Michelin Power 5

I know, I know, I know I'm opening a can of worms here.

I needed a new rear tyre (got approx 20,000 klm from my last one). So off I went and rung around Brisbane for cost of fitting a Mitchelin RS to my removed rear tyre. For my style of riding out in the country I really enjoy pushing the bike and these tyres really make it alot of fun. We all know of the great riding position the 1400 has and the Michelin tyres just complete it for me. Anyway ....

Couldn't find a supplier with a Power RS rear (180/55/17), looking at $290 fitted, so someone suggested the new Power 5. Why not. $255 installed and now just waiting for it to stop raining and scuff it up and enjoy. My front is still a Power RS (done about 7,000klm).

Thought I'll share and see if anyone else is using it.

Speaking out of turn here mate, know nothing about those tyres. Just had to comment as tread looks amazing. Never seen that type before.

I do like the look of that tread pattern.
As for great riding position I'm not so sure, maybe after you have reshaped the seat profile.

20,000km out of a back tyre ... how FFS?

Let's see. Got bike second hand with 54,000klm on her. Put a new Road 5 on her.
At 73,000klm tyre was down and out. Put a Power RS on her.
At 92,000klm tyre was down and out. Put the Power 5 on her.
How do I know, I've got a sickness. I've documented the tyres/work carried out on the bike.
Getting the distance from the tyres, I don't think it's rocket science. I statically balance them myself; my suspension is serviced regularly; I keep the pressures up in the tyre; christ I've lost wieght, I don't know. It is what it is.

I'm with Snapey. Previous Angel Gt was 9400 kms. Will be interesting to see what I get out of my current PR5.

Tyres sure have come a long way, back in 1989 when I got the 851 there was only 1 Tyre available in 180 whatever Pirelli something that would be toast in less than 3k and 1 seem to remember they were $500 ish but don't remember if that was for just a rear, or a pair, combining the cost of Tyres and factory servicing we worked out it was cheaper to get a taxi than ride anywhere, hence learning to do 8 valve shimming

These days I ride to the speed limit and I'm very easy on the throttle so I expect to get better mileage from tyres these days than 10 years ago. I don't but that might be my choice of tyre. It's obvious that Angel GT's don't fare well in the mileage stakes compared to Michelin PR2's so I'll be interested to see how the Power RS goes. I think I'll go back to the PR2's but I'm also interested in what you guys get out of PR5's.

In the almost 200,000kms the bike has done I found the PR2's best being 13470kms (av 12600km/9 tyres). Best Angel GT was 10555kms (av 9300km/4 tyres).

On Sweaty's recommendation I tried a set of Bridgestone 023's (5648km) but 3630kms from a Pirelli Supercorsa Pro was the greatest waste of money.

All these figures are rear tyres only in 180/55, 190/55 and 190/50.

PR4's are so much better in the wet.


Id have but 5s on when I did my rear tyre but I had a new front 4 already and was advised by a couple of places NOT to mix 4s and 5s on the bike as two quite different tyre profiles leading to instability issues.

That certainly explains some things then...

When I bought my 14, it had a PR4 on the front and a PR5 on the back.  Whilst it is not bad handling, in the wet , the front is not confidence inspiring what so ever and feels overly light in the front like it could just slip out from underneath me at anytime when cornering.  That said - the rear feels planted.  In the dry, the bike was tipping left and right all the time when riding in a straight line.  I did a wheel alignment on the bike and check all the suspension as well as re-aligned the front fork triple clamps which seemed to fix most of the issue, but it seems to come back every now and then.  But even in the dry, the front end never felt planted at all.  It's never lost traction, but has never been confidence inspiring either. 

Looks like I'll just put up with it until replacement time comes.  But I intend to try the new Metzeller Roadtec 01 SE.

Had the previous Roadtec01's front and rear on the VFR and they were awesome.  Rear last 10,000 klms and that is hard riding through the Oxley each weekend and also two-up all the time as well.

That was a really shit recommendation that Sweaty gave you Pete 
I recommended them after taking the original tyres that came with the bike off, which were like wood. So the 023's felt like moto go tyres at the time 
I would never have a set again, now that I have had Angel Gt's & now the PR5 which feel even better.
