What are people doing if they want to video a long trip?

Carry spare batteries? If so, what battery charger do you have?

Have some sort of cable that plugs in to keep GoPro powered?  If so, I'd love to see your set up.

Don't forget to specify what model GoPro you have as well.

Thanks

I have a 32 Gb card in my Hero2.  Not sure how many hours of footage I'd be able to record on one card...
I know it will be dependent on resolution and framerate, but some guides would be helpful if anyone has any...

I have a battery eliminator on my Hero 3 which replaces the battery and plugs into a USB port. This makes the GoPro a little fatter (you get a replacement back door due to the additional wire) but works well. Whether they do one for the Hero 2 though Mike I don't know.

Go onto eBay and search on "Hero2 eliminator" - in the U.K. you can get them but it's an import from the US. I paid about £19 for the one for my Hero3.

You may want to update your GoPro to a 3 or later - I've just bought a second secondhand Hero3 with remote control to put on the back of mine for under £100.

I haven't seen any for the Hero2 - not sure they exist.

I do like the idea of a newer camera (they probably work better at night time for a start) especially if it has either a smartphone link or display screen on the back - I have difficulty reading the TINY icons on the lcd screen on the front of the hero2.

I hadn't considered second hand - bit worried as to whether they'd be damaged / not properly functioning etc....
Maybe I need to, because I sure can't justify the $ for a new one.

On mine, I use a usb cord plugged into a 12v power supply on my bars.  This gives me 7 & a bit hours of recording on a 32gb card at 1050 res.

If I go down to 720 res, I can get longer.  7 hrs recording is long enough to be riding.  It just breaks it down to approx. 2gb segments - about 35 min I think, & starts a new one where the last one left off.

I recorded a whole south island trip doing this one year, just down-load the card each night to the laptop, erase it & you're ready to go for the next day. You get everything this way & just use the segments you want.

That's good as long as its dry I guess but charging AND having a waterproof case is probably a different matter.
Do you have a skeleton case to allow the usb being connected?

I've got the skeleton case & a holder that I use when powering by USB.

I used to have it mounted behind the screen, in the centre of the bars, never got wet there, even in rain.  1 bonus of having a wee screen I suppose.
Can't mount it there now as I've got the radar detector mounted there, the GoPro is on a new mirror mount (RAM) it mounts under the fitting of the mirror arm, good & solid, brought it on e-bay from uk, cost me $65nzd landed.

The other one I had cost me $165 $nzd, Adaptive mount. This particular version of their mounts isn't any good for what I want, so $165 just sitting on the shelf in the cave.

Have you got a link to that mirror mount you mention?

I wonder if I can get a skeleton case for a Hero2 somewhere.

Came across a bloke who had bought a cheap Chinese waterproof case for his GoPro and then carefully cut it to allow both a 12volt charging lead and a remote mic lead to be plugged in while riding. He did say make the hole a snug fit to stop the leads  moving and keep moisture out too.
Another great day on the right side of the grass.😎

VladTepes

I had actually considered doing exactly that but have been unable to find a "cheap Chinese waterproof case"

Probably the same mount I bought recently - very impressed with it

Mine is a wee bit different Dave, it mounts under the actual mirror fitting itself, not on the mirror arm.  Just figured it would be a nicer fit than clamping onto the arm

Copied the link of it, hope it works.

Yes I saw that one when looking for mine, but I needed to clear the screen hence why I opted for clamping on the arm, as could move it further out
