my daughter and best mate just got dslr. by pure chance, both same camera. small, compact, cheap. both really happy. zoom lens. Canon EOS1300d. $500 in NZ Col.  how cheap is that. in 1980 i bought camera of the year, decided others know. AE1 Canon. served me for 25 yrs without a prob. that was 500 then. just after , mid 80s, mate was doing trip thru asia, india etc. asked me my camera reco. of course i said latest Canon. bad move. that was first eos model. turned out it was a dud, couldnt handle humidity. not one photo turned out. how was my advice, pretty crap. Canon did replace it, known fault.

Some great shots there Dave :onya:

Just out of interest, back in the 80's I was given a 1960's Asahi Pentax camera by a neighbour when he upgraded his kit. Everything on it was manual and I learned from scratch how to use it. I got some good results. Sadly the shutter jammed on it in the end and it wasn't worth repairing. It was good while it lasted though.

I think I'm a bit lazy with the Nikon and tend to use it on "Auto" a lot of the time. It gets good results but I really do need to play with settings and learn it all again.
Assumption is the mother of all fuck ups!

My brother has been a professional photographer or videographer all his life. He has seen some amazing things and some tragic things.
It is his passion and has been since l can remember. He worked on Fleet St for a while. He took the only photo of the Rainbow Warrior bomber Domanic Priure, that was used on the front of Time magazine. He like you guys has an eye for the shot. Macro is a facination of his also . He has quite a bit on UTube.
I will try to attach footage of a helicopter crash he filmed. It has 10M views. He is wearing the white hard hat yellow hi viz carrying the camera then seen climbing into the cockpit.
Sorry wont let me put it up. Search... Murray Job on UTube. For you Macro boys checkout '2 grumpy caterpillars fighting over the same leaf'
Stills on :  flickr.co/murrayjob
Another great day on the right side of the grass.😎

Steve - do indeed play with the settings, you can get so much better results. Auto really is for when you don't have time to set up for a shot and just need to take it. Also adjust ISO settings (I leave mine usually on 200 ISO to give good overall shots, but 100 ISO for bringing out colours, 400-1600 ISO for fast moving and detail shots. That's where you have to be a bit careful as the higher the ISO, the grainier the picture.
Do have a play with "S" (Shutter Priority) and "P" (Program mode) settings in particular - the following link
http://www.olympusamerica.com/crm/oneoffpages/ask_oly/crm_e_ask_oly_01_09.asp
does a good explanation of what they do. Results can be so much better esp if using "P" mode and then slowing the shutter speed down when taking water (like waterfalls) to give a different aspect. On both these below I slowed the shutter speed down in the first to bring the rainbow out more, in the second to "soften" the water speed whilst keeping some of the detail

I used to have a Minolta Dynax 7000 SLR (film) and used that for maybe 20 years, good camera.  But digital has changed everything.

I don't have the time to dedicate to photography as a hobby in itself anymore, but I do enjoy taking the occasional decent picture. My priority is portability, needs to be something I can easily carry when out hunting (usually turns into armed bushwalking) so I got a Panasonic Lumix FZ200.  Pretty good camera especially for the price. The only real thing I don't like on that camera is the lack of a true 'bulb' mode.
Graham Houghton (that's his youtube channel name) has excellent tutorials.

This is the best photography forum I have come across in Australia (and anywhere for that matter) -

I can highly recommend the Nikon D3400 DSLR....

Another feature I like playing with is "Selective Colour" You have the option to select up to 3 colours and it will pick the selected colours out in the shot. Everything else will be in black and white...

Well that is just an awesome feature, with great results!  Heaps easier than mucking about in photoshop or whatever afterwards.

@gsxbarmy where did you take the waterfall shots?
