My front tyres are down to 2mm after 10k on my VW Tiguan 4motion ( crap continentals)  I don't understand why 4x4 cars are fitted with summer tyres, ok the weather doesn't get too bad here but a 2 wheel car with the correct tyres will drive better in winter conditions. I usually fit all season tyres as a compromise. New Michelin all season 255/40/20 ( an uncommon size) are £280. Found same tyre from a tyre place for £180 - but they are 2017 manufacture what's the opinion of 3 year old tyres being fitted? thoughts guys 
or have found top quality tyres but 45 height instead of 40, would this make a difference? or just don't drive in bad weather !!

45 Profile is 5% taller than a 40, it being a percentage of the width. It'll make your speedo read slightly lower, but as most cars over read anyway, it'll probably be about right.

As for three year old tyres, would take tyres off your car because they are three years old? no nor would I.

3 year old (new) tires on a 4 x 4 wouldn't matter 1 bit.   I wouldn't hesitate to fit these if they were the ones I wanted, the age thing, whilst it still relates to car tires, is mainly a concern for bikes.

We have a VW Caddy Life Maxi and the front tyres lasted about 9K, it is used mostly on short runs.

Are they made with chewing gum Jeff?  Or do you drive it like you ride your bikes?

Col, I don't drive it much her indoors does, I think it's the short local journey's all junction turn's, and maybe the the van type style 
I'll check the type on back they are still original from new 12k, 4 years old.

Front wheel drive?  If so (I'm not familiar with this car / van) it's probably because the fronts are doing all the work & the rears are just rolling along behind.

Hi Notty, unless you are doing serious 4WDing, a 3yo tyre won't matter 1 iota.  I have just bought a set of  hwy tyres for commuting in my 4wd as i was running a set of all terrains that were hurting my fuel economy The hwy tyres and wheels i bought are about 3yo. Main reason is the rims, as these are factory and same as the current alloys that my 4wd tyres run on.

I had cheap chinese tyres on car, changed to Goodyear Optilife, double the price, supposedly very good. Chinese steered way better, lasted longer than these will, were way better in wet. How do you choose?

Original tyres are Continental, new one's Yokohama. It is front wheel. I actually get high mileage out of car tyres because I have no interest in going fast in them I get tailgaters all the time.

An ex had a LWB Caddy, the van tyres on it reminded me of BT-021s. They didn't work as tyres & didn't last either.
