Point to point speed cameras

Our govt have just got a new fetish. Point to Point Speed Cameras. Seems to be the latest attempt to reduce our road toll. Please read 'collect revenue'.
We have discussed this before but to me inattention is a more likely cause of serious crashes. (Excepting the stolen car full of numptys doing 160km in a 50km area.)
So those that have these cameras in operation on their roads, have they proven to deminish the road toll?
We also have CCTV cameras being installed all over the place. But thats a whole different story.

We already have these in the UK, here they are termed "average speed camera's", many just on the point of being "upgraded" to track across a number of roads, so for instance, tracking you on a motorway, then as you pull off onto lower limit side roads. Nearly every set of motorway road works has them these days. Good revenue earner, as you say.

Although I always find it amusing when you see people slam on their brakes just before one having gone way over the limit beforehand. Whilst that may work to get your speed down for the static cameras, it seems some people cannot grasp the idea of an "average" speed between 2 points

As your last paragraph points out Dave, most people are too stupid to drive which is why we need this sort of thing. It's bloody annoying for those of us able to look forwards & pay attention when driving to be restricted to a speed the idiots can cause less damage at.

point made !!! its all about the money and as police budgets get squeezed the more of this sort of thing you will see , i have couple guys i know who drive squad cars marked and unmarked (handy as i know the cars and most likely were they will be  ) and they have said more than once that if it wasn't for speeding and general motoring affences the police would not be able to function on the current budget !

Just reckless Grog.....imagine if a blind lady on her mobility scooter struggling with a flat tyre, small handbag dog yapping in the front basket had been crossing the road, barely enough juice in the battery to make it across.
You would have no chance to avoid them.

In the name of research. I decided (management was on the back) to see which antipodean country was the best value for money to speed in.
For my study it appears I chose to use a speed camera hidden in a van. Why doesn't the prick stick to taking family photos. Anyway he will soon have no job when the point to point cameras turn up.
As you can see my speed was excessive. But I ask you, look at the value for money, compare Grogs $175.00 for 78 in a 70km area against my $30.00 for 107 in a 100km area.

I really should spend more time watching the speedo and less time looking at the road.

Grog, You wouldn't last in NZ it's far to cold, I seen the Brissy Brigade in Dorrigo never seen so many beanies. And wages are double in Brisbane hence the difference in fines.

I'm not on Facebook but my wife is and a friend of ours was recently "done" for speeding on the M1 motorway. The matrices above the lanes read 60 with a circle around it meaning a camera would take your picture if you went too fast. There were no roadworks, accidents, congestion etc so when his fine came through he queried the reason for the restriction and was told environmental emissions control!

These things are revenue raises pure and simple.

Pretty cheap here. 7 km/h gets you a 15€ warning within city limits. Outside it's 10€. 11-20 km/h over costs 30€ (outside city).

I don't know if any of you follow 44teeth on YouTube, but if not I recommend it - 2 guys running a bike-related channel with a good sense of humour.

Anyway they recently did a piece on riding through Europe and one of them got stung by a camera trap in Switzerland. To be fair, he was doing 144km/h in an 80 limit, but the fine was 4000 Swiss francs (about 3000 GBP), payable on the spot and accompanied by an instant 3-month ban (which for him means the bike goes in the back of the support van).

Apparently he was only 2km/h away from 'go straight to jail and lose your bike'.

Strict, eh?
