Quote from: KiwiCol on Tuesday, 14 October  2025, 07:00 PMAs I mentioned somewhere, I've been thinking about getting another dirt bike.  Had them years ago, had so much fun on them. But, I'm sooo much older now, more unfit and waaay heavier.  The thought & the inclination is there, but then I sorta come back to reality, I aint gonna bounce like I used to and on those things, off road, you're gonna come off for certain. Think I should just stick to the memories & use the quad if I wanna go off roading. Seeing you guys on here with them fed the fire I guess, ya lucky buggers!

It was actually my Mrs who told me to go and buy one. I was unsure.  She said "You aren't going to get any fitter or stronger or better suited in the future, do it now" She reminded me that my parents saved up for their retirement but left it too late now can't do much due to their age and health.

We made our wills not long back.

The Busa's and Park Runs didn't finish me off, or my bad heart or the snakes here, I think this may be her next plan!

It's a cunning plan...you could fall off, or get hopelessly lost, or hit a roo, or get bitten by something venomous while taking a photo, or be cleared up by a dozy road train driver, or squished by a falling gum tree branch, or...the list goes on.

Nonetheless, enjoy every minute of the new adventures

116k's / 72 miles round trip for this mornings coffee.

Put the bike away now for the weekend.
Much prefer weekday rides.
Less traffic, cops, tourists etc.

They Jacaranda's flowering in the background Tony ? Not a bad display whatever they are.
Another great day on the right side of the grass.😎

Yeah, huge difference from where I am. Mine, the neighbours and the local town are all pretty bare. Just a few new shoots and no flowers at all.

Head down the range, only 50k's or so and they are all out in flower with heaps of colour. In bloom everywhere.

I have half a dozen large ones and half a dozen smaller, if you don't walk up close you wouldn't know they were Jacaranda, or even alive.

This afternoon I was riding a ride on lawn mower. Never used one before, but was asked if I could cut the grass while step son is away.  Hmmm, yeah ok. Going alright for a while, then made an error stopping before a 7' drop off an embankment, so over I go!!
It was ok on the way down, just the bit at the bottom caused a bit of grief.  Mower nosed in, I fly over & land on me side, the mower falls on top of me!  Get myself out but I'm hurt. I can't get up.  Mrs comes down to help & I get standing. Mowers a mess, battery hanging out, front wheels pointing in different directions, engine cover smashed & ripped off. I'm covered in mud head to toe, glasses bent up & laying 6 feet away, cause my head hit hard.
Adrenaline must of kicked in cause I managed to right the mower & drag it towards the edge of the grass. A couple of workers on site came & gave us a hand to get the mower back up on the bank, else it would have gone under water when the tide came in.
I'm pretty sore now though, the right hand is swollen & muscles across my chest are very sore. Nowt broken, just strains & sprains, says doc kiwicol. And it's my throttle hand too, oh well, we got 7 days of heavy rain predicted, so probably not missing anything.  Hope I can still mount the discs on Monday, dunno how I'll go with the front axle nut though.

Beer oclock I reckon, even opening a can is a struggle . . .  oh yeah, I'm home alone, Mrs is housesitting & grandkid minding, so gotta fend for myself.
😎  Always looking for the next corner.  😎

lurch

Sounds like somewhat of a lucky escape.

I've had the pleasure of doing something similar. We used to live on acreage with a steep section. I was mowing whilst home alone and rolled the ride on down the hill. Dislocated my shoulder, damaged the engine cowl and spilled my bloody beer!

Far out Col, not at all good. Nothing  broken a bonus. We get injured out of the blue, as they say, shit happens. Get well soon.

Hooli

Sounds a bit extreme just to avoid mowing the lawn Col

Sorry to hear that Col. Hope you recover quickly.

Because you hit your head hard, watch out for concussion symptoms. If they occur, don't ignore them.  See your GP, and ask to be referred to a concussion service.

It's taken me two years to come right after a concussion caused by, on its face, a relatively minor incident. Specialist input early on was invaluable.

"She'll be right" isn't always the way to go!

Col not to mention the seat design on most modern dirt bikes would give most of us a "wedgie" not unlike a colonoscopy 🤣🤣🤣

Yes definitely.

Thanks guys, pretty rough night.  Right hand is still swelling with bruising covering the palm area.  Not broken as I can move all the pinkies, just tissue damage I'd say.  I'm wearing a wrist splint that I already had & that seems to help because it restricts movement.

Hope to be good to go again in a few days.  Got notice the new discs are with the local carrier now, so Monday is the day - if the hand is a lot better by then.
