I jumped the gun on the battery. Seams I was running a total loss system.
I charged the battery overnight and it came up fine and even passed the headlight on for 3 min test.
Checked gen output, 80v on each of the 3 wires.
Reg/rec the problem. Actually on the feel test it was really hot.
What are the Chinese ones like from Ebay? I haven't rung the dealer yet for a genuine price.
On Ebay only one for a 1400, but a few for the XVS1100 and found this one

Barmy thanks for that, but none are in Oz.
I bought one from the link I posted. It's in Brisbane and will be here tomorrow.
As far as my question what are the Chinese Ebay ones like, well I'll see.

KiwiCol

why can't we use a Lithium battery Grog?  Pretty sure I've read some guys have them fitted.

Very good Col. Read the lot.  :clapping:

SFC1000

This is a bit wordy, but gives a cheap and easy replacement for the factory unit and who knows they may come out of the same factory that produces units for all bikes and outboards.
Ebay regulator rectifier fitted. It works fine, charges into the 14V range from about 3,000 revs, no specifics here, I watched the tach and read the multimeter. I'll see how this one lasts.
I went for a ride and felt the unit, it was quite warm to touch, but I have only felt the one I took of and it was similar.
The original one worked cold, but after a ride and it warmed up it stopped working.
By the way the Maroochydore Suzuki dealer wants $150 for a factory one and $60 to $100 for an aftermarket one (same ones as Ebay).
He said bring in your old one and we will find one that looks similar.
I had a marine shop check my old one just to be sure as my multimeter doesn't go into the test range on diode test. He has better equipment and smarts than the dealers around here.
He said it looks like a Yamaha marine one and also said regardless of outside shape they are all the same internally.
If you look in the application guides in the ads they all list various bikes they fit. The more common ones across all ads are XVS1100, YZFR6, Z1000, DL1000 and some even GSX1400, but not on the US sites obviously.
I probably would be happier with the larger style like the factory one.
It may have heavier internals or just the larger heat sink area.
Interchange guide below, it could be more extensive. GSX1400 part number at the bottom.

SFC, been checking this stuff out. I want Lithium battery next. Some say a MOFSET regulator required, not as cheap as yours, $300.  Charge rate needs to be 14 or below for them. So then i read, battery lithium with Battery Monitor System fitted, any reg works. All so confusing. Diavel i had, fitted Lithium batt, no dramas. Reckon the $249 batt with BMS is the go. Your thoughts?

@grog The more I read about lithium the more I like them and will probably go down that road myself when my batteries need replacing.
BMS in the battery is a must.
I see SSB do lithium, but no mention of BMS in their ads, though a phone call would sort this out.
Ultrabatt look to be the main choice and the UB12400MM looks to be the one to use.
If you stored a bike or needed to charge a lithium it looks like you would be up for a suitable battery charger. I read somewhere don't use a charger that has the anti sulfate option as lithium batteries don't like it.
I did come across these guys who do aircraft and bikes and make a couple of good points in the motorcycle section.
Trouble is you would have to take a second mortgage to buy their batteries.

Earth batts cost the Earth, $800 or so. Will ring SSB about BMS. Not mentioned on their site. I left Diavel 3 mths once, started no prob. Think i read that a good run will bring them straight back up. My Projecta jump pack, 1500cca, recharges in no time. 45 secs i think it says but sometimes a bit more. We have Lith charger at work, hardly gets used.

Mate fitted SSB lithium to his MT10 yesterday. Doesnt have BMS, sort of worries me. Agent for Superstart said hes sold lots, never a problem. Will see how it goes. $185, good price. Think its maybe a size smaller than 14 battery, not sure.
