Quote from: GSXKING on Friday, 12 September  2025, 05:37 AMThat's awesome that you've owned so many, that may be a record.

Mine is a short GSX1400 list.
2001 plated purchased 10/10/2001 so 24 years of ownership next month. Roughly 180,000 kms travelled (Speedo stopped at 172,000).

I have had a plethora of other bikes in that time from Aprilias to HD and a few other Suzukis. Bought my first BMW R1200RT in 2007, now on a 2015 RT with 200,000 kms of untroubled travel. My wife prefers it to the GSX.
Very envious of the miles you have covered, I was going to say I never seem to have the time but that's a bad excuse really and the story of my life. I made work my main hobby sadly & still no better off than some who have never worked but drained the UK benefit system, slightly less work now but has taken me 56 years to realise that there is more to life

Quote from: Eric GSX1400K3 on Thursday, 11 September  2025, 11:13 PMIs there a way to check what the hall effect crank sensor picks up as the engine runs? I'm back to thinking its the crank sensor as its magnet is broken, but superglued together and you cannot tell where the split line is.
ordered new signal generator today.  Not really wanting to simply keep throwing parts at it, but seems I have no choice.

Yes, there is. Need an oscilloscope. Just an example: https://automotiveamerican.com/2024/10/03/testing-a-crank-position-sensor-with-the-hantek-1008c/

I am pretty certain that the magnetic field is disturbed in your case. Not sure but it may be the issue. Either check it or a part swap.
many thanks Andre, after reading that I understand our 1402's have the AC signal type (magnetic field disturbance type, i.e sinusoidal waveform), not Hall effect, which  are digital (square waveform 1's and 0's).  Will see if I can borrow an oscilloscope, otherwise its a new CPS.

Thanks again
I try to take one day at a time, however sometimes several days catch up with me at once.

Not as jealous as I am of the European guys whom whilst riding days is not like ours, they see so much history and castles etc. Rynglieder (sorry I've forgotten your name) I love reading your epic trips. One day I'll experience it for myself.
My wife and I enjoyed Old Town in Prague and the Parthenon in Athens. But not by motorcycle 🧐

Best allrounder I've ever owned 👍

Eric, such a mongrel result, becoming expensive, time wasting, brain messing. My idea would be to,try cps, next another ecu, then if no good🤷♂️, dont know, another bike. We get old easily, move on.

Eric GSX1400K3

I hear ya Grog, wife says the same. Problem is the bike i wantvto replace it with is probably 10x the cost.  Will keep at it.

T250

I think as Grog says, CPS or ECU, there's nothing else left, has anyone near you got a 14 you could compare and swap some items with? Shame we are so far away otherwise I'd willingly use my K2 to try and get to the bottom of this  :onya:

Silly thought but have you tried running it with the tank off in a dark environment just to see if something is arcing/shorting out? Clutching at straws...

Eric GSX1400K3

Kind words @T250.  Tend to agree it can only be CKP (or CPS) or the ecu, all other sensors check out. I have spark, fuel and air, just seems spark not at the right timing.

Ordered a new aftermarket stator and magnet yesterday, 78aud delivered. The oem ones available in Oz are around 500AUD delivered, in this case webike Japan was most expensive at 478usd plus 89usd delivered, making it almost 1000aud delivered.

If I get time, I will still pull the cam cover and do a valve clearance check and double check the timing chain.

Eric, Look up Manual timing chain tensioner heading.  Teufel advises to tighten up chain by removing spring, ball etc, insert screwdiver and give it a push. One or two clicks will be gained.Thatll tell you if its too loose.

Quote from: Hooli on Thursday, 11 September  2025, 06:56 PMI prodded tracking websites & said 'hurry up' for my bits to arrive..

I might wash the tractor today as it's covered in bugs & it's a sunny day.

The prodding only half worked, the part got to 10 miles away at 2am today. But apparently that's too late to be put on a van & delivered, maybe monday...

Washing the tractor had the usual effect, I went out on it yesterday in the forecast sunny weather & got soaked three times.

Eric GSX1400K3

In the process of taking the cam cover off. Verified that the camshaft pin that activates the cam position sensor is still there, removed the spark plugs and crank position sensor so I can turn the crank easier to check valve clearances.

Will check the cam chain tensioner as well

Well yesterday was been a waste of damn time.

The sensor arrived, hurrah!
Parcel Farce tracking says it's still in the sorting office 4hrs later BUT the Japan post tracking knows it's been delivered?

The sensor doesn't appear to bloody work! it should give a closed circuit when not submerged in petrol. It does change but still giving a high resistance & isn't allowing enough current to trigger the warning light.

I put it all back together with the old sensor & found out you can get to the sensor without removing the tank which is handy but I'd needed it off for other stuff anyway. It won't idle... Tracked that one down, it's got a vacuum leak to the MAP sensor. Yup the Scottoiler that worked fine 3 1/2 years ago when I put it on the shelf has broken & was causing the issue. To prove that though I had to have the tank, airbox, rear cowl & side panel back off to get to the vacuum pipe & the oiler.

I've left it in bits & said **** it. I've ordered a new Scottoiler, there's a few second hand ones out there but they look full of sludge & are a pain to clean, plus who says they aren't about to develop a vacuum leak too? There's a 2nd hand sensor for £10 on ebay I've ordered, worth it to prove the fault if nothing else & I will return the new one once I've double checked with a working sensor. Doesn't help the only workshop manual I can find is the early carbed version & has loads of typos & errors, testing this sensor being one of them. It's obvious how it works but it's nice to double check before you complain.

One the brightside, with the proper size battery in the immobiliser works properly & doesn't ignore the key 50% of the time.

Crash bars are due to arrive today, so I'll get them fitted & finish wiring up the aux lights. At least it won't take long to put the new oiler in & throw the heap back together after that.

Oh & had to order a thermostat for the car as it's not opening properly & running rather warm.

Eric GSX1400K3

Checked when the new a.m CKP sensor is due to arrive from the US, says 10th October.

Anyway, pulled the cam cover off, included some photos below. Pretty sure it has never been off, so im amazed at how clean for a 22y.o engine.  Shows these are very well sealed up. Gasket still perfect.

Checked cams, bridges and timing chain, all perfect, no signs of damage or metal shavings in the oil galleries etc.

Did the valve clearance check as per manual, inlet spec is 0.1 to 0.2 cold, all inlets at 0.15. Exhaust spec is 0.2 to 0.3, all exhausts at 0.25, two probably a smidge tighter but I dont have a gauge between 0.2 and 0.25 so all good there.

What was weird is that the markings on the cams don't match the diagram in the manual, in that thr lines line up, but theres a little cut-out in the end of the cam that according to the manual face a certain way when the timing marks line up.  Maybe a manual diagram mix up?

Ran a torque wrench over the cam bridges, all still to spec, then buttoned it all back up.  Note that oil cooler has to drop forward to allow cam cover to clear thr timing chain and frame.

Have to wait for the CKP sensor now...

Even cleaner than mine was inside, mine had a slightly yellow finish that wiped off. My clearances had never changed in 150k miles, up til the last time I ever checked them.

Those cutouts only line up towards each other every other turn of the crank as the cams turn at half engine speed. I think the manual shows them the way you have them too, for when to do half of the valve clearances.
