G,day
Did a search and can't quite seem to find the answer , apologies if it's staring at me, was wondering if anyone has an insight into the failure mechanism of the leaking oil cooler. From what i can glean it splits at the flange if it's going to , is the general consensus that the vibration from a less supported cooler fatigues the joint and it cracks, my bikes done 55000 ks and am trying to do a bit of preventative work, am wondering if supporting the hoses and or cooler a bit differently might get some extra life out of the cooler . The rubbers that mount the cooler seem to be pretty loose and you can lift the cooler a few millimetres.

Any thoughts appreciated,

my oil cooler failed at the right union flange .
But mine was caused by fitting aftermarket hoses that were much heavier and had a very slight leak (a drop every once in a while)
It finally failed when I tried to tighten it and stop the leak once to often .
I took it to serval places in Germany (where it failed) and back in the uk(scotland) and was told it's to fragile to repair.
A brand new standard cooler was fitted with no problems.
I think the best thing is just clean them and leave well alone .
Emma's bike has just passed 55555 miles last week the cooler is as good as new .

oh and a standard one too

Thanks for the info Seth seems like a bit of a lottery if they fail or not ???

Mine looked like this after removing because it leaked,no wonder the o-ring didn't seal properly.

Seems to me a good assessment.

@Villiam3rd
That looks like the hose .
Can you get a new one or have that repaired in your part of the world.
Good luck to you

@seth No, that is the cooler and new one is on the way.

That'll be why it leaked then I've not seen that before they normally split where the cooler meets the journal when then do go.
Not great having to buy a new cooler but that was never going to be repairable

Most coolers I've seen fail go on the LH bottom corner (as you sit on the bike) and crack in the 'accordion' style end tanks.

I doubt you can do much about it really. I think the oil flow goes in on the LH side so that corner suffers the most thermal changes, hence it expands & contracts more leading to failure.

I fitted a different design replacement after my 2nd cooler failed & had no more issues since.

Thanks for the reply's, after all that I believe the design is substandard and the combination of loading ,vibration and thermal stress will be the cause. The only variable that I would have much control over is the loading so I might have a play with the hoses ( which seem overkill for the duty) and see if I can unload the cooler a bit. Probably will have no effect but will make me think I have had a go. Will also either replace or bush up the mounting rubbers and then it will probably fail soon thereafter,
Have a good one,
