Six pot issues

Today I received a set of Tokico 4 pots and have fitted them instead of my 6 pots. After having the 6 pots powder coated I have had several issues, I don't know if the powder coating process has caused the problems, I will be taking the caliper halves to a local machine shop next week to check them out.
I have had problems with the middle sealing O ring, and some sticking pistons, I am starting to think that as they were powder coated as separate halves, perhaps they are now distorted, perhaps they should have been coated as a complete caliper?... hopefully the machine shop will be able to skim each face to correct this issue, that still doesn't correct the sticking piston issue though...will report back next week...hopefully my nice looking blue calipers won't end up as door stops...

The powdercoating process shouldn't have distorted them but I thing they are put together as matched halves.
Maybe you have the wrong halves together.
Any corrosion in the piston bores could be made worse by the heating process so should be cleaned out very thoroughly as well as the bores themselves as that could be the cause of the sticking pistons

Things worth checking anyway as they look amazing.

oh and a standard one too

Did you take the pistons & seals out before they got coated? Considering the heat ruins bearings I'd expect it bugger up the seals & maybe stick them to the pistons.

You can't mix the halves up as there is only one way to fit them as there is only one transfer port, they were totally stripped and bare before the process.
Hopefully I can have the faces skimmed and then look more into the piston issue, I know someone who can check the bores and if need be make up some new pistons.
Saying that, I am happy with the performance of the 4 pots, so at least I'm still on the road  :onya:

Cheers guys.

T250..
Wait till your pads are bedded in on your 4 pots..
I wouldnt go back to my 6 pots if you paid me!
My 6 pots were NOT seized and all 6 pistons moved freely by thumb pressure..
But still the 4 pots on my bike are better than the originals.

The temps in they powdercoating process are nowhere near high enough to distort the calipers.
Typically they bake powdercoat at around 200 C.

Calipers are beyond economical repair  On the other hand I am well pleased with the way the 4 pots are working  :onya:

You've got two calipers though, so you might have half of each together.

Worth checking before binning them as then they could go on ebay.

I couldn't put them on evilbay as I know they are faulty and I wouldn't want to wish that on someone. I know what needs doing but I'm not going to throw any more money at them, just put it down to a bad experience...I had a bad feeling before I started, but at least the 4 pots are doing a great job  :onya:

Andre

What is the issue that makes the repair uneconomical? Confirmed that distortion through heat was the cause?

T250

When they coated the halves they also coated the faces where the calipers join, they then blasted off the coating where the transfer port is but this does not seal now, hence the problem. I was quoted today to have the faces skimmed so it would be true, but the cost isn't worth it sadly. In hindsight I should have sent them in as a complete caliper and this would have avoided this issue.

Hooli

Ahh now it makes sense. Idiots doing the coating then, they should be paying for replacements if they didn't mask it up correctly & were expected to do so.

Guess them powdercoaters are no mechanical engineers. Plenty of shite reported so far.

@T250

Hi Fella Ive refurbished dozens of set of the 6 pots over the years (used to do for a few forums) - if you want to post them up to me Ill see what I can do to put them right for you - I've got the facilities here to pressure check them once had a go at sorting - you cover the postage - no charge my end happy to have a look see for you

I suppose they are okay for wrought iron gates or something industrial...but more intricate parts cause a load of grief.
As some will know, just look at the trouble on the Triumph forums where T140 OIF's have been powder coated and then the motors are toast due to grit damage...
