If you do then this might be of interest to you, don't know if it will affect bikes but you all know about insurance companies and their willingness not to pay out.

They're worse than highway robbers. They'll try anything to get out of paying a claim :furious: :furious:
Assumption is the mother of all fuck ups!

Sounds about right for insurance companies nowadays. I`d argue that its a temporary fixture - same as an air freshener is, for example.

Hardly a modification the the vehicle is it!

Mick_J

If they consider that a modification to the vehicle what about charging your phone in the car, uses the same power outlet  :whatever:

A fine of upto £2500 if the sat nav is deemed to have contributed towards dangerous driving? Would that be because the driver was constantly checking it whilst driving - a bit like having to constantly check your speed on a stretch of road covered by average speed cameras.

If you put the thing in a stupid place on the windscreen then you're probably a prat anyway, but this smacks of another way to get money from the motorist and for insurance companies to screw us over. Utter bollocks  :furious:

I see that as one of the many ways to make the acceptance of autonomous driving/riding palatable to the people.  :furious:

I find that idea terrifying to be honest, just hope it doesn't come in until I no longer use the roads

Andre

I find that idea disgusting. Unfortunately 80% of those 30 and under can see themselves driving in an autonomous vehicle according to some study here. I think the right to vote should be limited to those over 30 as they are less prone to being manipulated. :stir:

I`m sure that this issue has nothing to do with a sat-nav being a distraction, after all, I have a standard fitment sat-nav sticking up in the centre of my car dashboard, my other vehicle is fitted with a stick-on screen Tom Tom device which, in real terms, is mounted in exactly the same location in terms of driver vision. In addition, it is now a UK requirement that anyone taking a driving test has to be proficient in using a Sat Nav and it features as part of the driving test, (one of our daughters just passed her test and she had to follow her Sat Nav to a destination!), so it isn`t deemed a distraction for sure.

The insurance companies are paranoid that `added extras` are being used to hype claims. Thats what this is really about.

My van has a speed limiter deployed - an official Ford `extra`, and in my innocence i mentioned this to my insurance comany assuming that i would get a cheaper deal for obvious reasons. To my amazement, they increased my premium, on the basis that it was deemed as an extra! When i challenged them they told me that any extra fitment would be added cost for them to foot in order that the vehicle was re-instated to its condition before any RTA. I cancelled my insurance on the spot (which they charged me £25 admin fees for), however, i re-insured with an alternative company, didn`t mention the limiter, and saved over fifty quid!

Insurance companies are utter baaaarstards - until of course, you need to make a claim!

My sat-nav gets used once to find my destination, after that it goes back in the glove box because I know where it is now and doesn't get used until I go some where else new. On my bike no sat-nav if I go north I know to get back home I go south until I recognise something familiar, I used to be a motorcycle courier back in the nineties, all we had was map books, you looked it up , committed it to memory and off you went. :riding: :wheelie:

Batkwaka

My K1600 has a Satnav as an option so it would bypass the modification issue but contributing to an incident could be interesting as I assume they mean looking away from the road. Again not an issue with the K1600 but one wonders if their grubby insurer would try it on anyway.
May the sun be warm & shining and your roads be smooth & winding.

Tally, i agree.I just have a look before leaving. If i get lost, have another look. Refidex, old street map book, gets more use than digital maps.

What's interesting is that when you get a quote from some insurance companies, they ask if you have a Sat Nav - on the basis it makes safer driving
Nothing to do.............all day to do it....I love retirement
