kit.

I went for a ride out with a couple of friends recently, one of whom carried a Mavic 2 stashed away in his backpack. We stopped off at a suitably scenic location where he let it loose and I have to say I was blown away by the quality of the images. The camera is made by Hasselblad and it's mounted on a gimbal system so the movies are rock steady.

All that quality does come at a price though.

I have a DJI phantom 2 with gimbal and I only paid £70 for it, I don't really know why I have it 
Flying it is a bit daunting as not used to it and it doesn't have FPV not had a chance to do filming yet but will soon hopefully.
Would love to take a  shot of my house I don't feel comfortable flying it around peoples property though as I know I would have issue with it

I know right!! i would love the inspire 2 bu cant justify it quite yet.... The movies i am making so far are pretty decent and get better with every time i fly.. I will stick with my Mavic for a while longer lol..

I am looking at getting my CAA certification and PFCO cert too end of the year. That would mean i can fly commercially and inside no fly zones with the right docs.

Son shot some footage of their motorhome while driving along. Asked how the hell did he do that. He said his missus was driving the bus and he was laying on the bed at the back looking out the window controlling the drone....clever and great footage.

Drones are great when anyone flys them sensibly. The pictures can be unreal from the cameras.
Its well worth having a go if you get the chance.
Even a basic childs toy drone can be great fun.

Interesting that half a dozen folk with easily available drones could, at the same time, shut down airports at Heathrow, Gatwick, Birmingham, Manchester, etc etc.

We had guys at the recent Commonwealth Games here ready to shut down any drones. The technology is already available.

The government have been told about the tech here and know it works as well but now they have to make a decision, that's why it's taking so long to implement.

I am not so sure it's as easy as these companies make out. The police here already considered shooting it down, but they were worried about the risk of stray bullets. Which is fair enough, this isn't America. You've also got to be able to hit a tiny moving target in dim light, so I think that's a non-starter.

They have a gun that fires a net with weights at the corners. I'm sure that would work fine if you could get close enough, but over the area of an airport a drone would be able to zoom about and dodge you all day long. Don't forget, nobody can actually take off or land while you are haring about in your van trying to get a shot off.

Then there's the radio jamming kit. That might work but unfortunately it would knock out a fair bit of important radio spectrum that you actually need to run a modern airport. And how long do you jam it for? The perpetrator just has to lie low for a while and come back later.

Having said that, it's very likely the Army has some sort of countermeasures that are effective but if they have they'll be keeping it secret from us for obvious reasons. And it could be that they can't deploy it because of the risk of damaging aircraft.
