Porters Pass here is around 3,200ft.  A very steep gradient towards the top, heavy vehicles are down to a crawl there.

We here in Christchurch, have the Port Hills. They separate the city from the port. It's an extinct volcano that's been opened to the sea through erosion, anyway, I regularly ride a circuit round & through the rim, that's some very narrow unforgiving crappy sealed roads that go over 1000ft in many places. It also drops down to sea level in less than 1 km , so some steep gradients there too.

Hardknott is a 1in3, so about 33% in foreign terms for part of the climb. All single track too with very sharp hairpins on the steepest bit & goes past an old Roman fort of the same name.

I'll see what I can find out in regard to gradients on Porters etc.

Another great day on the right side of the grass.😎

I think the steepest hill in the UK is Porlock hill in Somerset, it's not very long but by fuck is it steep.  There are a lot of hills of similar gradient around Exmore (what goes up must come down) and it's a great place to ride.  Er indoors does not like it at all as some of the hairpins take you back on yourself but 30 foot up.  Went there on my own last weekend, brilliant.
Keep the rubber side down.          Mick

Got some "official" pictures back from when I did the Prescott Hill Climb the other week in the pouring rain

With something like the Tex Andy you only have the tank and beak on the bike to polish, everything else is jet wash. These days (since retiring) I'm much more into riding than cleaning, must admit I do miss my "hobby", but just love riding the Tex whatever the weather (well maybe not ice and snow, but you get the drift). The thing was made to get grubby, I just oblige !!!!

Well this answers that https://www.nationalgeographic.co.uk/travel-and-adventure/2018/06/top-5-steepest-roads-uk

The steepest hill is a housing estate in Wales...

There are houses off that road but it's the road up the front / ocean side to Harlech Castle. If done it on many bikes, last time I think was in a VW or Mini. It's quite twisty so so can't carry any speed, more of an issue than being extra steep.

Yes those pictures were from my second run in the afternoon literally just after it had just stopped its latest downpour. They didn't do any on my first run in the morning due to it pi$$ing down with rain - some of the others who I went with managed to video me, and you can def see the rain slanting in heavily in the video.

I wouldn't have minded but the forecast for the whole weekend was "possibility of light remote showers" - hmm more like "it's going to rain cats and dogs most the time".

Still had a good time though, some fantastic bikes at the meet

@Hooli I've had a look & found Porters Pass is an average of 16%, some steeper bits towards the top but it's nothing compared to Hardknot.
The 'steepest street in the world' (Probably the steepest residential St) is here in Dunedin, it's called Baldwin St, & it has a gradient of 1:3.41 (up to 35%), it's hard enough walking up that thing & you guys have a whole hill of the same!
Agreed, you wouldn't even think of getting off in the steep bits for a pic, the bike would fall down the hill!  A challenging ride for sure.

Ahhh, but do those guys have 'Wheelie bin' races down it? no? What about a Jaffa run?  :happy1:

Wheelie bin race: student from the Uni jumps into said rubbish bin & free wheels down the hill, no steering or brakes. First to the bottom wins. Unfortunately at the bottom it's an intersection with a busy arterial road.  Mayhem, injuries & think there was a death as well once.

Jaffa Race: Jaffa, small round lolly with orange coloured & flavoured outer shell with a hard chocolate centre, about the size of a small marble. Put numbers on said lollys, people get assigned a number. Take thousands of them to the top & tip them out! first lolly down the hill wins. A sea of lollys rolling down the hill, quite a sight tbh.  :whatever: :happy1:
