Bike been off the road 6 months.. running a tad rough

Well I managed to get the rear wheel back into the 1400 (bastard of a job) and gave her a good wash.
Cleaned the chain with Kero and lubed it with some vmx80 (cheers @grog )


Figured that the battery would be dead and I'd have to put it on the charger... nope. Gave it the electric boot and the starter kicked in nice and strong.  :boogie: [size=78%]  [/size]

It seems to be missing, or sometimes missing, and I've no idea on how many cylinders, but its missing on less than 4... :lol:


Two possible reasons spring to mind
1. Water ingress around the plugs from when I was cleaning it (wasn't using high pressure of course)  and/or
2. Some sort of issues with the fuel having sat there 6 months. (still smells like it should)


Anyway I'm open for suggestions. I'd like to get out tomorrow and get some heat into that new rear tyre to get rid of any residual slipperiness, :)

might be worth a check of the teabag filter and then give it a top up with fresh fuel and add  a fuel system cleaner additive  then give it a good run.
only other thing is to check the spark plugs as ive had them fail after sitting for a while .

Sometimes they can seem like they miss a beat every now and then when they have sat for a few months and then fire up, as they need to reach an equilibrium of burning any condensation out of the oil, relubing the cylinders etc.

I'd give her a good run out Mike first before worrying about anything, if after a damn good thrashing she is still a little hesitant then we maybe need to look a little further. Some injector cleaner in the fuel would be useful, but only if (or when) you top up so it mixes in.

If you had a wheelbarrow-edition you could do quick check to see if one cylinder is not firing by feeling the pressure on the two exhaust ends by hand. There would be a noticeable difference. As you don't have 2 cans, get a long screwdriver, hold the screw-fitting end to the shiny parts on the head-cover, the handle to your ear. You should hear discordant noise when there is a cylinder not firing. If you hear mostly nice squishy sounds  you are ok to do as Dave suggests (go for a ride to burn of junk). If that doesn't help change to new spark plugs (do not clean spark plugs with wire brush ever!). According to maintenance schedule the plugs should be changed every 12000 km.

AND, anytime before and between the above steps (as you feel or can - the earlier the better) get rid of the old fuel! Especially when it has ethanol in it, clean the tea bag as well as the high pressure filter.

Agree with Andre here.... probably the old fuel.  Drain the tank and refill adding some injector cleaner and give it good thrashing  :onya:

Thanks... i have about 4/5 full of fuel and am reluctant to dump it, if I can help it.
After all, where can one dump fuel these days?


I did see about the tea bag etc. I was at the auto shop today too - wish Id have known to grab some carb cleaner....




I might just take her for a run tomorrow up the highway and see how it goes for a bit.

Once started and before you take a ride touch each pipe (Quickly and don't hang on) to find out which cylinder is not running.  It won't hurt unless you are an idiot  :whistling:

if you have to touch the exhaust use the back of your hand not the palm (if that gets burned/feels excessive heat it will make you hand into a fist thus gripping the exhaust ) :onya:

Dump it in a watering can (with sprinkler head attached) and feed it evenly to your lawn. More than one problem solved that way  :rofl2:

Or do it like hobos do.  After distilling the ethanol out, pour it in a bottle and share with some buddies at a drinking session around a used oil drum in which your poured the rest of the shite and throw a match in it. Have a good time :coffeescreen:
