Hi guys,
when the bike (K5) idling i hear a noise from the left side of the engine especially when its cold, a ticking noise like valves or cam chain.
i must say that i have 57000km and i checked the valves at 50000km.
I hear it only from left side and i think it is from the generator cover.
I removed the cover and i checked the generator.. seems fine.
If it's the cam chain the noise must be from both sides. correct?
Could it be the one way bearing of the starter clutch.?
Help...

hiya did you check the bolt on the generator
as i found the 1 in my k5 was lose when i changed the casings last week they had not been off before .
guess other things to check are the read vales in the pairs system .

I'm sure others will be along with other idears

Have a listen to the top end, the injectors can be quite noisy.
Keep the rubber side down.          Mick

For what it's worth, mine also makes a ticking noise when the engine is cold. Soon as it warms up, this pretty much disappears completely.

mine is same. used to get concerned but always the same for years. i dont worry. id probably hear lots more noises if i didnt always use ear plugs. ride on my friends. its called character, the noises that is.

I checked all bolts on the generator and the injectors too. the noise comes from down left.
I have removed the PAIRS..
noise remains when the engine has warmed up but it is not so intense.
the noise is quite annoying....

Just a wild guess: exhaust gasket?

Try to listen with a hose. About half meter to meter of 5 to 6 mm hose. The other end to your ear and with the other end you can find the noise quite accurately. Thats a very cheap poor mans stethoscope.

Same as DanGSX ticking when cold and gone when heated up ,my old FJ1100 had a ticking noise for years !!  :confused1: never let it bother me ,but I suppose it could get annoying  :bugga:

Listen to any engine cold and it will rattle and click a bit until the oil warms up and circulates (as where is the oil when cold - in the sump!). Start it on its side stand when cold and the oil has even further to reach to the top RH corner of the engine and then instantly runs away to the LH side of the head

They all tick and make odd noises when cold which soon go away if you let them warm without revving for 15 secs or so. Do remember that these engines are pretty unburstable, have been around since earliest 2001 and apart from second gear issues on some earlier models have not had a problem mechanically.

Personally I think you are all worrying about nothing, mine ticked when cold and it never affected it at all - it soon disappeared once warm.

As I've said before, don't get too worried about this ticking noise. In all the years I was on the old org, I don't recall any issues coming up with "ticking" although that's not to say there isn't an issue. All I'm saying is that its not common by any means, and as for opening up the top end - that could be a bit drastic
