Pressure regulator clip

My 14 let me down yesterday for the first time in almost 200,000kms. It wouldn't rev then just stopped. Blocked fuel filter I hoped but on inspection it was OK (external filter). All put together again I tried starting it while waiting for Irish to return with a trailer. Bloody thing ran perfectly. I thought it was probably water in the system so after a good test ride I thanked Irish for his help & headed home. About 80kms later it stopped again so after the same flush procedure it started & I got home.

On inspection this morning I found the fuel pressure regulator clip was missing & the regulator was almost out of it's port so I think luck was on my side being able to get home.

So the point of this little rant is a reminder that next time you have the tank off is to cable tie the clip to the body because fixing it on the side of the road would be near impossible without the right tools.
If you look like your passport photo then you're too sick to travel.

Hooli

The one inside the tank with the white plastic clip? I've had that fall off twice over the years.

Notty

sorry for the perhaps stupid question - but where is the clip?  :bugga:
The older I get the better I was
The problem with retirement is that you cant take a day off

It's the part at the top right of the picture. Just near the number 2. They only clip on & are prone to coming off.
BTW, take note of the prices in AU$

There have been a few instances in the past whereby the clip holding the fuel pump assembly together breaks or comes (springs) off inside the tank so disabling the pump from working – hence your 14 won't start (last thing you want miles from home or on a wet windy night). So this tip/fix is more preventative maintenance to help support the clip and stop it from breaking / springing off in the first instance.

The original fix for this was to use an electrical tie to hold the pump assembly in place, and whilst this is good for a "get you home" fix, over time petrol can affect some of the plastic electrical ties available on the market so causing the pump to fail again!

See Note 6 under "A few notes and tips" in the following article http://gsx1400owners.org/forum/index.php?topic=430.0

A better solution determined subsequently is to wrap stainless wire around the pump to provide extra support to the clip to prevent it snapping or springing off. The pictures below (courtesy of Speedy1959) show the original pump and then how the wire is attached.

just an illustration of my fix:

thinking a stainless steel hose clamp rather than wire. any idea what size in mm i need. i know lazy, should get it out, measure myself. help appreciated. just easier than out, measure, go and get, then refit. i have a huge selection at work.

I was using zip ties, because I had them on a road. But even using them I face an issue when it's hard to insert fuel pump unit back to fuel tank, because zip tie make it's wider. Have to place zip tie lock right, so it not disturb inserting pump in to the hole.

SS clamp (if I understand right, what you mean) may be to bulky, so you could be not able to fit pump unit back.

Where is problem with this issue? Plastic clamp broke?

Look at it more as preventative maintenance V_i_c_i  - the clip on the regulator can break - and has done recently - on a number of members machines, causing the bike to not start - often a few miles away from home. By adding the cable tie (or a similar clamp) it prevents that happening and you breaking down.

not broken but get loose over time. And just not able to hold preasure regulator in place.
Take look on a picture - white plastic clamp is complacently in place, but it's not tightly against filter housing, where is a hook. And because of this, fuel regulator felt out of its place.

Just to add to this.
I have approched the servicability of the fuel filter diffrently and thought you guys would be interested to see what the original fuel filter looks like on the inside.

grog

Hullo Bielie, been a while. glad to hear from you.

Hi Grog it has been a very long time.
Between my wife and the new business I lost track of time, done less than 600k in 3 years on my 14 but she has had 5 oil changes 😂 I decided to look over her properly and start riding again now that the business is doing well.
Found she had fueling issues at high load and high rpm, found she was leaning out and I decided to sort it and renewed the fuel pump and done the same filter mod like you but it still is in tank.
