This comes up a bit and generally seams to help the bikes .
My question is how many different ways have folk done this .
Mine goes from the rear breather tower thing to the frame by the rear brake reservoir.
How do others do theirs .

From memory doesn't the main earth lead go to the engine anyway? So what you've added is effectively an extra earth for the frame (to which most electrical stuff is earthed). It probably duplicates the small earth lead with the corrosion prone connector in that sits near the rear brake reservoir as far as I recall the layout of the system.

The battery negative goes from the engine breather tunnel to the battery and has a (thicker than all the others) linked into it halfway along it's length.
I added my extra earth from 1 off the other bolts on the tunnel directly to the frame near the rear brake reservoir.
I found all this out when the main earth failed and when starting the bike tried to earth using the gear position tiny earth to start resulting in a none starting very smokey bike .
Had to replace both main earthlead and the gears position wires .
That's also when I added the extra earth .

Makes sense.

Your story reminds me of melting handbrake cables on LRs when trying to start them after the earth lead has snapped.

Metro's fry the the throttle cable if you forget to refit the engine earth...
Started out with nothing, still got most of it left.

18" pre-assembled earth lead from Halfords was about £5 with trade card discount & I have run it from the battery earth terminal to the front O/S bolt on the breather cover, basically the bolt directly in front of the original earth lead is fixed to then secured it with the same cable clamps as the original use - seems to have had a positive effect  :rofl2:
