A question for you. Brother in law has decided to become a Whiskey drinker. I need some knowledge......
So what is a single malt ?  You blokes speak of a Nice Single Malt.
What is the best Whiskey. What other facts can you throw my way?
Thanks in advance  :onya:
Another great day on the right side of the grass.😎

I give you all I got: If you drink to much of any whiskey you get terribly drunk. No headache though from a good one

Ahhhh a man after me own'art!

I am an Irish delicious Jameson man to the core - been there and have the taster certificate!
The only other one is Glenmorangie but will tolerate a Glenlivet NĂ durra - or if the wallet will allow a single cask.

Remember! the old saying never drink whisky without water and never drink water without whisky. You only need a dash to release the olefins and hence the smoothness! As the water is added, the ethanol spreads uniformly, allowing more of the guaiacol to reach the surface and hence the aroma. The strange behaviour of alcohol in water to the benefit of the connoisseur. Remember! never put ice in your tibble as it locks up the flavours.

Mmmmm ... me think I'll have a tibble!! the sun is over the yard somewhere!
I need to go somewhere I've not been but won't know until I get there!

He'll be missing out if he's only drinking whiskey. Whisky on the other hand.  :stir:

The thing with Whisky is that all single malts are different depending on where it's made (peaty water/type of fuel used in the malting process) and how it's stored the barrels last liquid (port/clarret/other) and the age of the whisky.
Then after everything down to the person drinking it's  personal taste.
I know that's no help but all I can advice is for him to go to a few tastings and try several kinds untill he finds one/some he likes.
only a slightly modified gsx1400

Depends Col. There is Irish and American Whiskey. Then there is Scottish and Canadian Whisky. The real shame is on me for spelling it with a small "w".

Sorry i cant help Kiwi, i drink too much beer to have any space left for whisky. Only one i know is Glenfiddich, my mate left 1/2 bottle here, couldnt let it go to waste. Not sure how it rates but rated highly with me. My only spirit drink in 25 yrs.

I drink Laphroiag which is a very peaty single malt  and has a very medicinal taste infact during prohibition in the states it was the only scotch exported to America as a medicine and was only available from a doctor ( who says scotch is not good for ya ! ).
I also realy enjoy the japanese whisky the yamasaki is a very sweet smooth whisky and very very easy to drink
i intend to live for ever or die trying !!

Kiwifruit.... that's like asking "how long is a piece of string?"

All the answers so far are right... but as they say...one mans tipple is another's poison.  I would never put water in my whisky unless it was full cask... hate laphroiag.... love Macallan but has to be 18 or 25 year old...  I've tried a few other names but there are hundreds not yet tasted.

Tell your buddy... start with one, try others, and enjoy the journey  :onya:

I'm a strong believer in single malt / Non blended.

Been a glennfiddich drinker because I like valleys and I like venison.   But seriously it tastes good and is affordable.

I like peaty too and had always been meaning to try laphroaig BUT the description of it as medicine like scares me.  For example I HATE southern comfort.

I have 3 half bottles of glennmorangie to try...  Each aged in a different type of wine barrel.

Maybe we need a gsx1400 tasting night...
