Soft rear panniers/bags

Hi all.

Im looking for a recommendation for a set of soft bags that can be mounted with the strap under the seat and not hit the exhaust.

Any options out there?

They do, but despite what they say they are not that waterproof, even if you use the covers they supply.

Personally I'd recommend hard panniers over soft, or, if it's just one person travelling rather than 2, a 40L waterproof roll bag strapped across the back seat.

Travelling on my own, I used a Kriega tail pack. Here's a picture of my bike with the US30 (30 litre) pack strapped to the seat. The pack comes with a set of adjustable straps, which I looped around the subframe under the seat. When you stop, you can just pop 4 quick release catches and take the pack with you. It even comes with a shoulder strap to carry it off the bike.

If you have a rack you could strap it to that instead of the seat.

Build quality on these is tremendous and I can vouch for them being 100% waterproof, although they are quite expensive. Mine was listed at £119 in the UK but I got it a bit cheaper with a voucher code. I doubt I will ever need to buy another one.

If you want more storage you can strap more Kriegas together. You can get 20 and 10 litre versions and you can strap them on top or one on each side. Obviously this would add to the cost, although it would still be a lot less than a set of hard luggage. Hard luggage is better in many ways, but I personally don't do enough touring to justify the cost. It's also nice to have luggage that you can use on any bike.

Depending on the trip we have Oxford lifetime soft expandable throwovers or belstaff expandable throwovers.
Both the to the rear footrests and are pretty good for both space and waterproofness.
That said I always pack everything in carrier bags or the like just to make sure our stuff stays dry.

I bought some el cheapo throwovers.   (well, comparatively speaking). They sort of do the job but area  false economy IMHO.  I'd say to buy decent ones.

As good as hard panniers can be, they are also very hard to find for our bikes so that's something to consider.

Thanks for the response - ill check out the smaller oxfords.

I need them for a run this weekend for use on another bike but want to get something that will go on the gsx without hassle also.

Gsx has a rack and I have a bag for that for lighter gear.

Any further brand/mode recommendations for under seat would be appreciated; my gsx is a single seat and Id rather not have the straps running over the paint.
