Tapped in the arse (No. nothing gay.)

Well, today I stopped to give way to a bus entering the roadway from the bus stop (legal requirement here, plus I'm nice) and another one tapped me in the arse

Luckily as far as I can tell it's a scratch on the can, and the topbox now flops around like a dick in a hat.

Weird though as there's no real visible damage to the box on the plate it mounts on...

It's a givi 40 litre topbox.  It's similar to this  https://www.givi.it/cases/Monolock/E370 maybe it is that.
I'm not sure whether mine is monolock or monokey, though I think it's monolock.
I can't seem to find any definitive comparison pictures...

It's this mounting kit https://shop.sydneycitymotorcycles.com.au/p/8750918/givi-527fz-topcase-monorack-sidearms-to-suit-suzuki-gsx1400-2002-june-2005.html with M5M top plate.

Any ideas as to what could be causing it to be loose, and yet no obvious damage?

Probably stretched the plastic a bit were it mounts i use a peace of thin carpet cut to shape and put it in between the box and mount to take up the slack .
i intend to live for ever or die trying !!

M5 is monokey,,,,m5m is monolock,,,,,the first one monokey is designed for heavier, faster, use, monolock is for smaller slower bikes,,,like my scooter ,

As Daytona says, if you have the wrong mounting plate, that could be your problem exactly.

I'd also check the lock in the bottom of the box though (that bit on the top plate that the box clips onto), as its possible the lock in the box is foobarred.

Best way to check if its the plate or the box is ask another mate who has a Givi top box if you can borrow his box for 2 minutes - and see if that flops around. If it doesn't then the box plate lock is screwed. If it does then the top plate is screwed ( or if you have a givi side case, try fitting that, as the mount is exactly the same)

This is the only box I have. Mates have other brands.

Maybe I can convince the council bus mob to buy me a new monokey plate and box...

Have any of the rubber grommets gone ?

There are supposed to be grommets?  Where?
So yeah, probably.

Perhaps it is the M5m then I was just going by some second-rate pictures.

The 4 rubber grommets on my Givi monokey are installed on the mounting plate. One at each corner.

Hmm I wonder if I can get those anywhere.

These are what you need Mike, 4 rubbers, one for each corner. Available from a stockist in Sydney. The part number is Givi Z126 if you want to search elsewhere.

Well, I'm dissapointed you have let opportunity slip by in concern for a top box.
If you are ever hit by public transport, fall down and scream "Oh my back, my back", then in 6 months you have a brand new everyday bike and you can remove the luggage from the 1400 restoring it to its true glory.
May the sun be warm & shining and your roads be smooth & winding.
