I've never bothered before but some members have shown interest in the bike so I'm going to document the restoration of the 6/2005 red/black Suzuki GSX1400 I bought yesterday 5th June 2019. History unknown.
The bike was advertised in an internet site for $4000 but looked really sad in the photo's so an initial offer of $3000 was submitted. The dealer rang back & we agreed on $3500 pending an inspection but don't come tomorrow as the workshop want to check it over. Next day he phones again to say the mechanic is having problems with the fuelling & can I come the next day. What's the problem Mr Dealer? It won't rev past about 5000. Blocked filter I said. Now me being me, I took the tank with the external filter attached off my B/W K5 and headed to Newcastle the next day. Long story short, old mate couldn't get it revving but after hooking up my tank it was perfect. Dealer suggests they replace the filter & pump or give me the bike at my original offer. There's nothing wrong with the thing except it's blocked so money was handed over & I'm off back to Sydney with a 1400 on the trailer.
My dilemma ... Do I do this up to sell or keep? I've had 24 hours to think about it now so I've decided it's a keeper and will be polished within an inch of it's life and my high mileage blue/white K5 bought back to standard and sold. A lot of the bling from that bike will go on the new one.
The first purchase tonight ... https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Proflow-610-05R-Billet-Fuel-Filter-5-16-Barb-Red-30-Micron/322895866741?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

I know Jeff but mine will have gold wheels & handlebars and also the dual exhaust that Suzuki should have stayed with.
Day one of the restoration saw the bike loaded on to the lift so bits could be removed. First to go is the bodywork& the Ventura rack which turned out to be slightly difficult. Please tell me why someone uses Loctite with a nyloc nut.
The motor needs to go next but first the Yoshi System needs pulling off. With plenty of Nutcracker sprayed on I was hoping that no screws would break. I didn't break a screw but a Chinese Allen key that I modified twisted and broke instead.
I thought is was a bit of licorice Pete.
Loctite, especially red, is en vogue. Had to get a 3-arm puller to get a front sprocket off as it had been "glued" on with red loctite on the shaft.
Normally I don't remove the oil cooler when taking off the exhaust but this time it was a necessary to gain better access to the centre pipes and it had to come off anyway. Luckily the screws all came out without damaging any threads. I say luckily because who ever fitted the system used stock length bolts instead of 5mm longer meaning only about four threads are being used.
So the Yoshi pipes are off & look filthy so I grabbed the worse of the four to see how it would come up with a polish. Looks OK to me.

To get rid of the tarnish I use a Scotch-Brite light deburring wheel https://www.3m.com.au/3M/en_AU/company-au/all-3m-products/~/Scotch-Brite-Light-Deburring-Wheel/?N=5002385+3293241551+4294942426&preselect=3293786499+4294939838&rt=rud
followed by the usual sisal & loose leaf calico mops.
Try this autosol stuff, I got it from Bunnings.
Just dabbed it on with a old piece of car wash sponge. Left it there for a few minutes and wiped it off.
You can see the section that I didn't put any on as comparison. No polishing done yet on the pipe.
These are the pipes on my VFR800. Worked a treat so need to now take some time and take the fairings off and do the rest of the exhaust.
I'm Jealous... you got all the exhaust studs out without any of them snapping..
I soaked mine for 2 weeks - spraying twice a day. 2 came out clean and easy, the other 6 snapped.. I've still got to drill out 2 more today and re-tap the threads. Then I'll finally be able to install my new headers and collector.

I guess I was lucky that whoever fitted the Yoshi system used stock 1400 bolts which are 5mm too short meaning only about 4 threads are in contact. Any deeper without something like Never Seize & I'd have had problems.
@Snapey what are you running the wheel on, a drill or something smaller like a dremel?

I like the pink wheels Pete. As for those polishers it is all about torque 3 phase is the way to go.
Start of today.
Lunch time.
Now ... all stripped & the cleaning has begun but first I had to modify the engine stand.
No polish here. The swing arm came up clean & ready to be put away until needed.
One GSX1400 frame hanging over my kero bath to prepare for blasting & paint.
Bloody hell you work fast! And what a workshop! So very jealous.
Are you sending the frame to someone for blasting and painting?
Brilliant work Snapey.
Very very impressive Pete. If I wore a cap I'd take it off to ya :hat: :onya:

Interesting to note that the seat section of your frame has rusted as badly as mine had..I don't think Mr Suzuki puts much paint on that area to start with
I know you're probably already aware of it, but when you reassemble..
Engine in frame first, followed by wiring loom and then air box. If you try refitting the loom after the airbox and throttle bodies, you won't get it in...Been there and got the t-shirt :onya:
Refitting the engine is also made easier if you lie it on it's side on suitable padding and then fit the frame over it.

That's just red dust on the frame mate . The back section might not have been in the shade.
Are you sure about the air box Froudy. I was told it won't come out with the engine in place but I tried anyway. I couldn't get it out so I can't see it going in after the engine.
Definitely engine on it's side for install.
There is one thing about stripping these things that I wish Mr Suzuki would address ... connectors. Some you push the lever & some you pull. Is it too much to ask to have them all the one way?
Snapey, connectors are stupid. So different on lots of vehicles. Most annoying are the ones that can be plugged into wrong spot, each one is not unique. Korean cars are the worst for this problem.

HOW TO Free stuck screws with too much Loctite on them
Here's a good tip if you have a screw that's had too much Loctite put on it, and it just refuses to budge. Heat the head of the screw with a soldering iron for a while (be careful not to melt any surrounding plastics). This will melt the Loctite, and hey presto the screw will come out much more easily!
I don't think a soldering iron would have been able to do the job as the mass of sprocket and shaft is considerable (so was the amount of loctite  ). Puller worked great and I now have a set of them in my toolbox.
You have been working hard Pete 👍
Nice work.
Even the blue Loctite on the two rear engine mounts needs heat. I used a hot air gun.
Another one for you experts. The frame mounted cable ties or the base for them that are pushed in to the frame holes. I looked through the Mick Hone site and searched every name I could think that they might be called but no joy. Are they a Suzuki part & if so a name or part No. please.

I seem to have spent the day cleaning & polishing. While the forks are apart the legs get a quick polish but with no oil in stock assembly will wait until tomorrow. Photo's are before & after shots of a fork leg and the bike as it sits today.
It's been a bit quiet regarding the re-build of the red/black 14 lately. I've been cleaning & painting a few bits but I've got three rego's happening ATM and a number of "urgent" paying jobs have come my way too. About the only thing I've done is resurrect some stock handlebars & centre stand and connect up some wiring. The wheels are in pretty poor condition so more painting to do there.

I aim for a short ride once a week but with all the projects it usually turns in to fortnightly ... which reminds me of another little job. The Kat still has tubed tyres & I want to fit tubeless valves which aren't that easy to find for those wheels. It also needs a rack to carry a repair kit & wet gear.

How is Bumble Hill, they resurfaced it just after I left, love Yarramalong and Bumble Hill right back to the RZ500 days.
Pete, I have a couple of good racks in the shed, I throw most of them in the bin, take what you want I'll never use them, I'll line up a visit with the neighbour for you to look at if interested. Think they are off GPZ900 and a VFR750 and maybe a FJ1100, they are all similar to a Katana anyway.

I hadn't been out for a decent ride on the 1400 for awhile so the I took the opportunity to catch up with Snapey and check out the potential project. As we passed through Doylson I thought about a black one nearby but Snapey pushed onto Gateshead. The ride back through Yarramalong was much better even though the winter sun was low in the afternoon as we headed south west. The surface through to Kulnura is very good and the winding road through the small farms was a great change from the traffic On the M1.
The biggest downer about riding these days is the traffic and low speed limits due to road works. I did a recent trip to Gunnedah and really enjoyed the minor roads across the Liverpool plains.
But back to the red and black project. Snapey puts in some long hours and makes quick progress. He was at it early last Saturday morning - painting and polishing. We covered quite a few hundred k's that day and he was back into it that night. The red and black will be a great bike when it's finished.
Here's a pic of my 1400 in the winter sun before the ride.
I'm a bit disappointed ATM because the R/B doesn't want to talk to me.
There's spark and an error code of C00 but it appears that fuel isn't getting to the fire. I thought I had it sussed when the fuel pump wasn't going so it now has a new pump & tea bag but still no joy. One thing that comes to mind is fuel pressure because while replacing the pump I did the bypass mod but didn't fit a new inline filter. Do you think it needs that HP filter?
Another thing is a decent earth. Because of all the new paint there might be a bad earth somewhere.
Snapey, does it run with a squirt of carby cleaner/wd40 into airbox? Injector pulse can be checked with Noid light. Fuel pressure obviously with gauge but should also feel rubber hose swell slightly. I know youll sort it but these could narrow down prob.
@Snapey Is there any one near you who could come over and swop tanks to help test your bike then you'll be able to narrow down the fault to tank or elsewhere on the bike very quickly .
I've done this with our bikes and helps me to stop chasing my ass looking for a fault in the wrong place :onya:
My other bike sits three steps away Seth with 22 litres in the tank. I was going to try that tank first but it's so bloody heavy to throw around. At least by swapping tanks I'll answer the question about the HP filter.
A full tank is a bit heavy of you can put it on a stand or something then remove the small pipe to the fuel pump you can drain a fair bit of fuel easily into a container.
But not easy with a full tank.
:onya:
The stupid part is that I just put the tank back on. I was using the B/W as reference for the wiring on the R/B.
IT LIVES AGAIN
It now has the B/W tank on & it fired first press of the button so it looks like these things need that high pressure filter. No doubt not attaching the external filter was a stupid thing to do after drilling the bypass but I was anxious to hear it run.
How much shit got to the injectors only time will tell.
Great news
Your well on the way up getting it finished
:onya:
Glad its sorted. Had no doubts after seeing your work. :hat:
Good news Pete :onya:
It's getting close now. I painted the wheels & calipers today but I'll give the wheels a couple of days for the paint to harden before I fit the tyres. Once the wheels and brakes are on I can fit the exhaust & then sort the body work. There's a bit to be done to the tank but the front guard & ducktail I'm hoping to block & clear coat.
I am thoroughly impressed with your work thus far, really cant wait to see the finished product
Black wheels .... something has to change. :thumbs_down:I've ordered some red tape to hopefully do something but plain black wheels look like shit. When I was cleaning the rotors I contemplated doing them gold. I should have.
I'll leave it as is for now & get the bodywork finished & hopefully the rim tape will have arrived by then so I can see the final picture.
The rim tape will look great on that Pete ;)
I just have a thing about black Steve. The red /black don't look too bad although I prefer the graphics of the K5 over the K4 but I find the wheels & rotors add too much black. Rim tape definitely adds some colour but IMO it needs more. I'm going to try the front wheel off the B/W to see how it looks. With the candy red centres on that wheel, gold rotors & polished edges that might be the way to go but I want to see it on the bike..
I had to laugh today because I fitted a bazooka and No. 1 son came in & spotted it. His reaction was priceless. That's disgusting & what were Suzuki thinking come to mind. I tend to agree.

:)Do that Pete and call it the Wheelbarrow. You could take the seat off & use it around the house. :rofl2:
I polished the Yoshi headers today ... a bit different to how they came off.
Today
@Snapey Nice looking work. How did you polish them?

Scotch-Brite wheel to remove the road grime then the usual sisal & calico mops.
They are a real treat
@Snapey, great work. I'm guessing you use a compound with the Sisal & Calico?

This is the Scotch-Brite wheel I find invaluable for most jobs. https://www.3m.com.au/3M/en_AU/company-au/all-3m-products/~/Scotch-Brite-Light-Deburring-Wheel/?N=5002385+3293241551+4294942426&preselect=3293786499+3293952831&rt=rud
I do have others of different shapes, sizes & grades but the fine one does most of the work. Not cheap especially if you have to buy three.
For buffing on the sisal wheel I use grey for stainless & brown on aluminium & the calico wheel it's green for stainless & white for aluminium.
A job well done Snapey, I always liked the red/blacks but I was never observant enough to realise that there
were two red/black colour schemes. Gold wheels would probably look nice but Black wheels with some GSX rim stickers are
a probably a whole lot easier to look after. I've put a spare pair of black rims on my SE with rim stickers and they are much more
forgiving if you would rather ride than clean.
looks really nice fella well done - I did mine in a similar way just use Harpic Max and a scuff pad to keep on top of them now
Keep up the good work
Del
I don't want them so they're advertised in the Aussie for sale section.
The bike is finally finished but I still don't know what to do with it.
One thing that does look better are the wheels.
Lovely Pete, put 10 grand on it & see what happens?
The wheels are still black as far as I can tell :whatever: :whatever: :whatever:

I only said it looked better ... not good. Actually it still looks like shit. :onya: ;)
Snapey, what wheel colour is your preferred?
Nice mate. Need a couple of full view finished photos, maybe even before & afters.
I thought you were going to keep that and sell the B&W ?

Colour matched blue or red with polished rims. I'm still partial to full white (no polish)

I figured it would be easier to sell the one with 79,000 instead of 200,000 although I'll probably keep both.
That's Boothy's bike with the standard pipe put back on.
It's come up bloody nice Pete :onya: :clapping:

From a distance Steve. The 2 pack top coat doesn't like being sprayed outside in 14 degrees. The paint I got was also a one to one & was going off in the gun even at that temperature. It will be fixed though. ;)
Sure looks good in pics and i dont even like the red ones. Top bike.
MAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTTEEEEEEEEEEEEEE that looks really really good you have put in a great effort. Well done. :clapping: :clapping: :clapping: :clapping: :1400spray:

Strewth cobber that's some mileage
Made me think ,who on here has a 14 with the least mileage
Notty.
She'll be getting worn out mate, best ya trade her in on something with a few less miles on it :whistling: :happy1:
