Hi everyone,
Just joined the form & was after some advice.
I've recently purchased a K3 model beautiful too :smitten:
I was after a gear position indicator so purchased one but this has the later K4 onwards 6 pin plug!
Can this be adapted to suit my earlier 4 pin ?
The only other makes I can find are £99 GBP !
Does anyone know of a cheaper alternative not magnet type I could purchase
anywhere ?

Hi Sparky - what make gear position indicator did you purchase? I haven't heard of this issue before, most who fit gear position indicators here either have the conversion done to their clocks by Thommohawk or fit the GiPro gear indicator (or aTre with gear indicator), which fit to common plugs/wires across the whole model range.

Can you provide a link or details of what it is you purchased?

(here's the Thommohawk conversion - neat huh)

Hi,
This the one I purchased
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/272580540251
I now see its listed for 2004 onwards  :notworthy:

The difference is the ( K3has 4 pin plug ) ( K4 has 6 pin plug)
Both have the dealer mode wires  but the K4 also has a 12volt feed wire (and a 7.5 volt feed that's not  used ?)  After connecting the dealer mode wires , I have tried supplying the 12 volt feed the the plug from the battery but this doesn't work . It just gives a random flashing display of gears 1&2.
I'm not sure if the ECU is different on on a K4 or just the plug arrangements ( and the is a wire there I could use ?

I have seen the The tomo conversion and it is very trick 👍
I was just just after a quick plug n play tho :boogie2:
Although it's looking like I might have to get a tomo eventually.

I'm confused.
I build my gear position indicator myself, but as I understand, all factory made indicators should be connected inline of gear-position sensor and ECU. Other words, there should be 2 connectors instead of 1, like your e-bay item looks.

Am I wrong?  :whatever:

Don't think so Northern - never seen one that connects into the ECU at all.

Sparky - it wouldn't work on a K4 either. Basically the ECU changed with the K5 model onwards K2-K4 were all the same, so they have built this gear indicator for the later (FE) models. Earlier K2-K4 models had a single plug ECU, K5 onwards have dual plug ECU's

I'm really not sure if that can be adapted to work with your machine. If you can return it, I would, then either get a Thommo conversion or a GiPro gear indicator (which plugs across the white plug behind the LH side panel.

Thanks guys for all your comments  :coffeescreen:
I think I will return this  :jack:
Bring on the tomo conversion  :boogie:

I wish I'd had the Tommo full conversion done, but just went for blue LED's as I had a GiPro gear position indicator already fitted.
Rebuilt the bike back in Jan this year and the GiPro started causing FI warning light to show, so had to bin it :furious:
Assumption is the mother of all fuck ups!

grog

never had a prob with gipro, perfect. i like the blue readout. what does the thommo conversion do?

KiwiCol

LED's on the rev counter Grog, 1 through 6 for the gear position & change backlight to different colour / brightness if you want.
😎  Always looking for the next corner.  😎
