Hi there im new to the group having just bought a 2001 gsx1400, im a mechanic/garage owner. Iv replaced the regulator/rectifier and stator however im still only getting 13.1 volts on idle and 12.6 volts when up pick the revs up. any ideas ?

Gidday Morgsv8, welcome to the forum.
Now, the charging, usually you'll get 14.3v at idle & dropping to around 13.6 - 13.8v with a few revs on. Your's is a bit below that, so how's the battery?  Going from what you've already done, I'm picking it's new too. Yeah?  If so, I reckon the bike is only putting out what the new battery needs.

2p from down under!

We like intros then well talk/solve your problem. Not harsh, just how it is.

If you changed the stator and reg/rec then the only other thing that could be a problem can be your battery .
If the other parts were replaced with new parts were they faulty ?
If they were then the battery could well be damaged .
It's also worth checking the replacement parts are working correctly just in case.
As @grog said it's handy for you to introduce yourself and also say where your at as then then other nearby members might be able to help you .
I have spare parts that could be used to help if your near me.
only a slightly modified gsx1400
oh and a standard one too

As others have suggested, an intro would be welcomed thank you http://gsx1400owners.org/forum/index.php?board=20.0

I agree with the others, regarding the battery and whether the replacement parts fitted are working correctly. If it's not the battery, I'd maybe consider testing that the new reg/rec is working correctly. I'd al so check your earthing points are clean, the neutral to frame lead can sometimes get a bit corroded.

I'm assuming you've seen these "technical" threads which may assist:

Just a question, where do we check voltage straight from generator, wires out i mean, not at battery. On a car can check volts at battery but also at alternator power wire. Might be a stupid question but i dont know. That takes battery out of equasion. Volts at battery can be wrong, sulphated, shorted internal etc.

Morgsv8

Sorry for the no intro, this is my first 14 and will be using it insted of my r1200gs for trips aboard with the lads, iv been riding bike and a mechanic for over 25 years and im in not so sunny torquay devon uk,
its also a brand new battery and all the earths are good iv also tested the new parts to make sure and they are working as the should, however the startmotor is now lazy when warm so having that reconditioned today

Unplug the multiplug under the plastic cover by the clutch slave. I believe you should get about 60v AC between any two yellow wires.

60 is minimum. I got about 90 Volts at 5000 rpm

Done voltage drop testing between stator/rectifier and regulator/battery?

Morgsv8

Starter motor will be back in tomorrow so I can do more testing and will post videos of what it doing

Morgsv8

Right then starter all good now, I got 80v from the stator at 5000 rpm and 20v at tick over

Hooli

From memory that sounds about right, but I'd need to check the manual to be sure.

Morgsv8

So the small earth wire from the battery although tested for continuity all ok, it was broken all but 2 strands so replaced and working as it should now, thank you for your help guys

grog

Great result mate. Can remember someone else said an extra earth to motor a good idea. On my list but just havent got there.
