A funny thing happened whilst on my ride today..
I was flowing nicely through the bends on Sophie when there was a loud Bang and a slight skip of her stability.. Followed by a loud whirring sound..
"Golly Gosh" thought I..
"This is irksome indeed"

When I pulled over there was a smell of burning Rubber and I assumed I had a puncture..
But no puncture had occurred..
It was actually the chain guard that had somehow come loose and jammed against the rear tyre..
I suppose the plus point is I no longer have a Chicken strip on the left side of the tyre..

Finally..
Does anyone have a decent Chain Guard they would like to sell me??

Mine snapped at the rear most mounting point years ago. I got it welded, it snapped again, I threw it in the corner of the garage where it still resides.

Hooli,
Does that mean you are chain guard less ?

It does & it passes MOTs fine like it. Does mean that side of the tail piece gets a bit muckier from the chain lube being flung, but as you might guess that doesn't bother me.

Must confess it crossed my mind to do without..
Was riding with a mate on an XJR1300 who has been without a chain guard for years..
My original chain guard had also snapped in the same place as yours.. It was like that when I bought it..
A mechanic friend only today told my not to bother with welding it as the surrounding area that the weld adheres to wasn't beefy enough for a permanent job!!

That could have gone a bit shit shaped Speedy, glad you're okay, I will check my chain guard now to see if it's secure and has no damage to it.
Keep the rubber side down.          Mick

I be been out to Sophie to clean off the blobs of melted rubber on the rear wheel rim.
There's now a fair few scrapes of the Red powder coating that's gone right down to the alloy.
So it looks like I shall get the rear wheel re powder coated after all during this winter.
I shall wait till the rear tyre is ready for changing and then have it done.
Or buy a spare rear wheel !!
For now I have touched up the missing powder coat with some Red touch up I bought a while back.

I've been through two genuine chain guards and a stainless aftermarket one  :cry2: :cry2: :cry2:, they all broke in the same place and same manner.

If there is a suitable replacement made in plastic please advise

Best allrounder I've ever owned 👍

Obviously a weak point on them.
I will use a large stainless washer this time round.
I can't help thinking "chain guards" are more cosmetic than anything.
I really cannot see a piece of thin and flimsy metal stopping a chain in full flight.
There must be enormous force from a snapped chain.
If mine goes again then I shall do without !

Mister Fishfinger

I don't think it's there to stop a broken chain. It just catches the crud that would be flung upwards off the chain. It might also keep loose clothing away, although as we aren't riding round in loon pants anymore this probably isn't an issue.

Glad you are ok Speedy, chain guards can be replaced especially with the extensive parts that are available on the forum (Thks Steve)

Slightly different scenario but I once came across a rider on the motorway who appeared to be broken down, I stopped and he was nursing a badly grazed hand and had a well mullered Vfr.
It transpired that he was happily riding at 70 ish when suddenly he was spat off, one of his throw overs had worked loose and into the back wheel ,locking it up and throwing him off ,wrecking his bike.
Lucky for him it was early morning and he didn't get killed by following traffic!

Def a moral to me learned eh.

Maybe get a hugger they usually have a chain guard built into them (so to speak) and are made from ABS plastic or fibreglass or whatever.
