Power-commander is not only for extra power. Changing  exhaust or intake (air filter) will mess up the fuel map. So it's better to use it.
regarding legality - in Estonian laws, modification of intake/fueling is also forbidden by regulations, but there is no way police will look under my bike plastik to catch me. Even MOT never look on this. At least for now.
I do not know about German MOT and police control, but it's not an issue to take off PC before MOT and put it back after it's passed.
Autotune... I have it, but personally I do not think is's really worth it. Dyno is better solution, but it's depending of tuners skills... Your choice  :hat:

Andre

Yes, changing exhaust or airfilter will mess up the map. You have to readjust it, which is something Autotune is supposed to do by changing the map of Powercommander. If you only have PC, then you will need the adjustments done on a dyno everytime you change exhaust or filter make/model.

I assume there are many more tuners that can adjust the PC than there are tuners that can make the changes directly to the ECU, as this requires special equipment and knowledge. The latter is likely to be more expensive than the former.

As to the law and practice by MOT and police, it is the same as in your country. You might be unlucky though, and the police knows that the 14 does not have a lambda sensor (in case of AT installed). I know several cops who own a 14. Or you are unwise and open the seat in their presence, for example to get required documents you have stored there. They are well aware of the Powercommander but need a court order to open your seat compartment unless you open the seat voluntarily. Many have mounted their PC under their seat, but it sounds like you have the PC mounted somewhere else.

The biggest problem here is when you get in an accident and the bike is checked out by an expert. If you  made illegal changes, you have been driving without "vehicle approval" and your insurer will not take over the costs of the accident. They may pay the bills for people insured in the accident but will recover the money from you. This may mean that you have to pay for the rest of your life. Not even talking about the charges the courts will throw at you.

MRG, polished or chromed. love it. ive polished the hell out of mine several times, still looks unloved. annoys me big time.

northern

@Andre yes, insurance are tough. In our country it's cheaper and more forgiving as in Germany or Austria. From the other side - I'm lucky what I didn't had much issues with insurance companies.
This is how my PCV and autotune are mounted on my 14: http://gsx1400owners.org/forum/index.php?topic=705.msg11069#msg11069

Andre

Been lucky myself, never had to file an insurance claim.

Thanks for the link.
