I had a similar problem on one of my previous 1400's but it was due to over tightening the front mud guard mounting bolts when replacing the originals with Stainless Cap Screws, cracked from the bolt hole in two directions, lesson learnt! Sourced a used guard and fitted using the original bolts nipped up to recommended torque and didn't have the problem again

Tim, before experts found. Jack up front, undo all bolts. Make sure everything slides easily into place, forks into yokes, axle into both lowers.Torque itall up. Guard is last thing to tighten, all bolts should line up.  If something doesnt line up, you have a problem. That needs further investigation. A process worth doing.

Yep - will give it a shot this weekend. Worth a try - cheers for the encouragement!

Just to finish this post with an update...
The front wheel was not aligned. After loosening pinch bolts and clamps, and a whack on a pole, it's a lot straighter now, and tips into corners like a boss. It's quite amazing how bad it got before that. Will definitely be more in tune with the bike again I'm riding more for fun than commutes.

I did get it looked at by a suspension place. He checked it over and advised the frame is bent. To resolve that is circa 700-1100 AUD. I'm just sitting on that news for a bit.
I took advice from http://gsx1400owners.org/forum/index.php?topic=3137.0 (most excellent post) and checked the rear wheel also. Adjusted it a little as well.
Its way better!

I may get OSD about the frame being bent. But I've had it for 7 years like that, so I'll see how I'm thinking after some more riding.

Replaced the brake pads, new brake and clutch fluid. New Renthal low and 30mm risers. Feels great!

Looking forward to a ride next weekend to Springbrook National Park.

Thanks all for your advice!

It cant b bent that much? If u drop off swinging arm and sub frame your only left with a head stock and in simple terms a few round bits of tube so it really cant b that bad? Also if its now handling like a dream I wouldn't bother  ;)
And u can probably get something for OCD speak to Mr Barmy!! ;) :rofl2:

Tim, its sorted. Forget the bent frame thing, just my opinion. Line up rear wheel which ever way you think best, a few options. I did mine yrs ago, contrary to most, my adjusting marks are spot on. Got lucky i guess. Ride on mate, too many worry over problems that dont exist.
