Cheers Kiwi, Jenny took them so I can't take the credit. The water was low so I was hoping to see some of the village they flooded to make it - not low enough on this occasion. No Lancaster flew by either

On Wednesday afternoon a mate and I went on a gorgeous ride out.
Very atmospheric with zero traffic..
Stopped on a bridge that was originally a Roman crossing.
My mate has a degree in ancient history!
Hopefully the photos portray the tranquil feel of the ride..

Im not normally a graveyard dweller but my mate errrr is !
I did find these ancient words on a grave a touching tribute to a wifes passing...

What really struck me is how young some people died..
Especially women.. I can only assume during child birth..
Loads were just 19 to 28 years old !!

Quite a few children as well....
It certainly makes you think !

I read the inscription at the bottom of the stained glass windows.  1852 - 1854, sad.   1850's NZ was just being settled, nothing here.
😎  Always looking for the next corner.  😎

Yep photos do convey the tranquil feel for sure, good job.

You're lucky having so much history in your country.

I've got a degree in ancient history as well.  To be honest, I don't have much call on it though :)
Bronze Age Greece a particular interest of mine, but I also love the later Greek and Roman stuff.

Beautiful morning, even if I did get to the Cafe an hour before it opened! Still it was worth it for the early cool start and empty roads. 381k's (236 miles) and home by 11am. Furthest I've done on a tank thanks to the modded tank neck.

Photo taken at the top of the Rimutaka hill. I take this route into Wairarapa on pretty much every ride I take as there are only two routes out of Wellington, west or east, and the west route is just straight up & down for miles with barely any options for getting off the main drag. The eastern route however means going over this hill and down to some great motorcycling country. The video link below isn't from my ride [don't have a go pro or equivilent yet] but it it'll give you an idea of how good the hill can be on a good day  :boogie2:

Yeah its a great ride If you can judge a time when the traffic is OK as there aren't many passing places.

The sculpture is a memorial to the soldiers of WW1 who trained in the camp at Featherston [to the north] and, after completing training, marched from the camp to Wellington docks for their departure overseas [Egypt, then Gallipoli in the first years]. This 62 KM march was their 'right of passage' from training.

Back home after a thoroughly enjoyable ride out around the Wairarapa  :wheelie: :wheelie: :wheelie: :wheelie:

Great photos Gegs. Wonderful memorial.
Hope you enjoyed your ride
Another great day on the right side of the grass.😎

Got mine out for a wee tour round the Port Hills today.

Looking down Lyttelton harbour from about ½ way up from Gebbies pass side

Bit further up here, just before you go through to the Christchurch side

Through the other side here, Lake Ellesmere in the distance on left & sea beyond that.

Bit further round now, can see (a bit) of the flat expanse of the Canterbury plains

Black back home in the driveway, now it's the Blues turn -

Black n Blue - tucked up together after their runs.

TBH, I prefered the naked over the screen.  I took the black out first & jumping on the blue with the fairing etc, the buffeting & wind noise on my helmet was very noticable indeed.  Think I may ditch the screens n go back to naked for both.

Great pics Col.
My screen sits under my bench, and it looks heaps better naked as well 👍
