Hi all
Just purchased a 2002 k2 model, been stood outside under a cover for at least two years, what do i need to do before attempting to start?
Ordered a new battery and oil and filter, any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Wingnut,
I have just successfully started my 1999 GSXR750 that has been stood idle in my garage for 7 years. This is what I did:

1)Removed the tank and drained it of the petrol. This petrol had left a varnish like covering over the fuel pump  (caused by the ethanol additive going off over time). I then flushed it out with hot water and a few dish washer tablets to give it a good clean. If the petrol in your bike hasn't gone off (it smells like shit if it has) you maybe okay to just drain and renew.

2) Removed the spark plugs and added a table spoon of engine oil into each cylinder. Left it to soak for one week so it should of flowed down past the piston rings and lubricated the cylinders.

3) Fitted a new fully charged battery and turned the engine over without the spark plugs fitted to loosen up the engine as such. Not fitting the spark plugs at this point prevents them oiling up and also keeps the load on the battery and starter motor to a minimum i.e. low compression without the plugs.

4) Refitted the now cleaned up spark plugs and the petrol tank. Added fuel and she started pretty much first time. I did nothing else than checked she would start a few times.

5) Once I get through some other issues with the bike I will now strip and rebuild the brakes, change all the fluids (engine oil, coolant, brake, clutch and fork oil) and ensure the chain is cleaned and oiled. Probably add new tyres as well. At that point I will take her for a first run and get an MOT.

Your bike may well be in a better state than my old SRAD but I would certainly not try to start the engine until you put some oil in the cylinders and let it soak. Having said that I know people who have started bikes by just adding a new battery after they have been left idle for a long period without doing anything else at all, including using the fuel left in it.

Good luck mate

I'd bet it'd just start if you hit the button with a good battery.

Having said that, I'd pop the plugs out & spin it over to get the oil circulating. Then put the plugs back & start it if the fuel in the tank smells about right.

Thanks for all the advice everyone
