Woman here in Aus yesterday was paying so much attention to her satnav rather than looking out the window, she drove straight into the river...

The story... (from the paper)

Car plunges into Swan River after driver's 'moment of inattention' checking GPS

A woman has escaped serious injury after her car veered off the road in Perth and plunged into the Swan River.

The car left Mounts Bay Road near Hackett Drive in the suburb of Crawley and entered the water about 5:30pm.

The driver, believed to be in her mid-50s, was able to escape from the vehicle and make it ashore.

Police said the woman had been travelling west towards the University of WA when the accident happened.

She told officers she looked at her GPS while she was driving and in "a moment of inattention" ended up in the water.

The woman appeared to be unhurt, police said.

St John's Ambulance said she was taken to Royal Perth Hospital with no obvious injuries to undergo a check-up.

The car remains partially submerged in the water five metres from the shoreline on Mounts Bay Road.

A crane has been sent to the scene to retrieve the vehicle.

Damn car ! Not the driver eh....

As an aside .. if a car crashes into the Swan River does that make it a "Swan Dive" ?!

they built a new bit of road up here  (bypassed a bad junction with trafgiclights and a narrow railway bridge)  3 cars got stuck by turning off the brand new wide loverly road to go through a very small gap in a fence to get on the old Road.
there is now a sign saying not to follow satnavs

No matter what technological advances we have, it would appear that there is still no cure for stupidity.

That was Mounts Bay Rd, many years ago a favourite haunt for bike riders as it a very twisty section of road that follows the contours of the river and the Kings Park Hill. There is no real opportunity to take your eyes off the road without changing lanes or leaving the road entirely.
May the sun be warm & shining and your roads be smooth & winding.
