Someone I know bought herself her first big bike but not having passed her test yet coundnt ride it. So we took it out to check it's ok, obviously as it's got knobblies I turned up a byway. My first time ever on mud with a bike...

It's got an issue where the fast idle seems to cut in at random or it stalls at idle unless it's got hot. It'll stall having ridden normally for an hour, but behaves after ten mins at low speed in a car park. I'm going to start by checking the temp sensors to solve it

It's a fun little thumper and stupidly easy to ride.

Since owning my first BMW, I read that some models suffer from hot start issues.its apparently related to the battery and the shunt that's fitted to it. Battery overheats and puts out erratic currents, this messes up the ecu and fuelling.  The PO has fitted an Odyssey battery that solves the issue.

Thanks, I don't think it's that though as it plays up cold then works when hot.

What it seems like to me is it's over rich & fouling the plug when ridden normally & sometimes the 'choke' is cutting in. Let it idle or when she was riding around a car park in 1st/2nd for 25mins & it was absolutely fine. Ride off down the road & it's doing it again a mile later. All tends to say to me the ECU thinks it's cold/getting really cold at times. I've managed to download an official workshop manual for it, so will be checking sensor outputs starting with the temp sensor.

It's also seemingly not been serviced in forever as the brake fluid is awful & the ABS light doesn't work. That's getting done too. She wants to learn to fix her own bikes, so she'll be doing it with me going 'oh you don't wanna do it like that...' in a Harry Enfield voice.

Hooli - sounds like the bike`s been neglected, which is probably the root of the problem. On that basis i`d go for checking (and more) all the simple stuff first, ie. sticking cables; fuelling parts; filters; basic electrics etc. etc. You could strike lucky fairly quickly. When we have a problem with our bikes its easy to overlook what happened at the time of the problem appearing, so it may be a good idea to contact the previous owner.......?

Hooli

Yeah I've checked cables etc already & know it needs a good service, I have a feeling that won't fix it though.

In other news, I've got the tank back for my 14. I'll check it fits later & take some pics of the patch welded in underneath and stuff for ya all.

Yesterday after checking the tank fitted I painted the welded plate underneath with black hammerite, it needed protection and as you can't see it using a slower colour didn't matter.

Well the tank is on & after a lot of faffing about the clocks are too. Turns out I hadn't got the metal bracket quite the right shape & it looks hours of faffing to get it roughly right. They aren't perfectly positioned but I was too bored to keep fighting it.

Oh & that glue isn't as good as it seems, everytime I tried to put the chrome back on the clocks the bosses the screws go into broke off. As did the mushroom post on the back when I had to take the bracket off. I managed to find some longer wood screws that gripped the remains of the bosses though & you can't see them when it's fitted so that's good enough.

Turns out I didn't have any bolts long enough to mount the headlight bowl as the originals bent in the crash. So I'll go get some tomorrow & finish putting it together. Then tip a gallon of petrol in to see if it runs & probably a test run to a MOT station. After also fitting the new mirrors of course.

Have some have half complete pics.

Weve had so much rain, dont like riding in it, too much cleaning after is main reason. Today risked the forecast, only 50ks but shes going perfectly. Totally enjoyed, they sure feel good after a month lay off. Im sure ihe power of them increases with downtime.

MOT passed  :boogie:
She's back on the road at last. I think I'll have to have a fiddle to get the clocks straighter at some point, it's more annoying than I thought with them slightly out of line. I think I can sort it by extending the holes in the bracket & using a washer or two as I can't straighten the bracket correctly. But for now she's out & about, riding better than ever with the correct rear shocks rather than the fake XgayR Ohlins she'd had since I got her.

I try to take one day at a time, however sometimes several days catch up with me at once.
