@mjgt, The point you are making was in my sights already. I have to say it feels like a bit of NIMBYism, especially as I pay full whack council tax down there on my glorified shed. In fact I'm charged more for that two bedroom chalet than my four bedroom house in the West Midlands and I have hardly any pull on the facilities down there – Unless something happens in total defiance of nature I'll never be putting children through schools, and I'll never bother the local registrar as the wife would almost certainly just shove my body in the boot and bury me at home in the back garden to keep the costs down and her roses up. As is often the case people are happy for "outsiders" to subsidise the local population and expect to give you very little back.

I am lead to believe that some towns in Cornwall (for example) claim their population doubles in the height of the tourist season. Well, if they can't handle what would be a comparative handful of "second home" owners it suggests that they can be in no way prepared to serve the huge influx of summer tourists. The implication is that it is a bloody dangerous place to go on holiday and people should seriously consider Columbia or Somalia instead.

Anyway... As well as the things I already mentioned, all of my tools were down there which would leave me stuck if we hit a problem at home during lock-down (the wife would have simply nothing to repair anything with) and I also remembered that my DSLR camera and lenses hadn't been brought back which was now also bothering me.

Having realised that the police don't actually have any power of enforcement until tomorrow (Thursday) I decided it was now or never for today. My reasoning was that the worst that could happen would be someone standing 2m away saying " 'Allo, 'allo, 'allo, what's going on here then?" to which I would naturally reply "Cor blimey guv, you've got me banged to rights and no mistake" and that would be the end of it.

I did the run as I intended, straight through without stopping and engaged with no one except the site manager at a comfortable 5m distance. Whilst I'm gutted that I have not been able to finish my project at least I have my things back around me at home, nothing rotting in the fridge and the place is secure. (And I can take now photos as well, as long as they are of my house or garden).

During my 400 mile round trip I think I may have caught sight of a road block at the top of one of the exit slips near Taunton, but I never encountered anything directly. The motorway was busy with HGVs which seemed to be enjoying the clearer than usual roads, but I was by no means the only private car out today. Ironically a friend / neighbour took a walk down to the local pharmacy to pick up an inhaler this afternoon and had his motives questioned by officers of the law who were presumably checking for people who had illegally and maliciously walked their dog twice in a day.

Going back to the Second Homes thing, I heard on the radio during my drive back that Prince Charles had been diagnosed with a Coronavirus at his home in Scotland. Now, we all know his main home is Highgrove in Gloucestershire, so I am pretty confident that he is likely to be pulled in for questioning by the Highland Constabulary tomorrow. When this happens my faith in the fact that we are all equal in this great country will be assured.

Stay safe.

Pete.

Is it just me, or does this lockdown feel to others too, like a freaking public holiday? I`ve never seen so many people walking, jogging and cycling around as I have during this last 48hrs.

Maybe the springlike weather hasn`t helped Boris`s call, but even so, i`m kinda thinking that when the government said its ok to take excercise once a day, surely they didn`t mean ALL day?

As I spent time gardening this morning, I couldn`t help but notice a family group of four people yomping across the fields to the front of our property, two of whom were wearing backpacks for chrissakes! Clearly out for the day. Bollocks to everyone else. Morons :furious:

It now time for the authorities to get a grip, or we`ll be under `lock & key` for the rest of the year......and I can`t begin to comprehend an entire summer without getting out on the bike!

Hooli

No idea what you're on about with this exercise lark but I've just serviced my push bike to cycle to work tomorrow

We're not even considering homeworking till tuesday, got too much to build/setup/fix/configure so everyone else can do it first.

Today at beach, 10 people sitting at 8 seater table. Sharing finger food. Some very smart people in my country. Im a proud Aussie but sometimes wonder why.

🆘 CITIZENS ALERT 🆘

*AN EXCELLENT SUMMARY ON THE CORONAVIRUS.*

From an Asst. Prof. in Infectious Diseases at Johns Hopkins University.

It is quite informative,
and is an excellent summary as to how to avoid the contagion, and
it is very clear and easy to follow.

*The virus is not a living organism,* but a protein molecule (DNA) covered by a protective layer of lipid (fat) which, when absorbed by the cells of the ocular, nasal or buccal mucosa, changes its genetic code (mutation) and converts into aggressor and multiplier cells.

*Since the virus is not a living organism but a protein molecule, it is not killed,* but decays on its own.  The disintegration time depends on the temperature, humidity and type of material where it lies.

*The virus is very fragile;  the only thing that protects it is a thin outer layer of fat.
That is why any soap or detergent is the best remedy, because the foam CUTS the FAT (that is why you have to rub so much, for 20 seconds or more, to make a lot of foam)
By dissolving the fat layer, the protein molecule disperses and breaks down on its own.

*HEAT melts fat;  this is why it is so good to use water above 25 degrees Celsius for washing hands, clothes and everything.
In addition, hot water makes more foam and that makes it even more useful.

*Alcohol or any mixture with alcohol over 65% DISSOLVES ANY FAT, especially the external lipid layer of the virus.

*Any mix with 1 part bleach and 5 parts water directly dissolves the protein, and breaks it down from the inside.

*Oxygenated water helps long after soap, alcohol and chlorine, because peroxide dissolves the virus protein, but you have to use it pure and it hurts your skin.

*NO BACTERICIDE SERVES.  The virus is not a living organism like bacteria;  *you cannot kill what is not alive with antibiotics.*

*NEVER shake used or unused clothing, sheets or cloth.
While it is glued to a porous surface, it is very inert and disintegrates only between 3 hours (fabric and porous) 4 hours (copper, because it is naturally antiseptic) and wood (because it removes all the moisture and does not let it peel off)
24 hours (cardboard) 42 hours (metal) and 72 hours (plastic)
But if you shake it or use a feather duster, the virus molecules float in the air for up to 3 hours, and can lodge in your nose.

*The virus molecules remain very stable in external cold, or artificial cold such as air conditioners in houses and cars.  They also need moisture to stay stable, and also darkness.  Therefore, dehumidified, dry, warm and bright environments will degrade it faster.

*UV LIGHT on any object that may contain it breaks down the virus protein.
For example, to disinfect and reuse a mask, UV LIGHT is perfect.  But be careful, because it also breaks down collagen (which is protein) in the skin, eventually causing wrinkles and skin cancer.

*The virus CANNOT go through healthy skin.

*Vinegar is NOT useful because it does not break down the protective layer of fat.

*NO SPIRITS, NOR VODKA, serves.
The strongest vodka is 40% alcohol, and you need 65%.

*LISTERINE SERVES. It is 65% alcohol.

*The more confined the space, the more the concentration of the virus will be.  The more open or naturally ventilated, the less.

N.B. In addition to the above, you have to wash your hands before and after touching mucosa, food, locks, knobs, switches, remote control, cell phone, watches, computers, desks, TV, etc.
And when using the bathroom,
you have to HUMIDIFY HANDS DRY from so much washing of them, because the molecules can hide in the micro cracks.  The thicker the moisturizer, the better.

*Also keep your NAILS SHORT so that the virus does not hide below them.

PLEASE SHARE WIDELY AND KINDLY, MUCH THANKS. 🆘🆘🆘
