GSX1400 Turbo owners?

I might be wrong but front mounted is probably less lag as shorter plumbing and rear mounted has more ground clearance.

For me it was more about having the turbo and the performance, but not showing it off.

The longer pipes add some lag but the 1400 has enough power without the turbo so that was a non-issue really - kinda made it two bikes in one. Longer headers also mean a shorter intake path so that absorbs some of it, also keeping the turbo in its own airflow helped keep down the temperature of the air around the engine and oil cooler which is helpful in the hot climate we have.

The main thing  though, was the stealth appearance as im more about go and less about show, and technically a turbo requires a fairly large investment in engineering approval.

My new setup will be much the same, but with a little more support in the way of fuel system and electronics. Last time I went from 96rwhp to 178rwhp, for minimal cost, so I was very happy with the result... new one I'll just be aiming for 10% more and some better electronic control systems, to make 200rwhp and have it a bit more usable. Not aiming to set records or outsourcing anyone, my bike is for me and that's how everyone should be building theirs too... do what you like and what works, not what you think you're supposed to.

I have a friend with a rear mounted turbo on a car, it makes well north of 1000hp and the turbo is mounted at the rear bumper - the exhaust to turbo to intake pipe is a good eoght to ten metres and its fine.

Perhaps it's not ideal but many keyboard warriors who have never turbocharged anything will tell you it can't and doesn't work.

I doubled my horsepower for about $4k AUD start to finish including fuel system, power commander, turbo, fabrication, and clutch upgrade. Perhaps not something that sets the world on fire but it worked and it was fast... not really much else you want on a budget thing build in your garage.

Shifty, excellent write up, one of the best. Ive done most mods but never turbo, love what you blokes do. Rode a 14 with supercharger, so ugly, can understand the power you get. Think it was 220 then, now apart aiming at 300. Another Brisbane boy also.

UMMMMMMMMMMM I've been watching this thread grow and I'm still questioning WHY you need twice the horsepower on a GSX or any other bike on the street. Is it actually legal in Australia to modify your regular of the shelf bike with a turbo ? How do you control 300 HP without flipping the bike or wheelieing uncontrollably off in to the bushes.  :whatever:  :whistling:

I agree Chris, more than enough for me as standard - if I wanted more would buy a sports bike  :)

The problem with retirement is that you cant take a day off

I have to say I'm of the same mind. A standard 14 is fast enough for me any day, so as much as I can respect the engineering skill in these bikes I can't see the point.

Oh there's absolutely no need for it, no.

The real question is "Why not?"

Its just for shits and giggles. :D

One thing I've noticed is that no-one seems to worry about the strain on the gearbox from passing all the extra horses through it, especially on the earlier K2/3 machines where it was known that second gear was prone to giving way under constant extreme acceleration (I assume using more horses would do similar?)

How have turbo owners got around the gearbox weakness - the only thing I've seen one guy do (was it Blackadder on the old org?) was cross cut the gears, but whether that made any real difference I don't know.

So, with beefing up the clutch and pushing more horses through the engine - how are the standard gearboxes holding up - or what do you do to them?
Nothing to do.............all day to do it....I love retirement

undercut, but yeah, Also some replace some of the shafts with beefier busa items.

do you have any photos of the mods to the exhaust, and what kit did you use, many thanks

Sorry, I didn't find any picks of those pipes. They are made by taking all original out from the pipe and
inserting there half a meter of 2" aftermarket silencer pipe (drilled full of small holes) and silencer wool.
It wasn't any kit. They were very loud with N/A engine, but they were street legal on MOT with turbo (91-92 db)

VladTepes

Well I've done the maths and given some other expense priorities I can't justify spending more to turbo my 1400.

As such the Turbo and wastegate I got from @Teufel I'll be selling.

Once I identify what it actually is.
