Hi everyone as I mentioned in my intro post I am resurrecting my late fathers gsx1400. I thought I would start this thread so I can upload photos and ask questions as I go rather than asking lots of questions in different sections.

So here is the starting point

Started by taking the rear wheel out and giving it and the axle and swing arm a good clean. I have left the chain on for now but I will be sourcing new chain and sprockets before it it is ridden as the existing chain and is at the limit of adjustment and it has sat on the bike for the last 3 years not moving.

I then turned my attention to the exhaust which I believe is the original exhaust. I took the two silencers off and rubbed them down very gently with 2000 wet & dry and then polished them up with autosol.

After

My original plan for the headers was to remove them to clean them up, however after mentioning it on here and being told that the header bolts are prone to snapping I thought I would clean them up while on the bike and will deal with the header bolts when I replace the exhaust in the future.

Before

After

I then decided to tackle the sides of the camshaft cover

Thanks Del I hope so got lots more wet & dry sanding to do on the engine covers but will get there eventually.

I have found out that it needs a new rear tyre, the front has quite a bit of tread left. It also needs new chain and sprockets, also the forks need to be stripped down and the seals and bushes replacing as they are weeping a little bit. It could also do with a new headlight and new clock body because for some reason the clock housing has black back instead of chrome. These will be bought as and when funds become available.

I took the belly pan off and it has a crack in it. I could repair it with a fibreglass repair kit but I think I prefer the bike without it. So it might go up for sale at some point.

Check the age of that front tyre Paul. Probably best to put 2 new ones on.  Keep on with the good work  :onya:
