Just got rego renewal, nearly 600 bucks. Thinking of going single seat, a fair old saving, Wife really never on back these days. Remove foot pegs, then they want a max 500mm seat. How to do on 14 without looking totally stupid? Id rather keep paying than looking wrong. Ideas??

A few of mine are single seat rego.

My 14 has a black single seat cowl, some folk don't bother, if you nit-pic neither are totally legit ways but cops never seem fussed about it.  I don't run a bike with a full dual seat with single seat rego personally but others do.

I was told single seat cowls aren't 100% legit single seat compliance, and it's questionable if they suit a retro style bike. Either way, that's what I did, never had a drama, and get much cheaper rego on 4 bikes.

So Tony. youre saying just take footpegs off? Where do i get a seat cover like you have?

Yeah, I just removed the rear pegs and fitted the cowl. I think mine came from Powerbronze in the UK.

The old single seat rego used to be an inspection and tag on the frame with a payment fee.

When this changed to the new self certified / sign the form for free version I knew it was coming in so waited. The very first day the system changed I was outside the doors before opening time, first in the queue. Probably the first in Qld to use the new system.  The poor girl behind the counter hadn't got a clue, she came out to see the Hayabusa (didn't need to) and I had to explain to her what she was looking for!

I can't remember the price of the cowl, I don't think it was cheap, but the saving in rego has paid it several times over.

My seat a custom so buying cowl difficult. My mirrors illegal, my muffler illegal, might as well just take pegs off, leave seat illegal. Reckon i can live with that.

I've seen a few folk do that. Never heard of anyone having a drama. I think it'd only be an issue if you had an accident with a pillion, or got stopped by a real pedantic grumpy cop. It's not something I've ever seen folk ticketed for.

I'm in the process of doing the same getting rego for single seat going to leave the seat and I just made my own brackets to replace the rear foot pegs,
I bought the bike from Vic and live in NSW so will have to get Blue slip for NSW Rego, hopefully all good.

@grog I'm sure your local motorcycle mechanic does the paperwork. My GSX has been single seat rego for many years. I removed rear pegs it was the only thing my guy was interested in. Savings of dollars over the years is considerable.

I have taken a pillion a few times over the years, I just refitted footpegs for the occasion. Then whipped them off it's very easy, I reckon 2 minutes max.  :onya: :onya:

It's one simple form at the Department of Transport. They stopped the old system where it was independently inspected. You fill in a simple form, sign to say it's been done, no fee, and normally no inspection.

I do mine when the rego's due but if you have a heap left to run you can claim money back from the CTP supplier.

Head to a DoT and grab the Change of Vehicle Particulars form.

It's self assessment.
