I don't suppose one of the tablets you tried was a Samsung Galaxy Tab A ?

I REALLY can't afford an ipad, least of all a new one.  Even harder to justify if needs a shroud as well...

Having an ipad brings up another issue (for me) of course.
Would have to get the apps for iOS and Android, depending whether using phone or tablet at the time.
(as I have, and am sticking with, an Android phone.

This isn't really a problem for DJI Go 4 app (probably, maybe) but would be for Litchi (a paid app).

Comments I have seen on various forums do tend to indicate that DJI Go 4 app is much more stable on iOS platform than it is for Android.

i am buying an Ipad 9.7 2018 gen 6 i believe. £320 new. More money than i ever wanted to spend on a tablet but since i cant find an android one that suits i am just taking the hit and getting the ipad...

Ok I managed to find that locally.  Which particular model did you get? (32 or 128Gb / wifi only or wifi + cellular)
A base wifi only with 32Gb storage sells here for AUD $469 = £262
whereas the wifi + celluar, with 128Gb sells for AUD $799  = £476
and whether 'Apple Care' is worth another hundred bucks is anyone's guess.


I'm considering an iPAD mini as at 7.9" its the biggest that will fit the controller, and is still substantially larger screen size than my 5.7" Note 5 phone. And there's one on ebay 64Gb with wifi and 4G.  Second hand but evidently in good nick. Might go for around the $300 mark.

I have a tablet mount that slides into the remote and it sits above the remote. I should have it by the weekend.

OK i ended up with this iPad 2018 6th Gen 9.7 Inch Wi-Fi 32GB- Space Grey. No cellular as i will hotspot from my phone for maps. And if i find i need one i will purchase a Garmin GLO bluetooth GPS module but i dont think i will need it.  I dont need more than 32gig storage either.
My mount is very similar to the mavmount yes.

So after i quick test today the whole setup is floorless. No video lag at all. The drone apps i use like UAV forcast and drone assist can stay on my phone all i need on the iPad is the DJI GO 4 app. I dont and wont use Litchi, dont see the point specially considering the cost of it.

I am an avid Android fan. BUT i am glad i went down the iPad route for the drone.

Thanks. As much as I'd like that set up its probably too expensive (so I'm bidding on a ipad 3 mini.. we'll see).

With your new iPAD why would you not needd >32Gb.  My 32Gb phone is full all the bloody time so assume thats not really a lot of storage when it comes down to it?

Also can tethering give you the maps? Does it therefore need to be constantly tethered to the phone? In which case that's 2 devices going flat....?


What brand is your tablet mount, as is it a good one?

Oh and did you get a hood? If so where from?

Unless your storing thousands of music tracks how are you filling up 32 gig?!?!?! I barely scrape the surface on my phones storage. a few gig for music and a few gic for picks. I have enought space to increase my drone cache to 16gig and still have left over space.... What on earth are you doing?

The iPad will never have music on it so its entire storage will go to drone cache and images.

Havnt bothered with the hood yet as we have no sun at present but they are only 10quid off amazon or ebay.

Tethering gives maps as it gets them from internet (uses next to zero extra battery for the phone) It doesnt help with GPS position though. So it relies on the drones own GPS system which means you cant update GPS position while in flight and RTH will return to its take off point. Which isnt an issue for me.

By the way, you dont need the maps at all, the radar system works very well with out the maps.  Sure its a nice touch but by no means important.

It's $60 Aussiebucks for the one you have. So, more than your price + exchange rate. And Amazon UK won't post to Aussie we need to use their local outlet apparently (higher prices).Pricks.

and while we're at it.. what SD card (specifically) do you use? There is a lot of argument on the net as to size, speed etc but as you have some experience you may be able to shed some light on this for me.

I might fill up the phone memory as I've got the phone camera at max settings, have never bothered changing it. Probably overkill. No music on there, some audiobooks but not much. I tend NOT to use cloud storage (stupid excess data charges).

Might have to dig around to see what's taking up all the space.  Apps I suspect.

Well I bought an ipad 6 yesterday and today got a screen protector and a case for it when not in use on the drone remote. $$$ but should be future proof for quite a few years !

(edit: 4/12 bought a sunshade for it too)

Discussion on the various forums seems to point to more and more expensive SD cards...however some are significantly higher spec than the write speed of the drone so you do wonder what goes on in people's heads...

A mate has offered to lend me a 64Gb card so I'll see how that goes (whatever kind it is).

Do you film in 1080 or 4K? How many minutes of footage can you get on a 16Gb card?

I always shoot in 4k and put it this way... i have never ever run out of space on a session .... ever...
i have 4 batteries so thats 2 hours flight time there abouts.. but of coarse i dont record every second... soooooooo.. i will leave that to you to decide..

My remote battery drains quickly and I think its due to using the stock USB / charging cable which came with the ipad.
Seems perhaps the controller is charging the ipad and thus losing juice itself.

Did you need to buy a special OTG cable?

Yeah that looks just like what I need. So it actually goes to the side port on the controller, not the full size USB?
So have to unplug it from the controller whenever need to charge the remote? That sounds annoying.

Can't find anything like that locally anyway. Only ex-UK.
