Mr Gee, when your bike stops, what do you do to get it going?

They were certainly up there for a while. Not so much now, I rarely hear their mentioned with the later models. Maybe just the circles I mix in, but the Pommies and Yanks seem to be the leaders now.

Wait. It works again eventually. Sometimes in second, sometimes minutes, sometimes longer but so far, it has always simply, come back to life  :whatever:

Tried all sorts, waggling this, wiggling that. Tapping switches, flicking relays but nothing works, excepting waiting.  :confused1:

Waiting suggests cooling, my cx500 stator would break down when hot, and the bike stopped running, and after a while, when cooler, it would produce a big fat spark and away we went. Could this somehow be your problem, something dying when the engine gets to a certain temp ?? I mean i'm just guessing here. When i first had my First 14 back in 2002, i'd get 20 miles from home and get a red light on the dash, the book said do not run when the red light is on. turned out to be a sensor breaking down when hot, something to do with cam sensing or summat. It was just a magnet and was replaced under warranty. Anyway I'm rambling now, food for thought  eh !!  :coffeescreen:

Hmmm, have you tried a new regulator, one of the MOSFET ones, or a known good working unit?
Another option is the battery. Some bmws have had a "hot start" issue, where the bike will stall when the engine is hot and not restart again until cooled.  This turned out to be an issue with the size (gauge) of the wiring from the battery to the starter motor being too small. Each cable has a current rating at a maximum temperature. When hot, the current rating of the cable was not enough to carry enough amps to spin the starter.  This would eventually damage the starter relay.  The fix by bmw  was a second starter cable wired in parallel to the first, the two of them combining to create enough "hot" condition current rating.  Ideally it would have been better to replace with an overall heavier gauge cable, but anyway.  Another part of it was the thermal rating of the actual battery, the bmw oem was not strong enough at high temp to give the demanded amps, plus the poor cable selection meant that the battery wasnt getting charged by the alternator/generator, plus they put the battery directly above the engine (heat rises....).

So a stronger battery also helped with that.  I've got a metal jacketed odyssey battery plus the second starter cable and no hot start issues on my 09 K1300GT.

My point being, do a load test on the battery, ideally when the fault occurs, with a multimeter to see if you get >10v when trying to restart, and also look at the cable gauge between the battery and starter. If <10v, suspect the battery or the cable connectng to it.
I try to take one day at a time, however sometimes several days catch up with me at once.

Several modern Triumphs had the same issue with undersized starter cables too.

Ryobi generator on Facebook. Made her an offer, replied won't start now, just take it free. Spent two hours this morning, washed it, drained tank, carb & fuel lines blown out. New fuel & cleaner additive F10, runs perfectly 😀

suggest to move this post to the "what did you get for free" section, as technically you didn't buy it.... :stir:

Do we have a "what did you con someone out of today?" Thread?

Swap 4 broken Xbox M8...

Bought a 1/2" drive Imperial 6Pnt socket set...working on a mate's TE20 tractor over the weekend. He's fallen out of love with it, and has gone and bought a tidy Massey 35.

Yeah but I have the same problem when its cold, too.

Like now, put away a few days ago running but it won't start today.

Clocks sweep when I turn it on but nothing.

Thanks for the input, all suggestions gratefully received, however.

14amp hour battery, giving 13.8v, dropping to 12ish when underload starting

Plus I have fitted a secondary, earth cable, as well.  :onya:

OK, battery good, cables good. Starter relay? Swap out with a known good one.

Does the efi pump prime when you turn ignition key on and red kill switch on?

Another possibility is corroded switch contacts up at both the starter button and the kill switch.

Mr Gee, try covering your other bike in the shed, the 14 may be being a sulky b**ch because she can see the other bike, hide it & see if her attitude improves.  :smoke:
