Hello all. I'm Jim. This is my 3rd GSX1400. It seemed to be a good one having only done 17k. It's been faultless for 1000 miles of my ownership. Went over some bumpy roads today and coming into Laxey it lost power and cut out.
No other symptoms. It would start but not hold a steady idle then cut out.
And wouldn't rev cleanly if it did run. I did notice a tick/crack from under the tank when the starter was pressed. Is it possible that an ht coil lead or similar has come loose I didn't think of it at the time. I thought it was the infamous filter. But with no symptoms prior I'm now thinking not.
Apologies for not doing a proper intro. But in a bit of a muddle over here. Any help appreciated. Thanks. Jim.

Hooli

Morning, does it start & run with a handful of throttle?

My first guess is the jolt from the bump has made a weak vacuum pipe to the MAP fail. That's the four that come off the throttle bodies & a fifth that does to the PAIRs (if still fitted) and up to the MAP sensor between the frame rails under the middle of the tank.

I'm know you're a bit busy, but people prefer an intro post in the Bar section too.

Yeh apologies. It's 9.30pm here. Wasn't sure of the forum protocol.
I've left the bike in Laxey and am walking the 7 miles back to Douglas.
It would start and rough idle then cut out.
If I did get it to rev it would rev like it had bad fuel with a stutter. Then cut out.
I'm going to go back to the bike in the morning and have a look. But being away from home my tools are limited. Thank u for ur reply.
Are u saying hose my have come loose?

Hooli

They are 3.2mm hose & it's getting common they split & fall apart with age. Normally if it's that the bike will run at higher revs because the ECU doesn't use the MAP reading on high throttle or higher revs (I can't remember how high sorry).

Jimbo1968

Ok. I'll have look tomorrow but this one won't rev at all when I tried it just cut out.
I'll have a look under the tank tomorrow to see if anything is loose. But I don't think I have sockets to lift the tank. We will see

I'm wondering if its a blocked fuel filter - but am thinking it might well be the Pressure Regulator clip inside the petrol tank that has failed.

@Jimbo1968 - if you can get the tank off, turn it upside down, take out the fuel pump and check the plastic clip hasn't failed. If it has, its an easy fix with some thin wire or a thin zip tie to clip it back in place. I'm just thinking that maybe the bumpy roads may have caused it to fail, and certainly the symptoms fit with what you are describing.

One other thing - when I was unfortunate enough to break down years ago at the TT, the locals / local garages were more than happy to help out - don't be shy of asking, the Manx people are some of the best for their generosity and kindness, especially for those at the TT.

Good luck
Nothing to do.............all day to do it....I love retirement

My initial thoughts were fuel filter also, bumpy roads dislodging some grud & blocking fuel flow.  He did say it sounded like bad fuel, so could be a blocked fuel line / filter.  Check that teabag . . .
😎  Always looking for the next corner.  😎

Thank u for the replies. I'll catch the tram back to Laxey today and have another look at the bike. I'm limited with tools tho as I say.
If I can't sort it. I'll ring bemoto and explain that I need someone to try and repair it. Not just recover it.
I'll see if any garages are open if not.
The bike was faultless prior and had shown no signs at all of any issue. So fingers crossed.
Thanks again. Jim.
Just to add there are no warning light issues, cheers.

When you get back to the bike give it try to see if it will start and run correctly when cold.  Will help eliminate a couple of things.
Keep the rubber side down.          Mick

Went back this morning. Fires up with the fast idle turned.
Then will only run when the throttle is blipped.
So, I think it points to the fuel filter being blocked?
What do people think?

Hooli

I still think vacuum pipes as a first check, but either way you need the tank off to check further.

seth

As hooli says check the wasy stuff first and work through it if you need to take the fuelpump out you'll jot spill petrol everywhere if you have ½tank or less .
A can of spray carb cleaner will clean the teabag and hp filter .
only a slightly modified gsx1400
oh and a standard one too

Thanks to all again.
I am getting the bike recovered tomorrow and taken to a garage here in Douglas. I will update when I know more. Thanks again. 👍

Right garage rang. The infamous white clip that holds the pump hadn't failed. But the bumpy road had caused it to dislodge. Garage said it's all fine.
At least I know how to resolve it if it happens again. And I will wrap wire around it to strengthen it.

Good result, although unfortunate. A pretty simple job to do even in the field, two different size hex keys and a screwdriver to undo fuel hose clips possibly & job done. A bit of Stainless Wire or a Stainless type cable tie will close it out though
