Seems you guys are right. According to gocompare.com:

"75% charged a cancellation fee and for 44% of those that did charge a fee, it was greater than £50. Just 2% of those that levied a fee charged less than £20."

That was a survey of car insurance policies.

I have found that Carole Nash allowed me to make changes on a classic bike policy without charging, although to be fair it wasn't the cheapest insurer.

I've rung Devitt today (tues) and explained that ,how could I know about  cancellation fees when I've not received any paper work or even an email policy document.there answer was we did send relevant paperwork,it must have been lost in post,anyhow I lost my polite phone manner and told them what I thought of them but I'm afraid it falls upon deaf ears,one lives and learns doesn't one, by the way I don't receive any fees back for the 4 a half months remaining as that is mentioned in the documents I didn't receive,...

Consider yourself lucky Daytona. Most likely said they don't pay claims that happen on days that end in 'Y'. That too would have been mentioned in the Docs you didnt receive.

Wouldn't surprise me col,I remember some years ago a guy had his motorcycle stolen,it was a write up in motorcycle news about it.his insurance company refused to pay him out because "he wasn't with the bike when it was stolen". Top that one,?

Since my return to the UK, I have been added to 3 car policies and 1 motorcycle policy and there was no admin fee on any of them. On 2 of the car policies my parents actually got a refund (because believe it or not I'm younger than them). The 1200 Bandit went up by 17 pound because of another named driver.
All of these policies are through English companies.
