So my SRAD front right disc has passed the MOT without any issue but the bobbins are very loose to the point you can hear them rattle at any constant speed up to around 50mph. The brakes themselves work absolutely fine and don't appear in the least lacking in stopping power. The noise the loose bobbins make is however very annoying. My question is would you fit a new pair of after market discs such as those below or go for a used OEM replacement? A used OEM disc is going to cost at least £60 and a used pair of discs well over £100 with no guarantee of performance🤔 I'm on a budget here but obviously want to remain safe. Any advice much appreciated.

I have no problem with aftermarket discs. Would  not trust used even if 50% of the  cost of new.

Ive found  metalgear here in oz to be great, surely there's  similar  Aftermarket suppliers in the  uk?
I try to take one day at a time, however sometimes several days catch up with me at once.

If you are going to fit aftermarket, I would suggest you use a well known name - EBC discs are very good and reasonably priced and give same if not slightly improved performance over standard
Nothing to do.............all day to do it....I love retirement

I fitted the cheapest discs I could find on ebay years ago & they work ok. I think they were 'Zone', a make I've never heard of.

Phil, get new. I wouldnt get used.  Metal Gear work A1. Around $400 pair in Oz.Always cheaper stuff  in UK than us. New rotors and pads such a nice feel.

I'm sure I've seen somewhere that'd replace the bobbins (it's actually a spring washer in there that fails) but I can't recall any details & probably isn't much cheaper than new discs.

You can adjust the tightness of the discs by flattening the washer with a socket that fits over the bobbins  and giving them a tap, conversely you can turn non floaters into full floaters by going the other way and tapping the bobbin with a socket on the other side to create a cup effect in the washer , have done this procedure to numerous discs ( for racing purposes only of course)

Pretty sure I bought some wavey front discs off the same company.. Been fine for me for the  last 8,000 ish miles,,

Hi Phil.

I still have the brand new wavy discs made by M factory - Black centre.  I think I mentioned them to you  before.  I you PM me I could send you pictures and dimensions to make sure they will fit.

They are surplus to requirements (the seller sent the wrong ones and rather than send them back told me to keep them!!!  I did have to pay some import VAT charges of around 50 quid I think!  I have the same but correct disc fitted to my GSX750F 2000 Front end fitted to my GT 380.  They have been fine and work well.  They owe me very little and if it helps keep you on the road you are welcome to them for the cost of getting them to you.  That wouldn't be too much as I live fairly local :)

I have a 2003 GSX1400 owned since new (Blue and White of course).  I have a 1977 Suzuki GT380 café racer and A Japanese import Yamaha XG250 Tricker.  I'm interested in anything mechanical.  Was an aircraft technician / inspector, but I took early retirement - because I could!

Hi Chip,
Really sorry I did not get back to you but I got really busy with work.Thank you ever so much for your kind offer but I decided to go down the route of a pair of new EBC discs. It finally dawned on me how stupid I was even thinking of cutting corners on brakes when the bike is going to end up doing some track days. So this weekend I fitted the discs and now have a completely overalled braking system with sintered EBC Double H brake pads, braided lines and fully refurbished calipers.

Again, thanks ever so much for your kindness and please forgive the late reply.

Regards
Phil

A good choice of braking power there Phil, and the bike looks great :onya:

Looking sharp there Phil they should stop it nicely, couldn't get an EBC rear disc here when l wanted one.
Another great day on the right side of the grass.😎

Thanks for the comments guys much appreciated. The bike really is being loved again. So far this is what I have sorted after 10 years of sitting neglected in my garage:

In no particular order:
New iridium spark plugs
New oil and oil filter
New air filter
Fully stripped and refurbished forks
Fully stripped and refurbished brake calipers front and rear
New double H sintered EBC brake pads front and rear
New front HBC discs
New braided race type break lines front and rear
New fuel pump
Petrol tank flushed and removed of God knows what of debris and stinking old petrol
Titanium fork pinch bolts, caliper bolts and yet to be fitted front disc retaining bolts
New battery
Rear hugger fitted (probably needs painting black) white one was a bargain that was too cheap to miss.
Used replacement fairings off eBay, no cracks and in very sound condition, decals not the best but okay.
Cooling system flushed (several times) and antifreeze replaced.
Rear wheel bearings replaced.
New indicators.
MOT on February 27th 2021 passed with no advisories

Probably spent the best part of £750 or perhaps more😳 Will still probably have to replace the front and rear sprockets and drive chain along with front and rear tyres.

Had a couple of short runs out on the bike and as it stands : WOW😍 The bike is awesome, breaking (stopping power) performance is superb and the bike is way faster then I remember. Very Very Happy😍😍😍😍🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗💋

Regards
Phil
