Sudden loss of power under acceleration

Hi there. I'm hoping to draw on some owners with a little more experience than me. I picked up a beautiful 2007 GSX1400 (with aftermarket exhaust and power commander) from the Gold Coast and proceeded to ride him down to Sydney on Tuesday (850km!) He's a nice ride, but on four occasions since (i.e. within a week) he's startled me a little. Basically, when accelerating through the gears to reach cruising speed, he suddenly and without warning gives up on himself, with revs and power dropping off dramatically. Each time, I've had to make an emergency pull over, upon which he then got himself together and took off again. On one occasion, however, he came to a complete stall, but restarted as if nothing happened. So, I've been in contact with the previous owner who claims not to have ever experienced it (yeah, right!). I'm thinking air, fuel, or electrical faults Will possibly go for changing the air filter and fuel filter first, then try the plugs before going for the sensors etc. I've also read a little about the throttle cable needing adjustment, so perhaps that's it. Anyway, I suppose I'd like to know if anyone has experienced anything similar. I'd appreciate any advice or expertise you may have. The key is occasional/unpredictable loss of power when accelerating (never decelerating). I just need to get this sorted then he'll be a great bike

Sounds like a blocked fuel filter, if lucky it may be just the teabag filter, mine did exactly as you described and it was just the teabag

It's worth checking the fuel filters but being an intermittent fault I doubt they're your cutting out problem. Side stand switch maybe or water in the fuel too. Maybe just a bad connection somewhere so I'd go right through the wiring harness & spray a contact cleaner on all joints & re-connect.

Maybe wrong but to me sounds like a classic case of fuel starvation. Thats how EFI motors behave when they lose pressure/flow. A good place to start i reckon. External filter a good mod, for me at least. As Snapey said, can of contact cleaner, unplug every connecter you can find, clean and replug, easy job to know theyre clean. Have a look at our check list for new owners, all those things done make a nicer ride.

Pressure control value on the high pressure fuel filter could be leaking too, they are known to fall out.

Check the wiring under the tank too, I've had one of the earth leads snap in the past.

Thanks for all the great advice. I think I found the problem. Check out the crud caked onto and around the fuel filter (pictured). Was pretty easy job to pull out, clean up and replace. I did the plugs and air filter as well. He's running a lot better now, needless to say. Be warned anyone who buys a bike with claims of it being well/recently serviced. Check everything to keep safe and get home
