Dealer fitted fork seals

Would you believe it, I dropped my bike into a main dealer to have the fork seals changed, mot and a pair of tyres fitted, this was 2 weeks ago..
Due to holidays I picked the bike up today and just before riding away I checked the forks to find that there was oil leaking past both dust covers...

I spoke to the service chappie again and he got the guy who did the job to look at the forks, initially he thought the leakage was grease- wrong!
Wheel the bike into the workshop, wait 15mins
The next theory was that the original dust seals were reused and may have been impregnated with the original oil leakage - wrong!

Now they are assuming that the technician must have damaged the seals when fitting them and are doing the job again.
They did say when I was at the counter that there was signs of pitting but as long as the bike isn't not ridden "sports bike " fashion this pitting would not touch the seals and the technician had checked this.

It seems that despite taking the bike to a dealer I can't  rely on a proper job being done, good job I didn't ride away !!

Now that's crap, it's not even a difficult job to do!

If I was to get work done on my bike the last place I'd take it to is a dealer, but even a dealer mechanic should be able to do fork seals. Anyone worth his salt usually has his own business although a lot of them are shonky too. In saying that, there are good mechanics out there but finding them is the hard part.

If you look like your passport photo then you're too sick to travel.

That's shit, what sort of dealer cant change fork seals, it's not a difficult job.  I wouldn't trust them with anything more demanding.
Keep the rubber side down.          Mick

I think that part of the issue is the seals - dealer seals are so expensive to buy that they sit on the shelves for a long time and can start to dry out - I fitted a set of O/E seals and they lasted about 6 months before they started to seep

Hell, it's a wonder they get through the warranty period.

I have been very lucky and have always had new bikes until the 1400 came along, never had to get fork seals done before

I love my 1400 so better get used to it.

I used O/E seals when I last did my forks, about five years & many miles ago. They are still fine, aftermarket ones seem crap & miss one of the sealing rings out.

I wonder if the dealer genius* fitted them upside down? as they have three lips, two for oil & one for dirt.

Chrisl

I'm beginning to wonder whether they did them at all, kinda strange that both new seals are leaking.
Will ask questions about what seals were actually fitted

Did the bushes and seals on emma's 1400 forks this morning along with new oil total cost was around £60 plus my time(free) .
Dealers are rip offs and you can't trust most of them .

I have some problem with OEM seals few years ago. I change them three times by weekend  :mwink: Kanerdog 1x1 have same problem too. From that time I use ONLY SKF seals (skf kitg-46k) and no more problem with leaking forks. But they are 2x more expensive than OEM seals.

Well he stores his stuff there, so figured he must be close - anyway, the bike could do with the run.
