Strange FI error

Hi All,

I retrieved my bike from the Garage after it being stored over the winter months.

I noticed a few times, when the bike is cold and I turn the key to start the Fuel Pump, the speedo dial jumps up and down much faster than usual, the pump buzzes for just a second and it displays "FI".

If I then turn the key off, wait a few seconds and try again, it starts fine and works perfectly.

Any clues?

I'd say check all the electrical connectors as a first step sounds like a bit of damp in one somewhere giving a false reading to the ecu.
Good luck

I had similar issues on mine 14.
Because it was not happening every time, I extend diagnostic switch, and bring it's out form under the seat. When it hapend next time, I did not switch ignition off, but just turn diagnostics switch on, and read FI error code on odometer display.

mine was related to ignition lock, so I take it apart and clean all contacts inside. There is topic regarding it on site.

So first step - you have to define what is the FI error you have.

Cheers for the feedback. Yeah I reckon it might have been some damp, I have some mist on the inside of the Dials (probably when I hosed the bike down during the winter).

Hasent happened since I been using it again, so hopefully the issue resolved itself.

Hi,

I got around to reading the FI code. It was C42 which is ignition switch so the same issue as yours.

Makes sense given the washes I gave the bike during winter, where presumably the damp would linger for a long time.

I also remembered that when I tried to unlock the steering lock for the 1st time in a month or so, it was jammed and took some wriggling to free it up.

Is it safe to remove the key barrel and partially dismantle it to access the contacts?

oh, and another question:

Does the ignition switch only provide the anti theft signal (if thats what its called) during initial startup, or does it continue to operate throughout the engine running?

i.e. if the ignition contacts are intermittent, could that cause the bike to cut out/cut in intermittently as im riding it?

Mine is K3, so it do not have immobilizer, so I do not have experience with it on 14.
May be someone else can answer your questions.

Hi Vonny, yes you sure can dismantle the ignition barrel for cleaning or whatever.  Ummm the igintion contacts? well if they were making & breaking, it'd be like turning the key on & off whilst it's running or you riding.

I don't think it'd do that though, it would either work or not work.

Cheers folks. Mine is a K4 - Does this have an immobiliser or is it standard lock?

KiwiCol

Standard Vonny, K5 onward for the immobiliser.

There's no immobilizer in the older ones, but there is a antitheft imbedded in the lock - i.e you cant just cut the wires and connect them to get it running.
...I accidentally Mordored my motor, is it bad...?
