I was in CMC motorcycles (used to be south wales superbikes) in Newport and they had a K3 in for sale, £5600.  Salesman tells me the bike is a low mileage (26000 miles) bike that's fully standard apart from seat (two tone), bar ends and grips.  So I said not true, wheels should be white not black, engine covers and forks have been painted and the indicators are non standard.  Front brake lever was also new and an aftermarket type so I suspect its had a falling over which explains the new bar ends and grips.  Overall the bike looked clean but definitely non standard.  Prices seem to be rising quickly, two years ago fleabay had plenty of £2k bikes but now there's non.

Salesmen talk bollocks. One in my local bike shop has been there about 20 years & doesn't even ride bikes!

Who'd buy a bike with 26k on though? that's nearly worn out  :whistling:

Wow, at today's exchange rate that's over AUD$10,200.

Good if we have them, bad if we want them.

If you look like your passport photo then you're too sick to travel.

Our bikes are still popular as there is no current replacement from any manufacturer.
But I'd be worried buying an older 14 with a very low mileage as sitting without use is probably worse than doing high mileages with regular maintainance .
A bike at several thousands of pounds more than new price would need to be totally mint and completely standard .
And then your still looking at new tyres and a battery and a full srrvice as a minimum .
Other than that I think any mods are only worth it if someone wants them and if not actually detract from the asking price .
A good gsx1400 with a reasonable mileage is to me worth between £3000 and £4500 if really good.
only a slightly modified gsx1400
oh and a standard one too

Bikes as you described Seth are still being offered down here in Australia for low $6,000 to high $7,000. I'd call the used market down here "5,6,7" (thousand dollars) I picked mine up for less than that but it needed a LOT of cosmetic restoration and new tyres but was mechanically ok.

I'd say for the ideal great condition low kms bike you'd be looking at 7-8k but it's rare to see a bike for sake at 8-9k or higher. It'd have to be brand new with zero kms to be worth 9,10 or above.

Having said that there a few 6-7k bikes that haven't sold for ages. I was looking at them when searching for mine and they're still for sale.

At all those prices though these bikes represent astonishing value considering what people are getting for $10-20k these days.

Cut those numbers in half for British pounds.

I paid lots for mine, 10 yrs ago. Totally been worth it. It was supposedly perfect, it was. Suspension settings were off and all the other 14 settings. TPS etc. Fully serviced by dealer, just shows what they do/know. Setting all that stuff, just time not dollars. I bought without seeing, online. Many phone calls, i threatened seller, if not as you say, youre dead. Was exactly as described. Think i looked at it for a few days b4 riding, now would never sell unless forced to. Just part of my life. As for their selling price, really not caring. Seems double in UK.

I don't really care about prices as I'd never sell mine (who'd buy it anyway?) & it doesn't need replacing.

The only time it matters to me is if I breakdown abroad as most breakdown covers include saying they won't recover if it'd cost more to recover it than the bike is worth.

Whilst prices are holding, the 14 will never be a classic in the way that bikes the GT750, CB750 and z900's were. They are a solid every day bike, easy to maintain etc, but there are other options out there like the CB1300 and XJ1300 which realistically are as good.

People who expect £7K or £8K for theirs in standard form are just living in a dream world. Realistically they are holding and selling in the UK about the £2.5-£5K mark (depending on mileage and condition), and I have no doubt they will continue to do so for some years, but whatever one may like to think, they will never be a classic or sought after in the same way as machines of the 70's and 80's.

I actually think the muscle bikes have an era in time as do the 1970's classics and will become classics in their own right in the next 10 years or so. I know the CB1300's and XJR1300's are of the same ilk and are selling for less but for good reason. Why are the Z900's fetching twice the amount of GT750's and CB750's? It's because they are the best of a small group of great bikes, that's exactly what we have with GSX1400's the best of a small group of great bikes. That's why they will always get top dollar and will continue to increase in value and mint ones in the UK are much sort after now as few are available so £7k and upwards is their value. Most of those on offer at less than £5k might look good in photos but go have a look in person and you will see they are tired and neglected and many far from standard. I didn't buy my bike to make money in fact I knew it would be a money pit buying accessories and pampering her like a baby. The top standard bikes will therefore in my opinion always sell as their is always a guy (call me stupid perhaps) like me wanting a mint GSX14 to keep and ride as a hobby and aren't too concerned with price.

Probably just me Dave, I'm easily upset.

@gsxbarmy you leaving here is the very last thing anyone needs .
Our views on these bikes becoming mega classics is mainly swayed by the fact the folk here can't see past them .
I think there will always be a strong following but a true classic let's wait another 5-10 years and see then .
Others that people know are (mostly 70's bikes with a few more modern ones) were the best bikes you could buy when they were new .
I love my gsx1400's as you all know but I'd be the first to admit it was far from the best bike when it came out (it was a leader in its class) but it's the best bike for my and what I need .
Keep up the great work Dave and let's all agree not to get personal they are only motorbikes after all.
