A few months ago I bought a little half cabin boat with a 15 year old 90hp Evinrude motor. The boat is great and the motor goes well but the hour meter didn't work so I had no idea how long it would last before needing replacement.

It then developed a miss so it was off to the boat doctor for an opinion. Stuffed injector was the verdict @$673 + labour but then the good news. The engine is brilliant & has only 166 hours but he could also download the history of the thing so he sent me a copy.

You boaties might understand the figures better than me but apparently I kicked a goal for a change.

Yep, a low hour outboard is good. Sorry but those costs seems a bit high for just an injector, or did they replace all of them?  They're pretty easily available online, and especially for  that age outboards they're not coded like modern injectors. Easy to replace as well.

Just keep the motor clean by flushing with fresh water after every trip.

I wish it was that simple Eric but according to the manual and the mechanic they are coded on the E-TEC engine. I'm sure they're available online but seeing it's the first outboard I've had I wanted to know what I'd bought so I asked for a full service too. The mechanic is a friend of a friend and comes highly recommended but I don't know the guy & don't expect parts at trade price so Hunts Marine retail of $673.18 had to be paid. Doesn't the word BOAT mean "break out another thousand"? Below is copied from the manual.

IMPORTANT: All injectors must be installed in
the correct cylinder by serial number. Improper
injector installation can result in outboard failure.
Installation of replacement injectors requires the
use of diagnostic software and coefficient data
supplied with all replacement injectors on 3.5 in.
floppy disk.

 Pleased you have it in good running condition.       I had a look at the print out, means nothing to me,  never seen one before.  Mine has carbs, 6 of them & loves fuel.

Cheers Snapey, I stand corrected, I would not have expected that from a 15yo motor, but there you go.  For a full service and check over and peace of mind I guess it doesn't matter at the end of the day what it costs.  And now you know where to find a good boat mechanic.

Sound like final injector trim to the cylinder, believe it fine tunes the amount of fuel injected - same as Volvo off road dump trucks and many others presumably
