I made the mistake of visiting my local Ducati dealer and test rode a Diavel - loved it but then asked how much is my K5 1400 worth with 5k and full service history and new PR4 - just £2700 FFS  :cry2: ..cant let her go anyway in reality but felt insulted by that price  :furious:

Unfortunately as a trade-in - that's about right Notty, in fact not bad. You would get more selling privately, but at dealers - nah. I was only offered £3,500 trade-in on my K7 against my Explorer last year, so sold privately.

All this about "how much they are worth" when you see them advertised on eBay and the suchlike is all bollox - if you look at what 14's are actually selling for, its a lot less than what you expect. The ones advertised on eBay at silly prices don't sell.

So your trade-in was actually a pretty good price in all honesty

Nothing to do.............all day to do it....I love retirement

Rang the dealer back and he would go to £3000 against the 61 plate Diavel with 6K .. rather keep the 14 and pay cash for a Diavel I reckon...will have to work on the missus-any tips welcome !  :smile2:

Well that's a result!

If funds allow Notty, that's exactly what I'd do, the problem then though - which one to ride!

What you could suggest though is that if after getting the Diavel you do (regrettably) decide to sell the 14, given the dealer is offering £3k trade-in, you could get more selling privately, so offsetting the cost of the Ducati (and by taking off any "additions" sell those privately as well to return even more £££££'s).

What I will say - and I thought long and hard about this before selling mine - was how much I'd use the 14 if I bought another machine. Basically I concluded that much as I would have liked to keep the 14, it would have finished up a trophy rather than something to ride, which was a bit daft. So after speaking with the Financial Director, I decided no trade-in and sold mine privately, using some of our savings to fund what would have been the 14 trade-in price whilst I sold it.

But everyone to their own, what works for one......!

That is one clean bike Notty ,as for trade in prices its a friggin rip off !!!!!  I bet they are making a good profit from the Ducati
Remember every car driver wants to knock you off !!!!

There has never EVER been a Ducati i have liked EVER..... until the Ducati Diavel, it is a stunning bike. I would buy one tomorrow if i thought the wife wouldnt divorce me...

As for the trade in price, that 3k is a bloody good offer.. Obviously not what it is worth, but it is what its worth to them.
So if i do stuff all all day and noone sees me do it.. Am i still a lazy git?

Riders of Cardiff?
Sounds about right for them..They'll be making £1k at least on the Diavel and more than that on yours..RIP OFF :furious:

It's hard when something you have looked after and cherished is seemingly undervalued by someone else, but don't be too hard on the dealer.

I've run through this on the old forum before but if the dealer is giving you £2,700 you can probably assume that he is going to have to put it through the workshop for at least a check-over even if your bike is mint. That may cost him another £100.00.

Assuming that he wants to mark it up by 10% (which frankly is not a lot with dealership overheads) we are then at £3, 080.00

Then the killer blow; if he is a dealer of any size he is going to have to add VAT at 20% which means the sticker on your bike in his showroom is going to say £3,696.00.

You feel ripped off
He's made £280.00

One factor in this now is the newish Consumer laws in the UK which mean that any fault occurring in the first 6 months after purchase of an item, even a used bike, is assumed to have been there at the time of purchase unless the SELLER can prove otherwise. Also it can be rejected for a full refund if fault occurs in the first month. They are only allowed ONE attempt to repair and if it fails a refund less an allowance for use and time must be made.

Now this often does not come into play as most buyers just do not know their rights. Dealers and other retailers are not going to volunteer this information of course. However they do know that they remain liable so have to build in a contingency for the things they cannot see every time they sell a bike.

Often to sweeten a deal the dealer will load the part exchange value but not give away so much on the price of the new bike. If you are not having finance they lose their opportunity to make the commission on that which can increase the "price to change" of course.

If the 14 really has to go then you will always do better selling privately.

Its the reason I don't want to trade my Busa, I am thinking of testing the water to see if a decent swap may be a way forward. Currently got a 04 RZ Busa in black, mint and I mean mint condition with just 6k miles, needs absolutely nothing. Traders offering within £250 of each other and very low values against lesser quality 14s at top end prices. I like Barmy thought about 2 bikes but I have been there and I agree that one ends up as a trophy so ruled the option out. As it stands I will consider a private sale or swap with cash adjustment but on condition the expectations are realistic and level. Went to view a 14 yesterday that was promoted to me as a really nice bike only to be met with what at best can only be described as a very well used example that had been used for commuting in all weathers...............not ideal!
Why shake, rattle and roll when you can ride in style, get yourself a GSX1400..........................Any colour as long as its?

Thought I would do some 14 hunting today so phoned a number of dealers to see if a deal could be had with the Busa as part ex.
Shop 1, GSX1400 07 plate £4600, 17k miles, decent condition. PX allowance for 04 Busa, 6 Kmiles, mint £2700, £1900 to swap, erm no ta.
Shop 2, GSX1400 05 plate £4199, 29k miles, decent condition, PX allowance £2600, £1599 to swap, erm that will be a no again then.
Shop 3, GSX 1400 03 plate, £3600, 31k miles, average condition needs tyres, PX allowance £2600, Oh well!
Same shops later in the day I reversed the deal, shop 1, I am trading an 07 plate GSX1400, against £5 400 Busa, PX offer £3200 to £3400 need to see bike,  shop 2, similar deal,  £3200 immediate deposit required, shop 3 £3250, need to see bike with possible £100 to £200 more.
Looking like I will need to sell private or hold out for a swap as dealers are trying to steal, ironically all three said they are desperate for quality stock but cant get it...............Er, wonder why!

I realise everyone (dealers) have to make money on a deal or they won't be in business, but, there's profit & thievery! :furious:
